Schoolhouse Children's Museum Improvement Project Public Works is preparing to preform some minor improvements for the Schoolhouse Children's Museum courtyard. The department wanted to include public art to assist with paint color choices and the possibility to add some public art elements to the improvements. Once we visited the site, discussed the brick paver cleaning, coquina slab repairs, palm tree grate replacements, trash can, benches, railings, trellis and trellis column painting we concluded that by placing some public art elements on or suspended from the metal trellis that flank the courtyard the improvements would greatly add to the SCM building and main public gathering space in the Civic /Cultural District of the City. The challenge is to locate an artist that could willing complete the task within an restricted budget while delivering a meaningful public art addition(s) that represents the SCM and its surroundings in durable long lasting materials for the completion timeframe of October 2012. 1 took the initiative to contact Debbie and Len Marucci to see if they had an interest in the project and could create durable metal artwork impressions for the proposed budget of $2,500.00. They said they wish to pursue this challenge. If the board approves Debbie and Len Marrucci to accomplish challenge they will present concepts to the board at the May 22 meeting for approval. This artist team has had many artworks displayed on the Avenue of the Arts and created the Seacrest Streetscape Public Art project. Debbie's resume follows. Dear Selection Committee, I am a painter and sculptor with a bachelor of fine arts degree and a teaching certificate from Youngstown University. I taught fine art in the Youngstown Public school System before moving to Florida in 1999. Most recently, my work consists of formed and fabricated steel and aluminum sculpture. My 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional works are cut out with a plasma torch. I texturize the surface with a variety of grinding disks. Next, the surface is painted in layers of transluccent colors or is powder coated. A durable and glossy clear coat epoxy finishes the process. The result is a shimmering, (when appropriate, colorful) sculpture that stimulates the mind and dazzles the eye. In an effort to celebrate the beauty and bring awareness to the fragility of the Florida environment, I am inspired to represent botanical and wildlife images in much my work. In 2009, The City of Boynton Beach purchased one of my free - standing sculptures - "Butterfly Dance ", for display in a community park. They also acquired "Botanical Bliss" on loan for the "Avenue of the Arts" project. Subsequently, I was commissioned by the City to create a three part narrative sculpture /fence structure which measures 20 feet per section. Thus, this entire project included sixty feet of imagery. Each section is placed on a corner of Seacrest Boulevard adjacent to Heritage Park, where my free standing sculpture, " Butterfly Dance" stands. The sections are divided into three categories: past, present and future. The center panel of each section is designed with an iconic image within a heart shape which symbolizes the "Heart of Boynton." (the theme for that area of the (ity) The project began with a series of charrettes to gather community input. A suggestion was made that I collaborate with a local up- and - coming artist, Jermaine Johnson. I worked as an atelier mentor with Jermaine on two panels that depict a time of struggle and segregation in the South and the transformation to current day. The City logo's, a sailfish, is featured in a heart shape in the center panel. Another set of panels depict and celebrate the distant past featuring; LeFlorida - the Atlantic ocean, Seminole Indians, beautiful flowers and ferns, cattails, a marsh rabbit and alligator. The final set of panels depict the "Future to Present ". The spirit of freedom is represented in the center panel with a dove within a heart. Raised hands of men, women and children symbolize Martin Luther King's "living the dream." Also depicted is a church steeple, the foundation of a community, musical dancing notes honoring the arts and butterflies for hope. And lastly, a rising sun - for a good day and a bright future for prosperity, a home representing family unity, and a tree of life, rooted in a strong foundation, blooming and nesting the blue bird of happiness. Other examples of my recent work include a series of 3 dimensional formed and fabricated stainless steel fish. These colorful and fanci- ful sculptures are designed for wall mounting and to be free - standing on a base. Recently, I won a best of show award at the Arti Gras Art Show in North Palm Beach for my 10' high, steel, spiral orb sculpture. A spin - nable 4" diameter sphere casts lacy graphic patterns on the ground that remind one of a kaleidoscope. Whether telling a story with my representational works or entertaining the viewer with my abstract pieces, I strive to cultivate learning, inform and encourage diversity, environmental sustainability and inspire the community in which I live. I look forward to sharing my skills and vision as an artist with the Charlotte County community in a successful collaboration. Sincerely, Deborah Marucci a t Resunne debbie marucci 408 Bailey Road Venice, Florida 34292 studio: 941- 445 -5962 email: debmar22 @msn.com Ms. Marucci is a versatile artist who is as talented with her sculptural works as with her paintings. In 2008, The City of Boynton Beach "Avenue of the Arts' year -long loan program awarded Ms. Marucci with two commissions titled "Butterfly Dance" and "Botanical Bliss." In 2009, the City purchased one of these "Butterfly Dance ", for permanent placement in Heritage Park. For continuity and with the communities influence, they also commissioned for the Seacrest Streetscape Beautification project, a series of 3 - 20' long sculptures that depict the City's past, present, and future, and celebrate their culture and diversity. In 2010, the City choose another piece "Flower Power" which is currently on display on the "Avenue ". Debbie takes pride in applying her experience as an artist, educator and story teller in this series. Installation is slated for February of 2011.
