A. "Paulo" Artists Reception & JellyFish Drive Project
Meeting Minutes
Arts Commission
Boynton Beach, FL May 22, 2012
Ms. Coles -Dobay shared that this basically started out as a science meets art project
and was part of the Earth Week exhibit that took place in City Hall. When Paulo began
talking about his artwork, he spoke about his organic jellyfish project that he put on the
metal pieces. His intent was to get sponsors of the artwork and put it on a bamboo raft
and bring it to the gulfstream letting it drift north into the gulfstream for someone to find
it. The message would be to keep your ocean clean and reduce trash because you
might find a treasure on the beach. This could tie in to the branding statement. The
Artists Reception raised funds to support the project. The "release" would take place on
July 7 at Oceanfront Park Beach. There would be other participants involved. Chair
Ready advised that anyone who made a donation would have their name engraved and
if enough funds were collected, a GPS unit would be put on the raft for tracking
purposes.
B. May 4 "Building a Better Boynton" Presentation
Ms. Coles -Dobay commented there was a presentation hosted by the CRA, the City and
the Chamber at the Woman's Club on the Boynton Beach Promise and Branding
Statement. All the Homeowner Associations, Presidents, Board members, community,
as well as businesses were invited. There were good speakers which included project
updates by the City and developers.
C. June 14, 6 -8 p.m. Sims Center Under 21 Artists Reception
Ms. Coles -Dobay suggested everyone mark the date on their calendars to view the
exhibit. This was a program that worked with area youth who were underprivileged or
needed structure. It reached out to established or well -known artists that come in and
do workshops with the students. This teaches the student how to express themselves
and improve their lives through art projects. Seven artists are showcasing their work
along with what they worked on with the students.
VI. Project Updates
A. Sibia Medical Office Building — Public Artist and Concept Approval
The two public artists, Leo Urban of Urban Associates, and Tracey Rosof- Peterson of
Earth Artists Clay Studio were present to describe the project in which they were
partnering. Mr. Urban explained that the Umbrella Sage, known for its medical
treatment properties, was photographed in full bloom and then the image was
manipulated on PhotoShop to represent a high contrast color blend graphic illustration.
Ms. Rosof- Peterson would then fabricate the image in the form of a low relief clay tile
mural. Low relief would mean no parts sticking out and no parts that could catch or
break off. Mr. Urban continued to describe the mura'Is dimensions, colors and location
on the building.

Motion
Vice Chair Slocombe moved to approve the public artist and concept. The motion was
seconded by Ms. Wolf and unanimously passed.
B. "Mangrove Park" renovations — Public Art and Concept Approval
Ms. Coles -Dobay advised work on the project was approved previously. This was for
approval of the concept. The artist wanted to build a sample of the "tiki person" so the
Board could see what he was describing. He used found objects such as sea glass,
rope, shells, rocks, plastic bottle caps among other things to build the art piece. Ms.
Coles -Dobay advised she was kept informed of the progress.
Motion
Vice Chair Slocombe moved to approve the concept. The motion was seconded by Ms.
Lorenz and unanimously approved.
C. SCM renovations — Public Art Concept Proposals (2)
Ms. Coles -Dobay advised at the last meeting there was an attempt to match an artist
with a public art concept. There were discussions about different artists who could
complete the project within the budget and timeframe, as well as other criteria. There
were two proposals for the Board to consider. One proposal was from Debbie Marucci
and her concept of hung mobiles for the Children's Schoolhouse Museum courtyard.
Another concept was presented by Rolando Barrero which involved pinwheels
suspended from the trellis.
There was a lengthy discussion on both concepts and the pros and cons of each one.
Neither concept appeared to appeal to any member. Some mentioned simply hanging
plants on the trellis as this seemed to be its purpose or possibly having a theme in place
should one of the artists be chosen. There was discussion on Rolando Barrero's
pinwheels and how it could correlate with the Kinetic Art Symposium and the branding
logo. The members were asked for consensus on either going back and starting over
for ideas or going with one of the artist's presentations. The members would like to see
Debbie Marucci return with more concepts with direction to develop something more
organic /topiary winding around the trellis.
D. Tennis Center Murals
Ms. Coles -Dobay advised the Tennis Center and Recreation and Parks wanted to make
improvements inside their locker rooms and wanted to find someone who would paint a
mural as a donation or for a very small amount. A couple of local, emerging artists

B. Program /Sponsor Updates
Ms. Coles -Dobay advised she still needed a hotel sponsor and asked for a volunteer to
accomplish it. The dates would be February 8 -10, 2012. The amount of rooms were
unknown at this time. The Palm Beach County Visitors Bureau would also be solicited
for assistance and although it would not have to be a Boynton Beach hotel, it would be
preferred.
C. Exhibit Committee
This was discussed with other topics
D. Vendor Committee
There was clarification that there would be no actual food vendors. There would,
however, be a discussion with the Children's Schoolhouse Museum to determine if they
wanted to collaborate with the downtown businesses and restaurants to do a tasting.
This could possibly entice visitors to eat at the restaurant. There was discussion on the
details as to charges, setups, etc. There was also discussion on the other types of
vendors that would be present.
Ms. Lorenz mentioned the possibility of transportation for people out of town or for
people that have to walk a distance and Ms. Coley -Dobay reminded everyone that there
was nothing in the budget for transportation.
The marketing plan was discussed and Ms. Bottorff reviewed what marketing strategies
were currently being used. Ms. Coles -Dobay discussed this in greater detail.
Ms. Coles -Dobay advised that on June 5, there would be a selection of artists and the
results would be discussed at the next meeting.
