Minutes 06-12-12 MINUTES OF THE SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 2012, AT 9:00 A.M., IN CITY HALL, CONFERENCE ROOM B, 100 E. Call to Order Vice Chair Altman called the meeting to order at 9:07 a.m. II. Roll Call Roll call was taken. A quorum was present. III. Acceptance of Minutes of May 8, 2012, regular meeting Motion Mr. Magazine moved to accept the minutes. Mr. Dauta seconded the motion that unanimously passed. Mr. Magazine introduced new member Robert Sweeney, representing ITS/GIS and Risk Management summer intern, Madison Franetic to the Committee. 1 Meeting Minutes Safety Committee Boynton Beach, Florida June 12, 2012 IV. Safety Committee Education & Training - tbd No video was viewed; however, Vice Chair Altman reminded the members to take the time to do a task right to begin with. Failure to do so causes injuries and wasted time doing the task over. Employees could be hurt taking shortcuts. V. Old Business A. Fire Drills No fire drills were held. Mr. Ezell explained the West Water Treatment Plan had a fire safety class last week. Mr. Ezell was requested to forward any available paperwork to Mr. Bobich. B. Proud to be a Safe Worker Awards None. C. Departmental Inspections & Safety Meetings The members were requested to submit their inspections electronically and send schedules of upcoming safety meetings so Mr. Bobich could attend them. It was noted Fire Rescue was holding a meeting on Thursday, June 14th at 8:30 a.m. at Station 5. Vice Chair Altman commented he came across a DVD from Palm Beach County pertaining to the risk of cancer for firefighters. He noted Metro Dade did a study and reported 28% of firefighters suffered from some type of cancer, including skin cancer. It was unknown what the figure was without the skin cancer. He noted firefighters are exposed to all types of burning materials, many of which are unknown at the time of the fire. Additionally, they are exposed to additional hazards when clearing a smoking fire. As a result, it was recommended firefighters wash their bunker gear to avoid transporting any hazardous substances. D. Incident Review Board Referrals None. E. Other Mr. Magazine reminded the members an email was previously sent about open flames being prohibited in certain areas. If any were found, the Safety Coordinators were authorized to immediately extinguish them. VI. New Business A. Departmental Safety Issues None. B. Other VII. Announcements A. Other Mr. Magazine advised he would be issuing information on heat injuries. Employees working outside were required to take precautions. Additionally, Vice Chair Altman, reminded all the Fourth of July was approaching and anyone using fireworks should use extreme caution. Every year individuals are injured and the best way to see fireworks was to attend a public display. July is also a hot month. Embers from fireworks could easily cause a fire. Mr. Sweeney informed the Committee that through the City's contract with SunGuard, Enterprise Training was available through HTE. Enterprise Training has different modules, one of which addressed Health and Safety. Some of these training sessions could be used for Continuing Education Units. Anyone can be set up to access the training, and the program was essentially an online learning center. Employees interested in the training should contact Barry Brandenburg. The training also was not tied to the workstation. It was agreed Mr. Sweeney would forward the information to Mr. Bobich for review. He could then recommend classes for various departments for discussion at safety meetings. VIII. Adjournment Motion There being no further business to discuss, Ms. Cherry moved to adjourn. Vice Chair Altman seconded the motion that unanimously passed.
