IV. Safety Committee Education & Training - tbd
No video was viewed; however, Vice Chair Altman reminded the members to take the
time to do a task right to begin with. Failure to do so causes injuries and wasted time
doing the task over. Employees could be hurt taking shortcuts.
V. Old Business
A. Fire Drills
No fire drills were held. Mr. Ezell explained the West Water Treatment Plan had a fire
safety class last week. Mr. Ezell was requested to forward any available paperwork to
Mr. Bobich.
B. Proud to be a Safe Worker Awards

C. Departmental Inspections & Safety Meetings

Fire Rescue was holding a meeting on Thursday, June 14th at 8:30 a.m. at Station 5.
Vice Chair Altman commented he came across a DVD from Palm Beach County
pertaining to the risk of cancer for firefighters. He noted Metro Dade did a study and
reported 28% of firefighters suffered from some type of cancer, including skin cancer. It
was unknown what the figure was without the skin cancer. He noted firefighters are
exposed to all types of burning materials, many of which are unknown at the time of the
fire. Additionally, they are exposed to additional hazards when clearing a smoking fire.
As a result, it was recommended firefighters wash their bunker gear to avoid
transporting any hazardous substances.

VII. Announcements
A. Other
Mr. Magazine advised he would be issuing information on heat injuries. Employees
working outside were required to take precautions. Additionally, Vice Chair Altman,
reminded all the Fourth of July was approaching and anyone using fireworks should use
extreme caution. Every year individuals are injured and the best way to see fireworks
was to attend a public display. July is also a hot month. Embers from fireworks could
easily cause a fire.
Mr. Sweeney informed the Committee that through the City's contract with SunGuard,
Enterprise Training was available through HTE. Enterprise Training has different
modules, one of which addressed Health and Safety. Some of these training sessions
could be used for Continuing Education Units. Anyone can be set up to access the
training, and the program was essentially an online learning center. Employees
interested in the training should contact Barry Brandenburg. The training also was not
tied to the workstation.
It was agreed Mr. Sweeney would forward the information to Mr. Bobich for review. He
could then recommend classes for various departments for discussion at safety
meetings.
VIII. Next Meeting Date
The next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at 9:00 am.
