Chair Moeller called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Self- introductions were made. Artist Dana Donaty was also present. Mr. Combes moved to approve the agenda. E Meeting Minutes Arts •, • B oynton • • 1 • niff - •• Debby Coles - Dobay, Public Art Administrator, explained the above was part of the Art Walk Program. The walks were walks the artists in the Arts District hosted on the fourth Thursday of each month. It starts from 7 to 11 p.m. • .• Al m The next walk would be held on Sunday, October 7, from 3 to 11 p.m. This walk was to celebrate the one -year anniversary of the Arts District's first event. Ms. Coles - Dobay also noted it was Artist "Ralfonso's" birthday. A "Howling around the District" event would be held on October 25, 2012, which was a Halloween costumed event that started at 7 p.m. (Ms. Wolf arrived at 6:41 p.m.) w ,.. • • • T } • • Bad Ragaz Hall Biergarten — New Mural concept presentation by Dana Donaty Dana Donaty, Public Artist, presented a computer image for the members to review and explained a painted panel would be installed and they would paint small areas of the mural from the panel out onto the building to expand it. The painting would be her own painting and the image she presented was just for the concept. The Biergarten was an upscale, urban establishment with a contemporary interior with a lot of white, stainless steel, high ceilings and giant light fixtures. Her painting would be musically influenced. It was unique and different from anything in the area and her concept was complimentary with the interior. The required budget was $3,700; however, the owner was spending up to $5,000. She noted it would exceed the ambience found at the Buddha Sky Bar in Delray Beach. Ms. Wolf moved to approve the concept. Mr. Combes seconded the motion that unanimously passed. A. Symposium "To Do" List REA Meeting Minutes Arts Commission B oynton • • 1 M ill • • • •• • r Ms. Coles -Dobay explained Wednesday and Thursday was the installation of nine different kinetic art pieces which City staff would assist with. Once the trucks arrived, volunteers would have to identify the pieces and receive them and Ms. Coles -Dobay had a list of how the artwork was packed and the order in which they were packed. The crews would unload it from the trucks and pile and sort all the artists' artwork together. Some pieces would be put into storage. Crews would deliver the pieces to the site. Some volunteers would install and others would assist the artists with the installation. Artists Rein Treifeldt and Paul Daniel would be picked up at the airport and should arrive at the City around 11:30 a.m. Ms. Coles -Dobay had box lunches for everyone between 12 noon and 1 p.m. at the City Library. When the artists arrive, the art could not be sitting around unmanned. Ms. Wolf commented she had to leave by 9:30 or 10 a.m. Rick Beau Lieu and his crew would be there until about 11 a.m. Ms. Coles -Dobay agreed to bring a camera to document how the work was packed and its condition. This would also be helpful when the art had to be repacked. A video club would video still time frame throughout the entire installation and others would move around and take images of artists installing their work and then interview the artists. It would be put on the website and then on the DVD. The Arts Radio Network would come in and do the walking tour and would interview all the artists. Weather permitting, the work would be done by 5:30 p.m. The artists would then go to the hotel, change and meet for dinner at 7 p.m. Dinner would be held at Ms. Wolf's home from 7 to 9 p.m. Ms. Coles -Dobay planned to select the indoor artwork at the next Arts Commission meeting. Ms. Lorenz advised she visited Art in Motion in Ft. Lauderdale. She commented there was artwork and ceramic pieces that moved at the event and she obtained the names of the artists. She explained Debby Bottorff attended with her. As a follow -up to an email Ms. Coles -Dobay received from Ms. Lorenz what from an artist named Roland. She forwarded the information to Rolando Barrero directly as he was on the committee that would handle the matter. She was advised he spoke with Roland and he informed him they were considering his work and probably would include one of his pieces. The vendor list had been split. Ms. Coles -Dobay requested she be sent a copy of it to try to help. Artist Barbara Lenz had also spoken to individuals; however, they were not kinetic artists and she was advised she needed to adhere to the artists on the list as it was targeted to kinetic artists. The Art Institute was excited about the event and Ms. Lorenz planned to follow -up with them 3 Arts • • Boynton There were several local materials vendors. As to sponsor booths, the following organizations committed to the following: ➢ The Community Redevelopment Agency would have a booth ➢ The Kinetic Art Organization and International Sculpture Center would have a booth. The International Sculpture Center would either be at the booth where Show Book sales would occur. ➢ The City of Boynton Beach would have a booth manned by Carisse LeJeune, Assistant to the Interim City Manager ➢ The Arts District booth was where Rolando Barerra would act as broker and sell work from other artists that could not attend. Discussion turned to the sponsor letter. Mr. Combes had spoken to individuals at Merrill Lynch and they might be interested in a sponsorship. The letters were customized to Exhibits, Presentations, Workshop and sponsor levels depending on what the entity was interested in. The traditional sponsorship had different levels such as $75,000, $50,000 and $30,000. If one was interested in the $5,000 level, it would be used on the Youth Workshop and the Presentation components. They had the one letter which could give an introduction, but if an entity was interested in certain areas, it could be customized. The generic letter was on the website. ➢ The Palm Beach County Cultural County had not yet committed to a booth. ➢ Wind Capital wanted a booth ➢ Digital Arts Media College wanted a booth ➢ Graphics Plus - no confirmation on a booth has been received ➢ Citrus Creative Group — no confirmation on a booth has been received ➢ Arts Radio Network would do the Art of Walking Tour and may have a booth ➢ Boca Bearings had a booth ➢ St. Mark Church may have a booth ➢ S. Florida Science Museum indicated their support but had not committed ➢ Galaxy Elementary would be present ➢ The Chamber of Commerce f- • . Committee Mr. Combes was unaware whether Ms. Richman was still involved in the project. He reported he was developing a better prototype than the one presented at the last meeting and was investigating different materials. He was looking for colored vinyl material which may not need any decorating. He thought it would be translucent and the sunlight permeating through the different colors would make the finished pinwheel display attractive. Discussion turned to foam rubber. He had been investigating different materials and would be traveling to Ft. Lauderdale because not many people handle plastic. It was hoped he would find a supplier there. A suggestion was also made to CI Arts Commission B oynton pte m be 1 check the Blick Art Supply website. Ms. Wolf's daughter Jordan would help teach a class. Cellophane sheets were also suggested. Ms. Coles -Dobay explained there were a few more speakers. Bill Henry would discuss kinetic art with abstract pieces. He had a maquette that was eight -feet tall and others that were taller that had lighting and moved to available light which was a different aspect of kinetic art. Another piece had solar panels entwined into them that would collect energy for the grid. Ms. Coles -Dobay was trying to schedule him; however, he also wanted to speak on expanding creativity at the Sunday, February 10th session between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. Twenty thousand more "Save the Date" cards were printed to promote the Symposium. The Arts Commission already distributed 5,000 cards. Five hundred cards were distributed to the International Sculpture Center. In early October, they would have a conference in Chicago. They are also going to be at the ART Basel Media Booth, which will be held at the beginning of early December. Fifteen thousand will be distributed with the October issue as an insert. The publication covers South Palm Beach, Hypoluxo Island, Manalapan, Ocean Ridge, Briny Breezes, Gulfstream, coastal regions of Delray Beach, Boynton Beach and Boca Raton. They have great articles and they would do an article in the Arts newspaper supplement in January. The Post and Sun - Sentinel will be present at the kinetic art installation and they would take pictures of the artists. Ms. Tito would be attending a Florida Art Educators event in Tampa. Her college will have a booth and she would distribute the cards and flyers. The conference would be held in November. The Palm Beach County Cultural Council and Art and Culture Magazine would do a story on the event for the fall /winter issue. Ms. Coles -Dobay requested assistance to locate an individual to write the introduction for the show book. Discussion followed the Kinetic King would like to have his expenses covered for this event as he did not have money just to come down. When they discussed the outdoor exhibit, the Outdoor Committee decided he was not the right fit for the exhibit. He could be considered for the indoor exhibit at the next meeting. He was asking again for expenses and the Committee could address it next month. • Ms. Coles -Dobay and Ms. Tito will meet October 10, 2012, to review this item. Meeting Minutes Bo ynton Arts Commission Ms. Coles -Dobay commented she spoke with Chair Ready who indicated she had nothing to report on the Opening Reception. She noted Winn Dixie was interested in helping to sponsor the event. Discussion followed about whether the neighborhood restaurants would hold a tasting. Ms. Coles -Dobay had presented the symposium to the Special Event Ad Hoc Advisory Committee. They are holding a Pepper Festival and were developing another event. The Chamber of Commerce may coordinate with what the Community Redevelopment Agency does on regularly scheduled concert nights in the fall, and tap into the City. She presented what the Arts Commission was doing. She also made a presentation to the Chamber of Commerce and no one was interested in taking this on as it involved a great deal of work, although it was a great idea. Mr. Combes suggested to the local restaurants that they offer a discount. There was discussion there would be a listing of businesses in the Community Redevelopment Agency District contained in the program. They were covering a lot. She had suggested to the Community Redevelopment Agency that they promote the businesses in the downtown and contact the downtown restaurants and have specials, discounts or coupons at the Community Redevelopment Agency booth. She also suggested the Chamber of Commerce do the same thing. Ms. Coles -Dobay was trying to list them on the website and in the playbook. None. None NOT,"- X. Future Business None.
