Library Advisory Board Minutes
July 25, 2012
The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:04 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor All board
members were present except for Laurie Sulzer. The minutes of the June 27, 2012 meeting were approved as
distributed.
Correspondence: A letter thanking the library and expressing appreciation of the summer reading program
was received. Mr. Moran expressed admiration for the efforts of children's librarian Ms Fishman and the
entire Boynton Beach Library team.
Chair's Report: Chair Jeannie Taylor distributed a press release from the Carnegie Corporation announcing
the first recipients of the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction. Anne Enright's
novel The Forgotten Waltz received the fiction medal and Robert K. Massie's book Catherine the Great:
Portrait of a Woman received the nonfiction prize. Library Director, Craig Clark mentioned that the
Catherine the Great title was available as part of the Overdrive e -Book collection.
Unfinished Business:
Craig distributed the circulation statistics for the OverDrive eBooks system. Boynton has the largest
circulation of the participating libraries and enrolled 68 new e- reader patrons. There are now 883 titles
available.
The Unique Management Collection Services report through the end of June 2012 was distributed to the
board. The City has received $5,836.95 in returned materials and cash since the program began. Our cost
for the service to date is $2044.00.
The Summer Reading Program is underway with 828 children signed up. Already 107 children have
completed the reading goals and collected their prizes. The program ends August 4.
Craig also discussed the Library Budget with the board. He reported that he will lose a F/T Library Aide and
P/T Shelver but gain a much needed F/T Teen Services Librarian The book and materials budget is similar
to last year's budget.
New Business — The Adopt a Magazine program was introduced at the City Commission Budget meeting A
new list of magazines available to adopt was distributed Craig announced that a local doctor is sponsoring
twelve magazine titles for two years.
Library Director's Report Craig distributed the monthly report for June 2012 and noted that computer
usage statistics reflect fewer uses due to a change that allows each user to stay on for a longer time. He also
discussed the change which allows people with projects to use the lab computers so the computer doesn't log
them off in mid - project. He distributed recent articles and attributed increased attendance at the Job Seeker
programs to the recent publicity. He mentioned that the Palm Beach Post formerly supported the Job - Seeker
program but now the library pays for it. Assistant Director Anne Watts called in and reported that we may
get additional AmeriCorps volunteers next year. She stated that our Americorps program is the envy of all
the local Americorps programs.
The next library board meeting is September 26, 2012 at 4:00 p m. The meeting was adjourned at 5.10 p.m
