IV. Safety Committee Education & Training — tbd
Ms. Cherry explained at a prior meeting, she and Chair Bobich were talking about the
importance of awareness in everyday living, and she relayed a story that he requested
she share with the Committee.
Ms. Cherry recalled she was sitting on her balcony and began to hear a child whining
and crying, but ignored it. The whining was from across the parking lot, but she could
not identify the location. She tried to listen to what the child was saying, but then it
stopped and then it started again. This continued and she finally noticed a small child
come out onto the balcony across the parking lot on a third floor apartment.
She thought something about the situation was odd. She knew there was usually an
Officer on patrol in the apartment complex. She found the Officer and related what she
had been hearing. Additionally, another renter approached the Officer and confirmed
what was occurring.
The Officer went to the location and after a few moments, determined something was
wrong. The Fire Department was called and the door knocked down. It turned out there
were two young children, both under the age of five, in the unit. Their mother had
diabetes and was unconscious.
Ms. Cherry explained if she or the neighbor did not take the time to pay attention to the
child, the mother would have remained unconscious throughout the night and the
mother could well have died. Ms. Cherry noted the Fire Department was there for hours.
Mr. Bobich reminded the members it was important to keep one's eyes and ears open,
and to be aware. Sometimes people have to be the quarterback. When situations arise,
you might be the one to handle it.
Mr. Bobich had also mentioned he would send an email listing the PowerPoint
presentations on the Shared Drive which gave a basic review of various safety issues.
The Safety and Inspection forms, and Safety Awards and Safety Counseling forms were
there. The Safety Footwear Acknowledgement form, IRB forms, and Hurricane Safety
and Evacuation procedures were there. There were also Fire Extinguisher procedures
giving step -by -step directions, as well as First Aid presentations on the Shared Drive.
All things "Safety" could be found there.
V. Old Business
A. Fire Drills
