She noted Center members were inquiring when bus trips would commence. Ms. Molina 2 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, FL February 4, 2013 explained bus trips were difficult because the bus had to be back by 1 p.m. The best way to have a trip would be to rent a bus, which would be expensive. The existing bus needs tires. Senior Center employee, Ann Forester, is retiring in May and there would be a full -time replacement. A party was planned for Ms. Forester, most likely on a Thursday, as the City is closed on Fridays. Ms. Molina received correspondence from the National Council on Aging advising they will cut funding across the board that would affect the Center's food and transportation budget. She noted the cuts were already implemented before the letter was received. As to the food program, Ms. Molina was trying to negotiate a better price with the Mae Volen Center because they want $6 per meal whereas it used to be $3. Ten individuals were already on the waiting list. Further discussion ensued that the Palm Beach County Mid - County Senior Center provided free lunch and dinner to all who live in the County. It was thought if Mid - County provided free meals, then the Center should provide free meals. It was pointed out that if there are lunch leftovers, they serve them for dinner. The food has to be eaten at the Center; however, the service stopped just north of Lantana Road. Ms. Molina commented the County has a different budget VII. New Business Ms. Molina explained they had line dancers for the Thursday Jazz Band. She inquired if the Board wanted another day of dancing with more DJ type music, but on a different day. A volunteer was available to DJ the event on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Brief discussion followed additional dances should not be scheduled to conflict with the dances at the Civic Center. She explained they could get a disco ball and paintings to make the room more like a dance hall and the DJ would provide younger, senior -type music. Ms. Molina was also contemplating hosting a local restaurant expo to showcase local dishes. Discussion followed when an event was held at the Senior Center, it is packed and it may be better to hold this event at the Civic Center as it is bigger. The Center was very busy in July with free haircuts and karaoke competitions, and attendees enjoyed free appetizers. The senior activities at the Civic Center catered to different ages. Ms. Spinelli spoke about the Dakim Brain Fitness computer program. She became familiar with the program while visiting a senior center with her family in New York. It is a progressive program designed to monitor and preserve brain function. The senior center in New York obtained the program through a grant from the Unitarian Church and Ms. Spinelli suggested if it was possible to obtain this program to do so. Users participate in the program for 20 minutes a day to keep the brain active. It was 3 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, FL February 4 2 013 developed by two doctors who watched their father mentally decline. The Center users love the program as it is comprised of skits, games and answering questions. The cost is $249, and it can be uploaded on a home computer. The only equipment needed aside from the computer was a headphone. She commented hospitals were providing this for their patients as were dementia service providers, and the program was well received. Ms. Spinelli provided the information to Ms. Molina. Chair Lynch agreed to contact Board Alternate Stuart Preston as he comes to every meeting. It was noted Mr. Preston was present with his Service Representative to provide assistance to veterans for the Center's Veterans Day event. He and the Service Representative were very informative and several individuals learned they were eligible to receive a benefit or service they did not know about. VIII. Adjournment Motion There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 3:47 p.m. Oat(tums- OL4. Catherine Cherry Recording Secretary 021993 4
