y Advisory Board Minutes
February 23, 2013
The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board
members were present. Assistant Library Director, Ann Watts stood in for vacationing Library Director, Craig
Clark. The minutes of the January 23, 2013 meeting were approved as distributed. The minutes of December
5, 2012 meeting will be available at the March meeting.
Correspondence: The board received an email from Craig, on vacation in New Zealand.
Chair's Report: Jeannie discussed the role of the Library Board and described how important it is to translate
that into voting for candidates who support the library. She also discussed specific candidates and their past
contributions and support for the library.
- Ann reported that several smaller libraries in the Overdrive eBooks System didn't spend their acquisition
monies and directed it to our library to spend on the collection. The Boynton Library patron usage is the
majority of the total usage of all 13 participating libraries so we are removing "Boynton Only" restrictions on
our Overdrive eBooks collection. Staff is also opting to order the Mango Language Learning system which will
be downloadable to CD and available for patrons to keep (i.e. don't have to return.)
- The Unique Management Collection Services report was distributed to the board. The collection service
results remain about the same implying a better initial collection effort by our staff.
- The Freegal Music Download program allows patrons to download 3 songs per week and keep the songs. The
app is downloaded from iTunes and Library card number entered to identify our patrons. About 3 million tunes
are available.
-Ann also distributed the Adult Reading Club completion gifts to the board members who participated in the
club. About 200 patrons signed up for the program. She also mentioned that the kids Summer Reading
Program would be offering teens Mp3 players, funded by the Friends. Additionally the summer program will
offer the teens computer classes and job search classes taught by FAU computer club members and AmeriCorps
volunteers.
- Ann commented on the "awesome" Friends of the Library Author Luncheon held recently. They raised money
used to fund programming in the library. Jeannie commented that she had a great time and the food was good
and she won some prizes.
New Business: Susan, the new Library Archivist, was introduced to the board and described her background
and previous positions at Flagler Museum and as a Broward CountyLibrarian.
Library Director's Report: Anne distributed the monthly report for December 2012 and January 2013 and
noted that declines in some patron numbers are mostly due to patrons who stayed up north due damages from
Hurricane Sandy. A circulation switch to eBooks is also being noted as well as an increase in personal
computers using the library's WiFi, probably attributable to the economy. Ann also discussed the AmeriCorps
volunteers and their excellent results. Donations are being sought to help fund an additional volunteer.
The March Calendar was distributed. A discussion about the need for FaceBook classes and the lack of staff to
conduct them was held. The conclusion is that the library must be better funded and must regain some lost
positions in order to continue to offer programming that the community needs.
The next Library Board meeting is March 27, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
