The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board
members were present. Approval of the minutes of the April 24, 2013 meeting was tabled.
Correspondence: There was no correspondence.
Chair's Report: Jeannie attended the Palm Beach County Library Association annual event Celebrating
Libraries 2013. She reported that the panel discussion about the future of libraries was particularly interesting.
The importance of community partnerships and the need for improved grant writing was highlighted. Panel
member Jeff Clemens, State Senator, District 27, spoke on the importance of advocacy for libraries. Jeannie also
announced details of the upcoming PBCLA annual meeting on June 6 at the Palm Beach Zoo. All board
members were invited to attend.
-The Freegal Music Download program is becoming more popular each month. In April 2013, there were 400
songs downloaded in a variety of genres, with Pop, Rock, Jazz and Country being the top categories.
- Craig distributed the OverDrive e-books report for April. The report shows that 81 of Boynton's Overdrive
patrons checked out 340 items and there were 21 new users signed up.
- The Unique Management collection Services report was also distributed to the board. The collection service
results are up to 44.60 %. We have recovered over $3800 and close to $8400 in materials have been returned
since the inception of the program.
- A Staffing Update was given by Craig: Christine Benfeldt was promoted to Library Aide and is currently
staffing the Front Desk. Craig is currently interviewing and hopes to fill the three P/T positions open currently.
Some of the applications are from former teen volunteers.
New Business: The 2013/2014 Adopt -A- Magazine program will be presented at the Budget Hearing. Last year
the library received about $1,000 in private donations for the magazine budget. Some magazines were
sponsored for two years by area businesses. There was a lot of interest in the program. Craig also reported that
re- opening the library on Fridays was a topic of discussion at the last commission meeting. The topic was tabled
until next year. The additional cost of Friday opening is about $137,000.
Library Director's Report: Craig distributed the monthly report for April and noted that declines in some
patron numbers are due to the West Boynton and Lantana County Library branches being opened out west of
town. He also discussed the AmeriCorps volunteers and their excellent results in the Homework Help and
Literacy Programs. Craig also reported that 46 computers were replaced using State Aid money. The computers
were four years old and were updated as part of the technology planned upgrade program.
New Archivist Susan Swiatosz was featured in a newspaper article which Craig distributed.
The next library board meeting is June 26, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
