Sirota Submission for Public Art Examplars Patrick's work is currently on display at the Ringling Museum's Sarasota Museum of Art. I first saw this stuff in front of an iconic building in Sarasota (Their old High School) which has always been a huge, big, red brick building. I've been seeing this building for the last 30 years, 8 times a year every time I visit Sarasota. The building was recently bought by the Ringling Museum and is undergoing renovation. Here is a link to their website with some info about the "Stickwork" exhibit that is currently on display there. They also had a recent children's photography contest for all age groups of this display. I am in LOVE with these pieces. Possibly some of the most creative, unique, AND SUSTAINABLE form of Art I've seen. Patrick Dougherty Bio video SMOA: Patrick Dougherty at SMOA http:/ /vimeo.com /51229467 Born in Oklahoma in 1945, Dougherty was raised in North Carolina. He earned a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina in 1967 and an M.A. in Hospital and Health Administration from the University of Iowa in 1969. Later, he returned to the University of North Carolina to study art history and sculpture. Combining his carpentry skills with his love of nature, Patrick began to learn more about primitive techniques of building and to experiment with tree saplings as construction material. In 1982 his first work, Maple Body Wrap, was included in the North Carolina Biennial Artists' Exhibition, sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of Art. In the following year, he had his first one - person show entitled, Waitin' It Out in Maple at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston - Salem, North Carolina. His work quickly evolved from single pieces on conventional pedestals to monumental scale environmental works, which required saplings by the truckloads. Over the last thirty years, he has built over 230 of these works, and become internationally acclaimed. His sculpture has been seen worldwide -- -from Scotland to Japan to Brussels, and all over the United States. He has received numerous awards, including the 2011 Factor Prize for Southern Art, North Carolina Artist Fellowship Award, Pollock- Krasner Foundation Grant, Henry Moore Foundation Fellowship, Japan -US Creative Arts Fellowship, and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Princeton Architectural Press published a major book about Patrick and his work in 2009. This monograph, Stickwork, has received excellent reviews and is available at www.stickwork.net. (More pictures at the above website and more pictures of the art in my referenced setting at): SMOA: Patrick Dougherty at SMOA I Rob n Lorenz Downtown Seattle I like the size and color of this sculpture. I can see this idea working well as a fountain. I also like the see through quality of the petal because it looks like one of my sculptures (lol). I i yy w yy Soroptimist Park, Rowes Bay Austrailia I like the sculpture on the left because it is colorful, durable, tropical, and something kids can climb on. I included the two photos to the right as a further example of this technique. Artist Konstantin Dimopoulos paints trees with a `biologically safe pigmented water' to make a statement about how important trees are to our survival. The color will naturally degrade over a period of months. Seattle's trees "turned color" on April 2nd, 2012, and will likely remain that way through the summer. Not a public art installation, but an interesting concept.... money trees. The money trees may be utilized by people plagued by an illness. One legend says that by hammering a coin into a tree, the tree can take away the sickness. Anyone who dared to remove one of the coins would himself be stricken with illness. Could all of these coins really have been placed by individuals trying to rid themselves of diseases? Whether or not these findings are accurate, the money trees are a fascinating tradition that appears to be confined only to Great Britain. y Why have plain sidewalks? Artist Janette Ireland, MOSAIC -ART, Fern Cottage, Chapel Lane, Ellel, Lancaster, LA2 OPW, United Kingdom eA _ t #. 4 . t- n I ' wT I I just threw the following images in because they are fun and I like them. Bill Orlove Artwork title: Cloud Gate (commonly known as "the bean ") Artist name: Anish Kapoor Where sited (city building): In Millennium Park in Chicago Purpose meaning of artwork: Inspired by liquid mercury, the art reflects Chicago's skyline and the clouds above. The 12- foot -high arch provides a "gate" to the concave chamber beneath the sculpture, inviting visitors to touch its mirror -like surface and see their image reflected back from a variety of perspectives. artwork materials: Highly polished stainless steel plates artwork size: The sculpture, among the largest of its kind in the world, measures 66 feet long by 33 feet high Why you thought is was an example to share with the board: It exemplifies what public art should be - something that surprises you, draws you in and provides you with an opportunity to interact with it. The art, like other public art in Chicago, enhances the city's identity. City of Chicago :: Millennium Park Media Image Gallery Deborah Bottorff Mosaicultures Internationales Montreal 2013 Montreal Botanical Gardens, Quebec Ran through September 29, 2013 A horticulture competition featuring over 40 living plant sculptures is exhibiting at the montreal botanical gardens in canada. 'mosaicultures Internationales montreal 2013 displays two and three dimensional constructions, cultivated by 200 international horticultural artists originating from more than 20 countries, making it the largest eco- responsible event to come to quebec. mosaiculture is a multifaceted discipline, drawing on a range of craftsmanship and knowledge — sculpture for the framework, painting for chroma, and ecology, for the understanding of the maintenance of the floral medium. this year's event challenged the artists around the theme 'land of hope' as it reflects their own culture, drawing influences from icons of peace and promise for a environmentally sound world. collectively, over three million colorful flowers and plants were used in the environmental designs, creating a colossal body of living vibrant art. Once every three years, there is an international competition in horticultural sculpture, called " mosaiculture," in a major city in the world. This year it is Montreal. This is not topiary but rather creating sculptures out of living plants. The greatest horticulturalists in the world, from 20 different countries, submitted plans a year in advance. Steel armatures were then created to support the works (some 40 feet high); they were then wrapped in steel mesh and filled with dirt and moss and watering hoses. Then they ordered 3 million plants of different shades of green and brown and tan, and these were grown in greenhouses all over Quebec. In late May, these horticulturalists came to Montreal and planted all of their plants in the forms at the Montreal Botanic Gardens, and they have been standing for three months now. There were 50 major sculptures along a path two miles long. They were incredible. M Virtual Garden: Mo5aicUlWre xhib ition z. Electroland is a cutting edge design team (Damon Seely and Cameron McNall) that incorporates LED lights, sounds, and interactivity into most of their projects. Electroland - Cameron McNall and Damon Seeley - EnterActive I'm choosing to share this project with the board because I like how different it is from the projects we see. I like that it incorporates New Media and interactivity. It's also kinetic and always changing.
