PUBLIC ART EXAMPLES, November 26, 2013
Paul R. Sirota Submission for Public Art Examplars
Patrick's work is currently o display at the Ringling Museum's Sarasota Museum of Art. I first saw
this stuff in front of an iconic building in Sarasota (Their old High School) which has always been a
huge, big, red brick building. I've been seeing this building for the last 30 years, 8 times a year every
time I visit Sarasota. The building was recently bought by the Ringling Museum and is undergoing
renovation. Here is a link to their website with some info about the "Stickwork" exhibit that is currently
on display there. They also had a recent children's photography contest for all age groups of this
display. I am in LOVE with these pieces. Possibly some of the most creative, unique, AND
SUSTAINABLE form of Art I've seen.
Patrick Dougherty Bio video SMOA: Patrick Dougherty at SMOA http: / /vimeo.com /51229467
Born in Oklahoma in 1945, Dougherty was raised in North Carolina. He earned a B.A. in. English from
the University of North Carolina in 1967 and an M.A. in Hospital and Health Administration from the
University of Iowa in 1969. Later, he returned to the University of North Carolina to study art history
and sculpture.
Combining his carpentry skills with his love of nature, Patrick began to learn more about primitive
techniques of building and to experiment with tree saplings as construction material. In 1982 his first
work, Maple Body Wrap, was included in the North Carolina Biennial Artists' Exhibition, sponsored by
the North Carolina Museum of Art. In the following year, he had his first one - person show entitled,
Waitin' It Out in Maple at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston - Salem, North
Carolina.
His work quickly evolved from single pieces on conventional pedestals to monumental scale
environmental works, which required saplings by the truckloads. Over the last thirty years, he has
built over 230 of these works, and become internationally acclaimed. His sculpture has been seen
worldwide -- -from Scotland to Japan to Brussels, and all over the United States.
He has received numerous awards, including the 2011 Factor Prize for Southern Art, North Carolina
Artist Fellowship Award, Pollock- Krasner Foundation Grant, Henry Moore Foundation Fellowship,
Japan -US Creative Arts Fellowship, and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Princeton
Architectural Press published a major book about Patrick and his work in 2009. This monograph,
Stickwork, has received excellent reviews and is available at www..stickwork.net.

Not a public art installation, but an interesting concept....mon trees. The mone trees may be
utilized by p eople plagued by an illness. One legend says that by hammering a coin into a tree, the
tree can take away the sickness. Anyone who dared to remove one of the coins would himself be
stricken with illness. Could all of these coins really have been placed by individuals trying to rid
them s e lves of diseases? Whether or not these findings are accurate, the money trees are a
fascinating tradition that appears to be confined only to Great Britain.

Mosaicultures Internationales Montreal 2013
Montreal Botanical Gardens, Quebec
Ran through September 29, 2013
A horticulture competition featuring over 40 living plant sculptures is exhibiting at the montreal
botanical gardens in canada. ` mosaicultures internationales montreal 2013 displays two and three
dimensional constructions, cultivated by 200 international horticultural artists originating from more
than 20 countries, making it the largest eco- responsible event to come to quebec. mosaiculture is a
multifaceted discipline, drawing on a range of craftsmanship and knowledge — sculpture for the
framework, painting for chroma, and ecology, for the understanding of the maintenance of the floral
medium. this year's event challenged the artists around the theme `land of hope' as it reflects their
own culture, drawing influences from icons of peace and promise for a environmentally sound world.
collectively, over three million colorful flowers and plants were used in the environmental designs,
creating a colossal body of living vibrant art.
Once every three years, there is an international competition in horticultural sculpture, called
"mosaiculture," in a major city in the world. This year it is Montreal. This is not topiary but rather
creating sculptures out of living plants. The greatest horticulturalists in the world, from 20 different
countries, submitted plans a year in advance. Steel armatures were then created to support the
works (some 40 feet high); they were then wrapped in steel mesh and filled with dirt and moss and
watering hoses. Then they ordered 3 million plants of different shades of green and brown and tan,
•
•
•
and these were grown in greenhouses all over Quebec. In late May, these horticulturalists came to
Montreal and planted all of their plants in the forms at the Montreal Botanic Gardens, and they have
been standing for three months now. There were 50 major sculptures along a path two miles long.
They were incredible.

It is in Los Angeles California and was completed in 2006
It is a luminous field of interactive LED Lights embedded on the ground and responds
