INTERNATIONAL KINETIC ART SYMPOSIUM AND EXHIBIT PLANNING a) Website Update 2015 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium — Boynton Beach, FL. There have been a few updates concerning the 2015 event. Chair Bottorff asked members to view the website for any concerns, ideas or errors they may notice and pass them on to Ms. Coles - Dobay. Ms. Coles -Dobay asked to pay particular attention to the committee area. b) Budget A list of 2013s expenditures was provided to the members as well as a preliminary budget for 2014. Ms. Coles -Dobay commented almost all of last year's expenses were funded except for $7,000. Last year's expenses totaled $80,000. So far for this year there will be an added expense of $11,000 for the exhibit tent and security which there is no quote for yet. The City has committed $15,000 for 2014 -15 and for the following year another $15,000. Programs from Avenue of the Arts will also contribute. The total commitment to date is approximately $42,000. Sponsors will be needed to help offset the $40,000 still needed to match last year's budget. Mr. Sirota asked about the possibility of selling books and DVDs again this year. Ms. Coles -Dobay responded it was not clear whether this was going to be used again or find an alternative that is more cost effective There are still books left over from last year being used to attract future sponsors The City was also not prepared to advertise them for sale on their website which precluded further sales There were many marketing suggestions made by the members: • Ms Lorenz suggested a call to artists to design posters, • Mr. Slocombe suggested a disk in lieu of a book; • Mr. Orlove stated he would buy a poster signed by the artists instead of a book or a DVD. This would be more cost effective and people would have a remembrance of the event as well. • Ms. Lorenz suggested the artists sign the posters the first night of the event and then charge more for the poster; • Another suggestion made was to have blank posters on hand for those who wanted to have the excitement of finding the artist for his /her signature; • Ms. Coles -Dobay suggested having information available as to where and what time an artist would be available to sign posters • Ms. Tito suggested including the cost of tubes for the posters to make carrying them easier. 3 MEETING MINUTES ARTS COMMISSION BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA NOVEMBER 26, 2013 Chair Bottorff agreed these were all good suggestions and a lot to think about prior to the next meeting. c) Sponsors — Board members provide three each Chair Bottorff asked the members to think of at least three appropriate sponsors and forward Ms. Coles -Dobay the information as soon as possible. Please be sure to give an explanation as to why a particular sponsor would be appropriate. Ms. Coles -Dobay will re -send the form to all members to list potential sponsors. After some discussion it was decided the sponsor forms must be received by Ms. Coles -Dobay by December 12th Ms Coles -Dobay also said it was very important to get commitment letters from potential sponsors prior to actually receiving the money Ms. Lorenz made a comment there were not enough pictures on the website. Ms. Coles -Dobay suggested she go onto the website and make notations of where she felt there should be more pictures. d) To Do List — Review of Updates • Chair Bottorff reported there were no updates in regards to the marketing; • Ms. Tito had nothing new to report on the Sponsorship Committee at this time and will wait until the next meeting for the suggestions of sponsors from the other members; • Ms. Lorenz is working with the Visionary School of Art in Stuart. The school is interested in participating with an artist that will make paintings that have movable elements like kinetic art, Ms. Lorenz also talked about possible acrobats and wondered if there was going to be any entertainment. Ms. Coles -Dobay replied there is no one overseeing entertainment for this year Any type of entertainment would have to be discussed since there would be a cost involved Chair Bottorff asked the members to think about some entertainment ideas for discussion at the next meeting. Mr. Orlove stated piped in background music may be an idea instead of entertainment because it takes the focus away from the art exhibits Ms. Lorenz asked about getting restaurants that have doubled and tripled their customer base as sponsors. Banana Boat, Two Georges, Prime Catch, Hurricane Alley, and the Backyard have all done well in the past year. Chair Bottorff thought this was a good idea and suggested contacting those restaurants to ask if they would be interested in being sponsors. Members will send the names of potential sponsors to Ms Coles- Dobay. 4 MEETING MINUTES ARTS COMMISSION BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA NOVEMBER 26, 2013 Vice Chair Moeller addressed the members to say it has been a pleasure serving on the Board for the last seven years. She appreciated working with the other members to help beautify the City. Vice Chair Moeller was on the presenters committee and someone will have to volunteer to fill the opening. Mr. Orlove volunteered to take over the responsibility. Continuing discussing the to -do -list; • Ms. Lorenz stated she put a call out to artists and directed them to the website. However, there has been no response and she will continue to post information. • Mr. Sirota reported he contacted Ms. Mary Cavaioli, Head of the Arts Curriculum Department for the District Ms. Cavaiolii is interested in involving the District in some capacity, but budget is a large concern. Mr. Orlove asked if the Dreyfoos School of the Arts was involved and Mr Sirota reiterated Ms. Mary Cavaioli oversees the Performing Arts for the District and that would be something to discuss with her. Mr. Orlove added this would be a good avenue for the students to volunteer or to display their own art. He suggested teachers at Dreyfoos or Bash Bak School of the Arts could be contacted instead of District wide. However, Mr. Sirota replied it would be better to go through Ms Cavaioli first. Ms. Coles -Dobay reminded the members The Central Charter School from Ft. Lauderdale is already involved and will be creating a solar tree project for their curriculum The project will begin in January 2014 and will be the actual size of a tree. Information about The Children's Schoolhouse Museum workshops must be sent out to the students in the District as well as information about the symposium. Ms. Lorenz stated teachers are always looking for a different lesson plan and if a common core lesson plan could be put together along with a kinetic art component perhaps this idea could be presented to Ms. Cavaioli. Ms. Lorenz also commented The Palm Beach County Art Teachers Association put on a student show every year that is well attended This would be a great venue to get the word out about the symposium. To review, Chair Bottorff stated there will be a few programs that will be focused on; 1 The Children's Schoolhouse Museum, 2. Rein Treifeldt's program; 3 Presentations of the STEAM (Science, Technology. Engineering and Mathematics) program at Galaxy Elementary School • Mr. Slocombe did not have anything to report on outdoor or indoor exhibits. 5 MEETING MINUTES ARTS COMMISSION BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA NOVEMBER 26, 2013 Ms Coles -Dobay spoke about the 2015 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium and distributed a sample flyer of the dates for the coming 2014 -2015 year On January 29, 2014, 1:30 -2:30 p.m., in the City Library, there will be a "Kinetic Art- Year in Review" presentation that will be a very important night to invite potential sponsors so they can get an idea of what has happened in the past year It will also pre- promote the Kinetics Symposium for this year. The sample flyer will be printed and distributed at Art Palm Beach at the Art Synergy booth to promote the January 29 presentation as well as the Art al'Fresco information. Chair Bottorff interjected Ms. Coles -Dobay and Ralfonso have been in communication with Chinese artists, professors, companies and delegates to see how they might want to participate in the show. The goal is to get sponsors for international artists to participate in the symposium. VIII. (The color naturally degrades over a period of months). Ms. Lorenz submitted many other pictures • Mr. Bill Orlove reported on the "Cloud Gate" piece (Commonly known as "the bean "), by artist Anish Kapoor located in Millennium Park in Chicago. The sculpture was inspired by liquid mercury and measures 66 feet long by 33 feet high. Mr Orlove explained it exemplifies what public art should be; something that surprises and draws you in. • Chair Deborah Bottorff spoke about the Mosaicultures Internationales Montreal exhibit Once every three years, there is an international competition in horticulture sculpture called "mosaiculture" in a major city in the world. The sculptures are created from living plants. Some of them are supported by steel armatures with some of them rising to 40 feet high. There were 50 major sculptures along a path two miles long. • Vice Chair Christine Moeller reported on the "Knowles Knots" at Knowles Park in Delray Beach. Vice Chair Moeller respectfully stated this sculpture is not very appealing and should have never been commissioned. • Ms. Aylin Tito shared pictures of a project called "Enteractive at 11 & Flower" by Electroland. The project is located in Los Angeles and was completed in 2006 It is a luminous field of interactive LED lights embedded on the ground and responds as visitors walk on the sidewalk. A giant mirror reflects the patterns on the building fagade Ms. Tito enjoyed this project because of how different it is from the projects she normally sees. • Mr. Anderson Slocombe spoke about sculptor Mark di Suvero, who he met when he was in college and briefly worked with. Many of Mr. di Suvero's sculptures are displayed at PepsiCo headquarters as well as on Governor's Island in New York. The sculptures are mostly made of steel and are of monumental size. Mr. Slocombe stated he likes this artwork because it is bold, monumental and because they are displayed in urban settings. • Ms. Coles -Dobay spoke about artist Janet Echeiman. Her sculptures float in the air and change with the wind Ms. Echleman started as a painter and travelled to India to do her Fulbright Lectureship. She had all of her materials shipped to India but her supplies never arrived. She became interested in materials found locally, particularly fishing nets. One of her sculptures is called, "She Changes" located in Portugal. It is made of steel rings and nets that change shape in the 7 MEETING MINUTES ARTS COMMISSION BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA NOVEMBER 26, 2013 wind.
