5. Old Business
A. Lake Boynton Estates Gate Post Proposed Designation
Mr Warren Adams reported the survey is done and will have the designation report ready for
the next meeting The survey revealed a few differences of the new post and the 1925 post.
There seems to have been a carved wall and a different cap on the top of the post. It also did
not appear to have any lights There was, however, a hole that could have possibly been used
for floral decorations of some kind
B. Celebration of Conrad Pickel
Another meeting was held with Ms Pedersen from the Historical Society to plan the celebration
It is scheduled for May 24, 2014 Mr Adams stated he contacted the Finance Department so
the $1500 awarded by the CRA can be used to help cover the cost of the celebration Ms.
Pedersen commented it will be an important event. People will be able to discover the stained
glass artwork that is located in different areas such as the Boynton Memorial Park Mausoleum
Mr Adams also commented it is not known whether Mr. Pickel actually built the industrial units
on 4 Street or installed the stained glass after they were built It was also discovered that Mr
Picket's property at Pence Park received a beautification award from the City for his work there
as well
C. Grant Award Update
Mr Adams reported official confirmation has been received and the smartphone application for
2014 -2015 was ranked in first place If there are any funds awarded towards the grant next
year the City will be the first to receive it It is gratifying to see Boynton Beach win over other
cities to receive awards like this one.
D. Heritage Trail Signs
Mr Adams sent the Board members drafts of seven signs He has kept the information at a
minimum as recommended by the State and the signs will read more like a story rather than
using bullet points The signs are meant to give quick basic information and the QR code (quick
response code) can be accessed for more detailed information Drafts were also sent to Janet
DeVries and Mr- Ms. Smith for review Ms Oyer was also very helpful in getting information on
the Oyer properties on Ocean Avenue Mr Adams commented he has met with the ITS
Department and they are moving ahead with obtaining the QR codes and building the basic
website
Updated quotes from the printers and the sign manufacturers have been received which have
surprisingly gone down from a few years ago. The sign locations have been discussed with the
City Building Department and the CRA and they will move forward with installation Chair Cope
commented the signs are put together well. Ms Oyer was pleased with the pictures and the
architectural drawings. There are five signs still to be done and drafts will be sent to the
members for review

Mr Adams contacted Ms DeVries for clarification on the marina sign. Ms DeVries got in touch
with a member of the Lyman family who sent the information that was needed. The final signs
will be for Pete's Pond, the Mangrove Walk and the three cemetery signs. The brochures will
be completed once the state approves everything.
Mr. Adams thought perhaps there used to be something where Dewey Park is now Ms Ready
commented she heard it was a cemetery at one time but there is no evidence to support this.
Ms Ready suggested asking some of the seniors on the Cemetery Board Ms. Pedersen
suggested looking for a Lyman Boomer map Lyman Boomer lived in Boynton Beach with his
family and drew a 1910 map of the City depicting where each building stood. He did not
indicate a cemetery being where Dewey Park is today. Many people lost their properties when
1 -95 was built. Ms Oyer stated her aunt is the head of the Genealogy Society for the county
and has written books on cemeteries which may be helpful to the project
Motion
Ms Ready moved to approve the format of the signs Ms Pedersen seconded the motion that
unanimously passed.
E. Mission Statement
Mr. Weiss submitted his suggestions at the last meeting and Mr Adams incorporated additional
wording The mission statement being considered reads as follows:
"Boynton Beach will foster an atmosphere that preserves and promotes reverence from
the architectural and cultural history of community by identifying and protecting
significant resources with a view to increasing public awareness of the City's origins and
development ".
Ms. Ready did not like the word "development" and it was changed to "growth"
"Boynton Beach will foster an atmosphere that preserves and promotes reverence from
the architectural and cultural history of community by identifying and protecting
significant resources with a view to increasing public awareness of the City's origins and
growth"
Motion
Ms. Stabile moved to approve the statement using the word "growth" Ms. Ready seconded the
motion that unanimously passed
F. Wells Subdivision Research
Minister Bernard Wright presented to the Board at the last meeting asking for help to recognize
his great grandfather, Robert Wells, who made important contributions to the City. Mr Adams
gave Minister Wright a letter which states the Board is interested in moving forward with this
project Minister Wright will have a role in gathering information as well and feels the letter will
give him credibility to approach people for information Minister Wright wants to make sure his

family is recognized and that their names placed on the memorial plaque Ms Ready
suggested contacting Victor Norfus or Dr. Meeks -Light There is a committee within the Black
community that nominates and approves names placed on the plaque Mr Adams is still
working on putting together an outreach program in the community to gather information
G. 918 SE 4th Street Potential Relocation
There has not been anything new on the relocation of this property. Sister Lorraine from the
Women's Circle reached out to the potential owners and they will work together to hopefully get
this moving Ms. Ready inquired if the CRA was possibly interested in moving the property to
the cottage district and Mr Adams responded he had already approached the CRA in the
beginning of this idea and they were not interested. The issue was raised with the CRA again a
few months later but there is still no interest on their part The best chance for this property to
be relocated is with the potential new owners since they are contractors. However, funds must
still be raised
6. New Business
A. Florida League of Cities Award for the "Boynton Beach Heritage Education
Program
Mr Adams mentioned at the last meeting the City won the award The President of the Florida
League of Cities will present the award to the City at the January 21 City Commission meeting.
Everyone should try to attend
The brochures for the education program will contain the two heritage trails, an interactive map,
online information, the smartphone application, archeology of the site and the Conrad Pickel
event; all have been grant funded, donation funded or time funded at no cost to the City. To
create a program that has won an award in Florida and no money was spent doing it is a major
accomplishment
7. Other
There was no other business to discuss
8. Comments by Members
Mr Shaffer inquired when the heritage signs would be installed and Mr. Adams responded there
is a grant timetable which indicates the entire project must be finished by the end of June Once
the company is chosen to do the signs, they will manufacture and install them Mr. Shaffer also
wanted to know if there will be an unveiling ceremony. Mr Adams replied it has not been
determined when a ceremony would take place, however, it would be a good idea to do it when
the signs are installed, the website is up and running and the brochures are done.
Ms. Pedersen asked about the life span of the signs Mr. Adams responded the signs will have
UV and anti- vandal protection. The signs are being designed to have a metal post in the ground
with a metal holder The actual signs are printed in plastic and should anything happen to them
in the future, only the sign itself would need to be replaced The cost would be minimal

Ms Pedersen commented the Magnuson House was tented for termites. Mr Adams responded
he was not informed about it and wondered if it should have not come before the Board. It is
possible a permit is not needed and that was why he was not informed However, Mr Adams
will check into it
Chair Cope inquired about the future of the Magnuson Mr Adams replied it will either be sold
or leased No other information has come out since the last RFP was issued
Mr. Shaffer commented when he first came onto the Board, every meeting was about the High
School. Mr Adams replied there was a meeting scheduled to discuss what was going to
happen but nothing is known at this time Ms Ready stated as long as it is in litigation, it is
protected and it is still in litigation
Ms Ready wanted to remind the members of the unveiling ceremony of the marker Ms. DeVries
received from the State She invited everyone to attend the unveiling which tentatively takes
place on February 18 at 10 00 a.m at the Boynton Beach Inlet
