The Museum serves children ages 2 -9. On February 6, 2015 we will devote the day's classes to creating Kinetic Art with all of the children. Mission Statement The Schoolhouse Children's Museum & Learning Center strives to engage young children in playful discovery through hands -on, interactive, learning environments that integrate the arts, humanities and sciences in a historical setting. Vision Statement All children will embrace life long learning through the joy of discovery. Recommended Program: What: Just Add Wind! Blow on over to The Schoolhouse Children's Museum and construct your own kinetic masterpiece! Children will be able to construct their own "wind- mobile" from lightweight recycled materials. With just a little engineering and a lot of imagination, your little one will be a true kinetic artist! Cost is $4.00 per child Who: Ages 3 -9 When: Saturday, February 7th 2015 from 10:15am - 12:15pm Where: The Schoolhouse Children's Museum March 25 Arts Commission agenda back up OP ART exhibition artwork purchase opportunity Artist Stanley Slutsky offered a reduction in one of his Op Art paintings for permanent placement in the City. F p - 2002, #139 Symentry, 48" x 48 ", Acrylic on Canvas, priced at $3,500.00 Stan's offer for this artwork is at $900.00 Stan's work frequently sells for $2,000 - $3,500 plus. Decision considerations: Since Stanley Slutsky's artwork is "Op Art" it will fit into the Art in Public Places vision of featuring kinetic artwork in the City distinguishing it from many other Public Art Programs. AIPP budget funds are limited and present focus is on 2015 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium funding March 25 Arts Commission agenda back up Tuesday, April 22, 2014, 9 - 10:30am Old Dixie Eco Walk butterfly and native plant ID Old Dixie Eco Walk public art project is a reforestation project to attract and sustain butterflies. The North American Butterfly Association (NABA) local representative will inform the public about the butterfly migration, endangered butterflies and their habitats. Eco Artist, Lucy Keshavarz will inform the public about the Old Dixie Eco Art project and its purpose. Horticultural experts will inform the public about the benefits of native plantings and butterfly gardens. City staff will introduce the public to the benefits of the Old Dixie Eco walk reforestation project and its contribution to the future Blueway, greenway, bikeway project. The ELEMENTS Exhibition Conservation Exchange Thursday, April 24, 2014, 7 - 8pm Participate in the conversation about the environmental conservation movement in South Florida. Collectively, three artists engaged in conversations and site visits with leaders of organizations throughout South Florida. They observed, documented and processed their images and experiences. The artists created three collaborative artworks which are the centerpiece of the "Elements" exhibition. Each artists contributed his medium to the collaborative artworks: Rolando Chang Barrero, painting; Anthony Burks, Sr, drawing; and Greg Matthews, photography. The collaborative artworks are not only esthetically pleasing but socially impactful. Each artist also has several individual artworks exhibited to demonstrate their medium and commitment to environmental issues At 6:00 - 7:OOpm in the Boynton Beach City Library Program room the artists and three members of the South Florida conservation movement will talk about their programs. The public is invited to participate in this conversation. Learn from conversation leaders: "Fire in Florida" by Rob ?, Ranger for Jonathan Dickenson State Park March 25 Arts Commission agenda back up "Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge" by Matthew Schwartz, South Florida Wildlife Association "Rare Species impact on South Florida" by Karen McGovern, Rare Species Conservatory Fund At 7:OOpm visit the 2nd floor of the City Library for an interactive conversation with the artists, conservation organization leaders and volunteers while studying the "Elements, fire, water, earth," exhibition artwork. The Elements Exhibition and Conservation Exchange program supports the City of Boynton Beach's green programs including Earthweek activities, Climate Action Plan, Galaxy E3 Elementary School, Seaborne Cove and its Old Dixie Eco Walk. Kinetic Butterfly placement in butterfly garden at SCM Between 1:30 - 2pm on March 25, 2014 the Boynton Beach Garden Club will feature the new butterfly garden on its garden tour as its second stop. Schoolhouse Children's Museum and City staff will greet the Boynton Beach Garden Clubs tour participants to thank the clubs community project committee for their contribution for all to enjoy. The Boynton Beach Garden Club dedicated time and materials to plant and maintain a new butterfly garden along the east side of the Schoolhouse Children's Museum. Glenda Hall, the City's Forestry and Grounds Manager, guided the process so that the garden conformed to landscapes and greenways throughout the City. This new garden connects the many native plantings for butterflies to migrate around Boynton Beach including Old Dixie Eco Walk at Seabourn Cove. Included in the garden is artist David Langley's kinetic butterfly. He was pleased to have it continued display in the City following the 2013 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium. The bright yellow butterfly was installed to a custom made cement pad and sits high above the butterfly plants amongst the garden. It's an eye catching sculpture that signifies the garden and its purpose to attract and sustain butterflies. Programming at the Schoolhouse Children's Museum features the butterfly larvae, chrysalis and caterpillars that live in the garden. Students collect and display them in the window that overlooks the garden adding to educational experience. Date: March 11, 2014 To: Debbie Coles -Debay Public Art Manager Boynton Beach Art In Public Places City of Boynton Beach, Florida From: Audrey Dance Gerger President of Boynton Beach Garden Club Memo: The newly planted butterfly garden planted by the Boynton Beach Garden Club would like the board to consider the addition of a giraffe statue to the garden. The giraffe is 21 inches wide and 30 inches high. Please see the photo enclosed. Because this is a children's museum, this is a very fitting statue to the museum. A giraffe collection was given to the museum in memory of Maryann Loser and this is the final piece to the collection.
