Library Advisory Board Minutes
April 23, 2014
The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board
members were present except Deb Hoban. The minutes of the March 26, 2014 meeting were postponed.
Correspondence: An email from Deb Hoban was received regarding her absence.
Public Audience: None.
Chair's Report: Jeannie distributed a brochure titled, Taxpayer Return on Investment in Florida Public
Libraries 2013. The brochure explained that for every dollar invested in public libraries, Floridians receive over
ten dollars of economic benefit. Jeannie encouraged board members to call and email city commissioners
before the budget hearings in July to encourage support of the library's programs and budgets.
Unfinished Business:
Craig distributed the Over -Drive e-books report for March 2014 and reported that the North Miami Beach
library is joining the system. The report shows that Boynton's Overdrive patrons checked out 467 items in
March. Boynton Beach Library is in first place for checkouts, ahead of Delray Beach library which had 448
checkouts. We added 34 new patrons to the system. A listing of titles on the e-book hold list was distributed
and reviewed too.
The Unique Management Collection Services report was also distributed to the board. The collection service
% of Dollars activated is at 49.88 %, with $6,757 total dollars recovered to date. In addition the program has
recovered over $14,000 in materials.
During the staffing update Craig stated that he was conducting phone interviews with four people after reposting
the position. It is very hard to find someone with supervisory and public library experience who will take a part
time position. An open page position is being posted for five days.
Work on the Digital Creative Commons (DCC) area for teens continues. Currently, the State Aid check is being
held up due state level issues. Once it is received more equipment and supplies will be ordered. The acoustical
tile samples are being reviewed for ordering. Additional OCR software used to search and view the library's
archived microfilm records has also been ordered.
New Business: The budget Request for FY 2014 -2015 was distributed and reviewed. The budget is essentially
flat compared to last year's budget. It has already been submitted to the city manager for review. Craig
mentioned that funding for increased bandwidth is included in the budget. He also noted that State Aid funding
and Friends of the Library funds are not reflected in the budget. The Friends have approved approximately
$34,000 for library materials and programming expense next year. Other community donations are received as
well, including sponsorship of magazine purchases.
Library Director's Report: Craig distributed the monthly report for March and highlighted an increase in
patron visits over the previous year. Also, there were 6,420 computer uses reported in March. Tutoring,
literacy, and homework help sessions provided by AmeriCorps members continue to be extremely popular.
The next library board meeting is May 28, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
