Library Advisory Board Minutes
February 26, 2014
Chair's Report: Election of Officers took place. Jeannie Taylor was elected Chair, Barbara McGee was elected Vice -
Chair and Valerie Pleasanton was elected Secretary. Ms. Taylor stated there are two Alternate positions open on
the board.
Unfinished Business:
Anne Watts reported the Over -Drive e-book contract has been renewed. The report shows that Boynton has 29
new users this month.
The Unique Management Collection Services report was also distributed to the board. The collection service has
recovered nearly $13,000 in materials to date, and recovered over $6,000. Annual ROI information will be
presented at the next meeting. ROI equals $2.70 in return for each $1.00 spent for the service.
Anne sadly reported that Betty Moreno, Library Page passed away a couple of weeks ago. Two Page positions will
be posted soon, one was already vacant. Betsy Faherty, Library Associate will retire March 8 We will be recruiting
for one Library Associate and one PT Division Head Librarian.
The Digital Creative Commons (DCC) area for teens is almost complete. The door is in place with a new green color
painted on the walls. We have purchased four Canon cameras. The cameras originally sold for $150, we purchased
the cameras for $49 each on sale. A Yamaha musical keyboard has been purchased as well. Several South Tech
music students come to the library and are very happy to have the keyboard here to do their homework.
Headphones are used to avoid a disturbance. Six ukuleles have been purchased as well at about $30 each to use in
programming.
Anne reported the Friend's Author Luncheon was lovely. It is unknown how much money was raised at this point.
There was a good turnout.
New Business: Juvenile Card renewal draft proposal and pledge card. Many kids cannot borrow materials or check
out materials if the parent or legal guarding cannot come into the library to renew the kid's cards or if they owe late
fines. Now, school aged kids can read off their late fines and renew their own cards. For every 10 pages read, $1.00
in late fines will be removed. They will also sign a pledge card that they will read off the fines. This will allow more
access to computers and much needed reading materials and remove barriers to library service. The Board agreed
it was a great idea and fully supported the new policy.
Another new policy will allow kids to check out kids DVDs (J). We will also create a young adult DVD section so they
can check them out as well.
The Computer Use policy was updated and fine -tuned and fits on one sheet of paper. You must have your own
library card and use your own time. What you look at must be legal. You cannot make noise or you will be asked to
leave. This policy applies to kids and adults. Adults will be allowed two 90 minute sessions per day. The kids will
be allowed two 45 minutes per day. If the computers are not busy time may be extended if computers are not busy.
The incorrect wording will be corrected. The Board supported the updated policy.
Library Director's Report: Anne discussed the monthly report for January. Ebooks circulation has increased.
Juvenile Circulation is expected to increase because of the new policy. The final signup assistance for the
Affordable Care Act will be here next Saturday. This program has attracted new library users.
The next library board meeting is March 26, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 4:47 p.m.
