V. Announcements/Presentations/Correspondence
Ms. Claude distributed Funfare Magazine to the members and announced registration
for the Tennis Carnival on April 25 was included in the Special Events section.
I. Public Audience
Jeanne Heavilin, representing the Boynton each Sister Cities Committee,
apprised the Board all the schools have been contacted about the Young Artists/Young
Authors program. The Committee wanted to continue to have the exhibit at the Boynton
Beach Mall. Mall staff would not, however, confirm the exhibit, so the Committee
members were working on an alternate location. On a different matter, it was noted the
Christa MacAuliffe Middle School principal dropped the art program from the school's
curriculum.
Ms. Heavilin thanked Ms. Claude for her assistance with the Sister Cities fundraiser.
Ms. Heavilin had emailed her because the Sister Cities organization could not sell
poinsettias because they lacked the proper insurance. Ms. Claude was able to secure
the insurance and the proceeds of the sale of the plants would be split 50/50. She
advised the poinsettias were being sold at ACE Hardware and they make nice gifts.
Sister Cities wants to send a Boynton Beach youth to the Youth Summit being held July
16th to the 18 in Minneapolis. No theme was yet set. This is part of Sister Cities
International program. Last year, Ms. Heavilin and former Board Member Kellsie
Kershaw submitted an application. Ms. Heavilin commented airfares would be about
$400 and Sister Cities may approach the Board in the future if their student
representative needs financial assistance. They were also working with Les Cayes and
Qufu to send a youth to the summit, but the Committee was requesting those countries
pay for those accommodations. They have not started advertising the Summit to
students, but planned to do so after the holidays. Ms. Heavilin would contact the media
about the opportunity. It was thought a 13 year-old was too young to travel to the Youth
Summit, and the appropriate grades were freshman, sophomores or juniors. The cost
for the conference was $425 so only transportation may need to be sponsored. Ms.
Heavilin pointed out this was a great opportunity for high school students.
Chair Waldman suggested checking with some of the guidance counsellors. The Youth
Leadership Program may also start again when they hire a permanent staff member. A
part-time employee was hired and they are advertising for registration for the spring
season. The deadline to submit an application was March 13 , the last day before
spring break
Dr. Hayden agreed if guidance counsellors were unsuccessful, some schools may have
model United Nations Program and those students may benefit from the exposure. The

guidance counsellors would be familiar with those students and could work an
internship with the Youth Summit.
There is a list of guidance counsellors that could be accessed through the school district
that she can obtain. Boynton Beach, Santaluces, South Tech and Park Vista High
School students were eligible, with a preference for a Boynton Beach resident. It was
noted at least one or two chaperones should attend with the students.
VII. New Business
Ms. Colebrooks commented two weeks ago there was a storytelling festival at her
school. She sent invitations to the Board and to Harvey Oyer, III, who was present.
They read his book "The Adventures of Charlie Pierce, the Last Caloosa," and there
was an article in the District News on the Palm Beach County District website about the
event. They interviewed her and Mr. Oyer spoke about things his family did for the
community. He commented he spoke highly of the Board.
Chair Waldman advised he tries to apprise him of the Boards' activities because Mr.
Oyer had donated to the Board in the past. Ms. Colebrook's stated she invited him to
the meeting.
VIII. Old Business
A. Donation Request from Boynton Beach High School football program
This item was to fund a software system to create highlights of sports play, which is
useful to athletes applying for college. The original request was for $800.
Discussion followed the football team was having a successful season; however, more
information on the system versus creating sports footage in -house was wanted. Chair
Waldman did not think they could do it in- house.
The program creates a profile for the student and it includes their stats, game reel
footage and highlights play from actual games. The software also had replay
capabilities which could spotlight students. Further dialogue ensued. Some members
did not think it could be done in- house, wanted to know if there was a fee to create the
footage and thought that the parents of students usually collect footage. Dr. Hayden
_ _ - _ _ - - - • _ _ - - -- - - . Dr, Hayden wanted to research it to
ensure it was the best way to go as it relates to the football program.
Chair Waldman explained this was for college use and Boynton Beach High School
deals with inner city students that do not have a lot of help or funds, compared to other
schools. The students do not have the opportunity to be highlighted. Chair Waldman
commented it was a matter of how the program works and the amount of funding. Ms.
Colebrooks was familiar with the software and explained many coaches review the

footage and it was helpful. Ms. Miller agreed it showcased the weaknesses and
strengths of the player and is also used to improve play.
There was general agreement to obtain further information and wait to see what they
have done to raise funds.
B. Reading Oasis at Rolling Green Elementary - report
Ms. Wilkinson was not present and the item was tabled to the next meeting.
C. Shred -A -Thon — Report
Chair Waldman thanked Ms. Wilkinson and the Board for their help with the event,
which made about $1,100. The "Red Shredder" was great to work with and in total, the
event grossed $1,583, but they paid the workers $486, netting $1147 for three hours of
work. Ms. Spells Anderson noted the advertisement gave the address for the front of
Boynton Beach High School, and Chair Waldman responded that was a common
complaint. It was also noted many people listed their email addresses for the next
event and Ms. Claude agreed to try to schedule the next event if a tentative date or
timeframe were given. She suggested an April or May event, after tax season, and
would contact the company to see what dates they had available.
D. Adopt -A- Classroom
At the last meeting, there was discussion a donation to the Adopt -A- Classroom program
could be made to an individual. The donation amount was about $100. Chair Waldman
inquired if the members wanted to fund an elementary, middle school, or more.
Dr. Hayden commented Rolling Green was receiving a lot of assistance. Chair
Waldman would be thrilled to help Galaxy Elementary School, but thought other schools
may need it more as Galaxy Elementary is a state -of -the art school.
Ms. Colebrooks mentioned Nadia Stewart at Forest Park asked her about the Adopt -a-
Classroom program. Chair Waldman noted he had a request from Boynton Beach High
School, who was requesting help for a Visual Arts Program that had no start up
supplies. Chair Waldman suggested helping this program and Forest Park.
Motion
Ms. Spells- Anderson moved to donate to Nadia Stewart of Forest Park Elementary
School and the Boynton Beach High School Visual Arts Academy teacher. Ms.
Colebrooks seconded the motion that unanimously passed.

The Board had donated $100 to each class in the past, and Ms. Spells- Anderson and
Ms. Colebrooks agreed to an amendment to donate $100 to each. The checks will be
made out to the schools.
Chair Waldman noted Congress Avenue was underserved.
E. Tennis Carnival — April 25
Ms. Claude reported Hunters Run secured the date for the Tennis Carnival. Chair
Waldman reviewed the history of the event and the part former Board Member, Phyllis
Stern played in the event. There may be an issue with calling the event the Phyllis
Stern Memorial Tennis Carnival, and Hunters Run may need to approve the change.
Ms. Claude would investigate the matter further with Vice Chair Morera who handles the
event.
F. Youth Volunteer Bank/Bob Borovy Award
No report was given on the Youth Volunteer Bank. Ms. Claude inquired if the Board
wanted to continue with the Bob Borovy Award as had been done in the past. She
commented $1,000 was given to the first place winner. If there were less than 10
applicants, the second place award was $300. If there were more than 10 applicants, a
third place award of $200 would be made. She noted there was $2,600 left, which
would be depleted in two years and she asked if the Board wanted to adjust the award
amount so it could continue for a longer period of time.
Chair Waldman gave the history of Bob Borovy, a former board member who passed
away. He suggested cutting the award in half for a year and then funding that account.
The first and second place awards could be cut in half to $500 and $150.
Motion
Ms. Spells Anderson moved the Borovy award this year is for $500 for the first place
winner and $150 for second place. Dr. North seconded the motion that unanimously
passed.
Chair Waldman commented it would be helpful if the Board made $1,000 from the
poinsettias sale.
Chair Waldman announced if a member's term on the Board was up, they needed to
resubmit the application. It was noted Ms. Colebrooks and Ms. Miller were reappointed
at the last City Commission meeting.
