Minutes 12-03-14 CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH Boynton Beach City Library Library Advisory Board Minutes December 3, 2014 The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board members except Barbara Weinberg were present. Assistant Library Director Anne Watts attended as well as Melissa, a guest who is taking a Social Work Policies and Prevention course. Approval of the meeting minutes from October 22, 2014 were tabled. Correspondence: Barbara Erlichman sent in a letter of resignation. Public Audience: None. Chair’s Report: Jeannie encouraged board members to invite friends who are interested in the library to apply for a Library Board position. Unfinished Business: Library Director, Craig Clark distributed the Over Drive e-books report for October and November 2014. The report shows that Boynton’s Overdrive patrons checked out 454 items in November. New user numbers are increasing steadily and the service is popular. The Unique Management Collection Services report was also distributed to the board. The collection service has collected $8,423 dollars to date. In addition the program has recovered over $18,000 in materials. We lose about $30,000 annually in material and the service has proved to be an effective recovery tool. During the staffing update Craig stated that one part time staff was terminated for rule violation. There is a good candidate for the position already. Nine candidates were slated to take the online shelving test before the final choice is made to fill currently open part time positions. The Virtual Zone tour for board members will be held after the meeting next month. The rules for the room were distributed and look reasonable with some provisions made for students who helped plan the room but who have aged out. The new sign is going up this week. The Transparent Languages Database is up and running and provides access to 80 languages through the website. State Aid funding was used to pay for the program which allows access from home or the library. The Read for the Record program was a big success with the Mayor and staff members reading to about 2,000 children. Boynton Beach received a big basket of books for the win! Craig informed board members that new forms had to be signed with the corrected dates. New Business: The AmeriCorps Adult Literacy Mentor has resigned to take a paid position. The staff is hopeful that a replacement will be in place in January to continue this much needed service. About 90 students are enrolled in the Homework Help program with about 50 teens receiving assistance monthly as well. The Adult Reading club will begin in January and run through April. The prize may be a nice umbrella. The Friends of the Library pays for the prizes. Craig noted that about half of those who register actually collect the prize. The Friends have decided to change their fundraising event to a Trivia Night instead of the Book and Author Luncheon. Hopefully the venue will be the Boynton Woman’s Club. The Summer Reading Program theme has been chosen: Superheroes, both comic and local real heroes. The Comcast grant paying for the computer classes will go through March. Library Director’s Report: Craig announced that the State Statistician has recommended Boynton Beach City Library as a place doing a great job with teen programming! Craig also distributed the monthly report for October 2014 and made note of increased visits but decreased circulation. E-book circulation and Freegal music downloads are both up. Craig shared that he is now the President of SEFLIN. He also distributed the Taxpayer ROI pamphlet and the Friends newsletter. The next library board meeting is January 28, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the program room. Valerie Pleasanton, Secretary
