Minutes 02-25-15Valerie Pleasanton, Secretary CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH Boynton Beach City Library Library Advisory Board Minutes February 25, 2015 The Library Advisory Board meeting was called to order at 4:06 p.m. by Chair Jeannie Taylor. All board members except Barbara McGee were present. The meeting minutes from January 28, 2015 were approved as distributed. Correspondence: None. Public Audience: None. Chair's Report: Jeannie Taylor reported that she had attended a workshop with Director Craig Clark and Assistant Director Ann Watts along with representatives from other Palm Beach and Martin county libraries. The topic discussed concerned how boards can work together better. One takeaway from the workshop was the idea to appoint a liaison from the Library Board to the Friends of the Library Board to establish better communications between the groups. Craig noted that the library is dependent on the Friends for funding support. He also reported that the Friends are currently selling Hearts to raise money and also sending out donation request letters. Unfinished Business: Library Director Craig Clark distributed the Over Drive e -books report for January 2015. The report shows that Boynton's Overdrive patrons had 451 checkouts, a 14% increase over the same month last year. Twenty eight new Boynton users signed up in January. The Unique Management Collection Services report was also distributed to the board. The collection service has collected $9,553 dollars to date. In addition, the program has recovered close to $19,800 in materials. During the staffing update, Craig stated that Marc Cadet who was promoted to fill a part-time Library Aide position from a page position is working out well. Craig is interviewing candidates for the vacant positions of Library Page and Library Aide. He also announced his intention to request funding for the Digital Services Librarian position in the next budget. The Transparent Languages Database is up and running with 90 users signed up. Twenty four different languages have been accessed more than once with English for French speakers remaining the most popular. Zinio, the new online magazine subscription database, was demonstrated by Craig. There are 110 magazine choices, which can be checked out. Some popular choices included National Geographic, Cloth Paper Scissors and Spirituality and Health. Fifty two magazines have been checked out in the short time the program has been active. Assistant Director Ann Watts shared statistics on the Adult Reading program that just began. There are 166 adults registered and 27 people have already completed their ten book reading goal and received the prize. New Business: The new 2015 YALSA/ Dollar General Summer Reading Resources Grant was awarded to buy books and materials to support the Heroes theme for the summer reading program. The funds will supplement materials in the anime and comic genre and also purchase books used in the kids and teen book discussions. Ann mentioned that Tate's book store has been a good partner for these materials also. Craig discussed the 2015 State Aid grant of $90,137 and the technology it funds. He also mentioned the addition of two new literacy computers specifically programmed for children up to eight years old which were received from the state library (LSTA funded). There are also ten tablets loaded with math and reading games available in the children's department. Library Director's Report: Craig reported meeting with the new State Librarian Amy Johnson and discussed the need for lobbying state representatives for more funding for State Aid and library cooperatives. He will be attending Library Day at the Legislature on March 17 to give information about SEFLIN and the services it provides. Craig distributed the monthly report for January 2015 and made note of increased E -book circulation, Freegal music downloads and a large jump in Juvenile and Young Adult circulation. The board discussed whether increased use of NetFlix use could be responsible for lower Audiovisual circulation. The next library board meeting is March 25, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the meeting room.
