Mangrove Gates wins Florida Federation of Garden Clubs award
Jan Engoren jengoren @tribune.comMay 14, 2014
Mangrove Gates, a Boynton Beach Art in Public Places project at the PNC Bank at 162o S.
Federal Highway, won the Unsolicited Award for Planting in a Public Space by the Florida
Federation of Gardens Clubs.
As one of four categories under the unsolicited landscape design awards, the award recognizes
well- designed and well- maintained landscaped areas in the public sector.
Barbara Hadsell, a member of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs in District X, said, "We
are intrigued by the landscape architect's concept and vision of the design encompassing the
whole bank area, and not just a feature at the entrance."
"The project is well conceived, requires little maintenance and translates information about
native and indigenous Florida plants to the public," she said.
The Boynton Beach Garden Club submitted the entry to the Florida Federation of Garden
Clubs District X, which covers the area from Sebastian to Boca Raton.
Submissions were judged by first impressions, suitability of design to purpose, design,
implementation, maintenance and final impressions.
Inspired by the Mangrove Park and boardwalk in Boynton Beach, Matt Rowan,
environmental artist and designer, and Jonathan Toner, landscape architect, set out to create
a thought - provoking and evolving piece of environmental art and bring awareness of the
larger environment to the public.
The installation comprises sculpturally undulating supports emulating the rivers of grass in
the Everglades, and the water and winds that create constant movement.
Part of Rowan's goal was to integrate the natural world with the man -made world and to
engage the building as an organic growth and a reminder of the interplay between man -made
structures and the natural environment.
"Mangroves and the sensitive coastal environment are kind of magical," Rowan said by phone
from his office in Washington, D.C.
"They're unlike other things you see in the world," he said. "This idea drove the design of the
garden. I created a metal sculpture that will oxidize over time and while not organic, will age
and change in an organic way."
"The sculpture is symbolic of the natural processes that occur in nature and addresses the
phenomenon of the natural environment," Rowan said. "We can't control what will happen,
and I've tried to incorporate its natural beauty into the design."
"It's an evolving garden," he said.
Within the structure are carefully selected and curated plant species that add softness, texture
and changing colors.
In the evening, lighting illuminates the green wall into a dramatic, gently swaying garden.
Florida Federation of Garden Club members Emilie Palmieri and Emily Kane presented an
award to Al Hashemian, branch manager of the PNC Bank, and Debby Coles - Dobay, public
arts manager for the city of Boynton Beach, on April 25 at their annual spring meeting.
"This award means we are accomplishing our art in public places vision, 'to connect the
cultural environment in Boynton Beach with the global community,'" Coles -Dobay said.
Hashemian said he is thrilled with the garden.
"We're excited and happy to be recognized," he said. "It's a true testament to what PNC Bank
stands for. We're all about being green. Our building is a green building, built with recycled
materials and the garden design with its living wall is green and beautiful."
"The design of the building and the garden is unique and we're proud of it, especially in this
commercial area of the city," Hashemian said. "It's a striking and beautiful landmark on a
busy street corner. It's an honor to receive this award."
Subject: Conrad Pickel Celebration recap
Brief overview for this past Saturday's Conrad Pickel Celebration, May 24, Sam - 1pm.
The general consensus is that the event was a great success. The bus tour attendance was 80 and the
presentations 60. Some of the bus attendees did not stay for the presentations and new attendees came
for the presentations. They all stayed for the stained glass demo and the Conrad Pickle exhibition.
Everyone that I had conversations with commented that the Celebration was excellent! The survey
feedback forms confirm this as well.
This morning I received an email quote from a attendee below that reflects the comments we heard:
"Wanted to acknowledge and thank you for a great job on the Conrad Pickel event yesterday
I had no idea that this amazingly creative person and his work was right in our midst! My
friend and I regretted not having done the Bus Tour. And the Historical Society presentation
was great! Thanks so much for enriching our lives.
Gloria Del Franco
Lake Worth, Florida 33460"
Even through the Celebration's attendance majority was ages 65 +, we did have a diverse demographic
with an equal attendance of men and women aged 25 -64. Income level's were equal for the $42,000 -
$51,999 and the $75,000+ groups. The survey form showed that 13 were from out of town and 5 spent
$150.00 + to attend the event. Warren Adams will provide a detailed report to the CRA board.
Most important is that many participants whether they lived in Boynton Beach or not had no
knowledge of Conrad Pickel and his contribution to Boynton's art and culture. They were amazed by
the impressive historical imprint he left in our City. Some of the attendees knew Conrad, have
purchased his former resident or artwork. These new connections provide additional information for
next years Celebration. The City, churches and businesses that housed Conrad Pickel artwork received
great exposure from this Celebration. This Celebration provided positive press for the City and
contributed to its Strategic Goals: Boynton Beach: Our Community Vision.
This Celebration was a collaboration between the City of Boynton Beach Historical Preservation, Art
in Public Places, The Boynton Beach Historical Society and Conrad Pickel Studios with funding by
the CRA and support by the City Library.
Below are the links to the articles for this Celebration. An additional article will be in the Coastal Star
from the reporter that attend the event.
