ILLUMINATION SUMMARY • D. INDEPENDENT TESTING REPORT • • Wa Congress Avenue Tennis Center, 146574 • Assessment of Field Performance of Musco Green Generation Lighting® System Prepared by Christian K. Monrad, P.E., LEED AP 23 May 2014 Executive Summary The following report is my assessment of the field performance of Musco's Green Generation Lighting system; in particular the ability to provide illumination levels that meet or exceed the design illumination levels for the duration of the useful lamp life. Upon review of representative laboratory and field test data by Musco and my own field evaluations, I find the system utilizes a lumen maintenance control strategy with automated timed power adjustments that is applied such that illumination levels do not fall below target design levels during the useful life of the Tamp. Background (Overview) Green Generation Lighting system, often referred to as Light - Structure Green'" system or SportsCluster Green' system, was introduced in 2005 and has since been installed in thousands of sports - lighting facilities around the world. An independent study by Mosher Engineering Co., • Kent Mosher P.E. (deceased 2009), proved the performance of the system met the claims of maintaining the illumination level with +/- 10% of the design level for the duration of the useful Tamp life, and beyond to 25 years with proper lamp maintenance. In 2010 the IES RP -6 sports lighting committee published a clarification to the design guideline for maintained illumination levels. The new guideline stated that the illumination levels shall not fall below the design level (maintained level) at any time. This removes the previously understood and accepted +/- 10% allowance in maintained and constant illumination levels. Musco has implemented design changes to ensure all reasonable efforts are taken to meet the new guidelines of maintaining illumination levels at or above the target level. Methodology The assessment of the system performance included review of representative data from over 500,000 hours of laboratory and field testing data provided by Musco, review of previous field evaluation by Kent Mosher, P.E.; and personal evaluation of field performance of five sports fie!ds in the Phoenix, AZ area. Based on the provided engineering data and previous field studies, an expected field performance metric was formulated. This was then applied to the measured performance of • the five sports fields to evaluate the overall field performance. Results • To accurately predict illumination levels and achieve results in the field that closely match the predicted levels is challenging. It requires a thorough understanding of the performance of the Tight, structural and electrical components of the system. Engineering data provided on these components indicates Musco understands the lumen maintenance of their 1500 watt Z -Lamp and accounts for such in the photometry and adjusts for lumen and dirt depreciation via timed power adjustments using their proprietary Smart Lamp technology. Additionally, strict quality control measures are followed to ensure performance. As such, the Light Loss Factors of 1.0 used in Musco's designs is appropriate. In the study conducted by Mosher Engineering in 2006, field performance of the lighting system was confirmed to meet the claims of illumination levels within + / -10% of the design levels for the duration of the useful lamp life. The actual performance of the measured field in the study was with °n -5.3% of the design level. This indicates an increase is needed to achieve new design guidelines of -0 %. Recent design improvements, supported by the aforementioned engineering data, have increased the light output such that the previous crop below design level is now accounted for. Field measured lighting results and evaluation against engineering data indicates the five fields meet the performance claims of the system— constant Tight levels that are maintained at or • above the design illumination level for the duration of the useful lamp life. Conclusion Upon completion of my assessment of the field performance of Musco's Green Generation system I am confident in stating that the system does perform as claimed. Sports - lighting facility owners should expect their illumination levels to be maintained at or above the design level for the duration of the lamp life and beyond to the end of the warranty period, when proper Tamp maintenance is performed. li .1 4 ,5 .7 Hr I _'714 f NA, 5/23/14 EXPIRES 3/31/17 r MONRAD CONSULTING ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS • MOSHER ENGINEERING CO. The product was released in early 2005 and is primarily used in sports lighting applications. Actual field installations of Light-Structure Green exceed 1000 locations. The locus of my study was to evaluate Light - Structure Green, including the Smart Lamp, operating system, and its ability to provide constant illumination within 10% of the design illumination level throughout the life of the lamp and beyond to 25 years, with group lamp replacements every 5000 hours. My evaluation included reviewing the results of over 500,000 hours of Musco's laboratory and • field test data, product specifications, applicable codes and standards. Additionally, t have participated in field testing. The following is a summary of my Endings: Lumen Maintenance: Musco`s laboratory testing of tight-Structure Green luminaires shows predictable lumen maintenance. Field testing recently completed at a simulated ballfieki utilizing production version Ught- Structure Green luminaires and Smart Lamp system, shows a remarkably dose correlation to the laboratory testing. With 10,000 hours of operation on this system, the maximum observed average illumination level measured is 8.4% above the design h vet, which occurred after several thousand hours of operation. The lowest measured reading is —5.5%, occurring at the end of the 10,000 hour test, which also correlates with the end of the lamp's useful life. Variable weather conditions may have impacted these readings slightly. Masco's system accounts for field fawns and light loss factors, as recognized by IESNA, in their illumination designs. Musco has collected data from numerous fields up to 10 years old in a variety of environments across the country to determine the amount and cause of light losses. This data was used by Musco in the design of the Smart Lamp operating system, which provides timed power adjustments to offset lumen and dirt depreciation to keep the illumination levels within 10% of the specified design. Product Reliability: • Light-Structure Green structurally consists of a precast concrete base and galvanized steel pole that is sized according to applicable wind zones and building codes. The luminaire, visor, and crosserrir are designed to maintain aiming alignment in up to 150 mph winds. Ail materials and coatings specified in the Light-Structure Green luminaire are designed to minimize corrosion over the 25 years, even in the most severe sports lighting environments. Musco utilizes industry standard HID electrical components, which have proven reliable in commercial applications. Musco's electrical enclosure is UL Listed to operate in up to 55 degree Celsius ambient temperature without damage to the electrical components or perforrnanoa. This rating illustrates effective heat transfer out of the enclosure, further extending component bte. The laboratory and field date shows the lamp operation complies with ANSI standard C78.43 -2005 American Naironal Standard for electrical lamps: Single -Ended Metal - Halide Lamps. The systsrn is not under driven or overdriven at any point in the lamps life. Since the lamp operates within industry allowances, arc stability, life expectancy or color degradation ooncems commonly associated with improper dimming are not applicable Test results actually shows significant improvement in lamp fife, efficacy, and color rendering for lamps operated with Smar Lamp technology. Based upon my findings, I conclude that Masco's Light-Structure Green system performance • will achieve the stated +,L 10% of design illumination for the duration of their 25 year guarantee with group lamp replacements every 5030 hours.
