"Unofficial" public art placement
The Boynton Beach Art in Public Places program encourages artists and
the creative community to be active and participate in the City's cultural
environment. The AiPP program has a process in place to acquire and
place public art. There is art form known as street craft, often called art
intervention. The art forms are manifested in many ways, from urban
crochet to street sculpture, light projections, miniature sculpture
installations and more.
Street art, identified mostly by graffiti, is now created with light, moss, yarn
and paper. It can be a form of protest or an organized campaign. Street
craft is generally less bombastic then graffiti art. Small -scale work and their
discovery is for the sharpest passerby only these modest artworks are
more than just cultures they build entire narratives and make nothing into
something. Grandmothers crochet is blown up into monumental
installations knitted socks turn into enormous stripy tree covers and park
benches are decorated with cross stitch. They are all kind of a gift to the
community.
When public art is procured and sited many issues are considered. The
basic considerations are public safely, decency and continued
maintenance. Art is subjective and created to make us think, Street Craft's
purpose is highly focused on this concept. Commission artworks 'donated'
to the public on the streets are motivated by creativity alone. The artist and
makers are as free as the works they create.
Characterized by its temporary ephemeral status it is now part of the global
art business. The first decade of the 21st-century saw the peak of this
movement. It's brightest stars turn into gifts presented by heads -of -state
such as Ben Eine's work (http: / /en.wikipedia.org /wiki /Ben Eine) given to
the White House or moneymaking schemes such as the Banksy (http: //
en.wikipedia.org /wiki /) Banksy stencil cut from a concrete wall in North
London and shipped off to a lucrative art auction. It's now a field for
collectors.
The question is should the Art in Public Places program have a policy
document that allows the Board to review the "unofficial" placed artwork,
after it is reviewed by the Public Art Manager for public safety and decency
to be determine if it should remain or be removed?
A book titled Street Craft: Guerrilla Gardening,

by Riikka Kuittinen brings together artists whose

artists to express themselves in ways that seem difficult
or unconventional.
6. Mentalgassi - Germany
Group's work has evolved from posting printed
photographs on to bins and and train ticket machines to ."
