She crocheted 2,500 plastic bags into a piece called "Invasive Species" at the Schoolhouse Children's Museum & Learning Center at 129 E. Ocean Ave. It's all part of new art along Boynton Beach's Ocean Avenue. This week, 11 pieces were installed as part of the city's Avenue of the Arts exhibit. The city has hosted the Avenue of the Arts exhibit for the past nine years, and public arts manager Debby Coles -Dobay says that this year she expects it to help the city's redevelopment efforts. The Avenue of Arts is in the city's Town Square area, on Boynton Beach's Ocean Avenue from Seacrest Boulevard to Federal Highway, an area that is scheduled for major redevelopment in the next two years. "The art has attracted visitors to the area and helps with redevelopment and economic development," Coles -Dobay said. "I hope that people want to come and see the city's potential, amenities, shops and galleries." Participating artists have been from South Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New York or New Jersey to display their artwork. Former mayor Woodrow Hay viewed the art Wednesday. "I think it's going to put us on the map," he said. "It's our unique claim to fame, that's one of our signature events." For Garbani's artwork, she collected the plastic bags and displayed them to resemble kudzu, an invasive plant species. "It shows people how much we throw away and overuse plastic," Garbani said. "We're creating so much waste that it's killing us. I want people to think about the environment and what they throw away." The public art is available for viewing year- round. On Friday, the city will host a welcome reception at the Civic Center, 128 E. Ocean Ave., which is open to the public. "We hope that people enjoy the arts and it inspires them to be creative," Coles - Dobay said. http: / /www. mypalmbeachpost. com/ news / news /local/ new - art- installed- this - week - along- boyntons- ocean- a /nnm6H / ?icmp= pbp referralboxfree -to- premium- referral New art installed this week along Boynton's Ocean Avenue Posted: 1:04 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015 By Alexandra Seltzer - Palm Beach Post Staff Writer BOYNTON BEACH — Boynton Beach's Ocean Avenue got a new look this week as artists from in and out of the state installed their artwork along the avenue. Ocean Ave. The public is invited to attend, and meet this year's artists. The Avenue of the Arts, mainly on Ocean between Seacrest Boulevard and Federal Highway, is in its ninth year and was one of the first programs established in the Art in Public Places program. Every year new art is installed along Ocean. For me installation was easy, Thanks for the use of the hammer drill, and the extra sets of hands putting "A Few Degrees From Plumb and Square" in place. The location for "Zig Zag Boogie Woogie" is very cool. The press & people with the cameras always make the installation feel like an important event, which is pretty much how we feel about it. The reception was equal to the best shows I have been in, and much better than most. At one show walking into the reception another artist said "WOW, linen table cloths. I've never been to a reception with white linen table cloths." The Video, Music, and interest of the people make us feel like rock stars which is always fun. I did like the peddle bar, that was an element of fun I haven't seen before at a reception. Suggestions for improvements: Artists always want more money, but it seems to me any increase in the budget would be an opportunity to add more artists / pieces to the show. Can't go wrong with more artists. Getting a hotel to give the artists a room at no costs or a very low rate like $25.00 would be cool, and put the artists together in one place making it easy to get to know each other. A few of the other shows do that, and some how it makes the whole event better. Lastly artist's like prizes. All in All just keep doing what you are doing. With the blessing of the selection committee I hope to be back to Boynton Beach again. Thanks for everything Bill I 51. ... 1 041 Boynton Beach Art in Public Places Enriching our Community through Public Art Oct. 6, 2015 Britt Feingold, M.Ed.
