Minutes 11-10-16MINUTES OF THE ARTS COMMISSION MEETING HELD AT FIRE STATION NO. 2,2615 W. WOOLBRIGHT ROAD, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2016, AT 6:30 P.M. PRESENT: Kim Weiss, Acting Chair Robyn Lorenz Anderson Slocombe Susan Oyer, Alternate ABSENT: Cindy Falco-Dicorrado I. CALL TO ORDER Debby Coles-Dobay, Public Arts Manager Chair Weiss called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. II. ROLL CALL OF MEMBERS Self -introductions were made. A quorum was present. III. AGENDA APPROVAL Ms. Coles-Dobay added approval of the September 8th meeting minutes as items IV. minutes as they were not yet available. Motion June 9th, July 14th, August 11th, and A through D, and removed the October 13th Ms. Oyer moved to approve the agenda with the amendments. Ms. Lorenz seconded the motion that unanimously passed. IV. APPROVE MEETING MINUTES A. August 14 min, ,+e6 June 9, 2016 B September 8 minutes- July 14, 2016 Minutes C. September 9, 2016 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida November 10, 2016 Ms. Coles-Dobay made a change to the July 14th minutes on page 2 top paragraph, "This was a group of seniors who paint together in Lake €ems Worth." She also noted in the third paragraph "Ms. Coles-Dobay gave a videe visual presentation." On page 3 the second paragraph, artists were given a stipend to install their art, otherwise an" art crew GeFnwee installs the piece." and in the sixth paragraph "... and " ... the Arts Crew provides the lift." She also noted the Kinetic Intentions project was by Elayna Toby Singer. August 11 minutes, Chair Weiss added to the last paragraph on page one, "Chair Weiss commented it was very difficult to judge because there were so many good works. Motion Ms. Oyer moved to approve the minutes as amended. Mr. Slocombe seconded the motion that unanimously passed. V. ANNOUNCEMENTS/REPORTS A. Oct. 22 - BBAD Golden Celebration, Shades of Culture, Murals Ms. Oyer attended the Boynton Beach Arts District Golden Celebration. She thought it went well. She especially liked a woman who book folds, creating designs and patterns when looking at a book leaf. B. Sun., Nov. 13, 3:30 pm — 5 pm - Kinetic Intentions Workshop Ms. Oyer learned the Kinetic Intentions Workshop was 3:30 p.m. Another session from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. will be held with 12 veterans. Commissioner Romelus will attend a 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. session at Art Sea Living Studio. Ms. Oyer advised she can attend the 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. session. Ms. Lorenz will try to attend as well. C. Tues., Nov. 15, 4-6 pm - Kinetic Art Project Ms. Coles-Dobay explained there was a press release in the meeting backup. This event will be held at the South Tech Academy auto shop and students will be building a kinetic artwork with a local artist. This was an ongoing event and they were picking up where they left off the last time. VI. PROJECT UPDATES/APPROVALS A. KLA Preschool Public Art Proposal Review Ms. Coles-Dobay distributed the proposal and advised the Daycare is at 1601 Congress Avenue next to the Marriott. The building was formerly a restaurant and they were changing it into a day care. It is a nice addition to the Boynton Beach community having f►: Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida November 10, 2016 a contemporary, aesthetically pleasing ambiance. Artist Debbie Marucci was the selected artist and the budget was $6,000. Ms. Marucci has done several projects in the City before. The most prominent one was on the gates on MLK Jr. Boulevard and Seacrest. She gave other examples of public art projects she and her husband did as contained in the meeting backup. The project for the preschool would be located at the entrance. There is an enclosed area with a cement walkway to the doors. To the right and left are grassy areas and Ms. Marucci was proposing to create a friendship ring sculpture. The sculpture would be installed on a pad, but the pad would have a play surface so youth can play on it. The rings were 32 inches and 1 5/8 inches in diameter, made of marine -grade aluminum, welded and sanded for safety, hand painted and clear coated. It is not inside the facility. People can view the art at any time as it is in the courtyard, but it is not visible from the road or parking lot. There is a lot of hotel traffic and parents bringing their children to the preschool. The piece will be visible to them. Motion Mr. Slocombe moved to approve the artist. Lake Worth Christian School Public Art Review Ms. Coles-Dobay explained she had brought this to the Arts Commission a few months ago. She explained the school finished the work and they were waiting to get the tile. They finalized the project with the blue tiles. They did not have the light on top of the post, which was now complete and a decorative gate connected to the post was planned. Mr. Slocombe commented artwork from the other school down the street was also installed. Motion Ms. Weiss moved to approve the art. Mr. Slocombe seconded the motion that unanimously passed. VII. INTL KINETIC ART EXHIBIT AND SYMPOSIUM PLANNING A. Marketing Program review 3 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida November 10, 2016 Ms. Coles-Dobay explained the members had discussed marketing in the past and she distributed a handout. The first part was press releases and social media were being worked on. They try to continuously supply information to the press regarding all the components of the event leading up to the weekend of it. As art is installed, the information is added to the website. The members were distributing Save the Date cards. They were distributed at the International Sculpture Center conference and others will be distributed at various City locations and hotel and concierge locations. Eighteen thousand cards will be inserted into the Coastal Star January edition. The Arts Commission also distributes the cards at Art Basel in December and at Art Palm Beach in January. The Arts Commission uses tee shirts for staff and volunteers and also produces the program. They were looking for a promotional item, but they had not yet decided on what would be used. The Arts Commission had discussed social media stations and the International Sculpture Center, which promotes the event through an ad. The event is also advertised in Art Hives. The ad will be corning out in the winter edition and Arts Commission members are at a lot of the different events in South Florida. The event will be advertised in various other locations such as the Links Golf Course. Funfare Magazine will have a full page ad in the next issue. Chair Weiss asked who mans the booth at Art Palm Beach. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained in the past, members had volunteered. The 18th is the opening night, similar to a VIP night. The members had taken different shifts. Ms. Lorenz thought it was exciting as there is a lot of artwork and people there and it provides great exposure. Elayna Toby Singer had items at the booth and she sold a few. Ms. Coles-Dobay agreed to provide the hours to the members and they will put together a volunteer schedule. January 18th is a Wednesday and the event runs through Friday. Setup is during the day. They use billboards and digital events with advertising partners, directional and informational signs, feather and tent banners and street signs. There are some new signs this year. The Arts Commission will use the same branding image. VIII. EXHIBITS A. Palm Beach Watercolor Society Exhibit • Arts Commission judge show Ms. Coles-Dobay explained the exhibit would be installed on Monday, November 14th at the City Library and the Arts Commission had approved this in the past. The reception date is Thursday, December 1St from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Library on the second floor. The Watercolor Society also requested the Arts Commission judge the artwork. Ms. Coles-Dobay had developed score sheets which she distributed to the members and she requested they view the art. The members will select the first, second and third place winners as well as an honorable mention and special recognition. Members should be sure to write down the artist's name, the work and rank the work from 0 to 3 with three being the best regarding composition, use of color, value of the painting, the 4 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida November 10, 2016 emotional impact of the painting, and quality of the technique. The members were asked to visit the exhibit at any time. Once scored, the members can scan and email the scorecards to Ms. Coles-Dobay or drop them to her at City Hal. The members should also include the members name and date. IX. NEW BUSINESS A. Bloomer Tree Repair - schedule and costs Ms. Coles-Dobay wanted to update the Board about the Bloomer Tree sculpture repair. She advised there are several components to the repair. First a fabrication shop will bend the piece back into place, reshape it and structurally reinforce it. The piece had been moved and then the storm hit. It will be reinforced up through the tree itself so it will not bend again and they will make the top part removable from the base. From there it will be transported to Riviera Beach to a high finish polish shop that specializes in this type of work and then it comes back to Boynton Beach and is installed. The cost of $9,255 will come from the public art budget. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained there was a damage assessment conducted after the storm and the damage was coded for the storm. It was hoped the damage would be covered. X. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Wed., Nov. 16. at 6 pm AARP announcement of winner for the Adult Coloring Contest: www.boyntonbeach.org/departments/publicart/events.php Ms. Weiss had flyers to post for the coloring wall and Ms. Coles-Dobay had agreed to make copies of the coloring page to distribute. Now the entries were in, the Arts Commission will select the top ten finalists. The national director of the AARP Book Division was coming to Boynton Beach to select the winner. Ms. Coles-Dobay encouraged all to attend and bring family and friends. XI. FUTURE BUSINESS A. None. XII. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to discuss, Ms. Oyer moved to adjourn.
