Boynton Beach Art in Public Places
Art Exhibit Proposal
May 26, 2016
Exhibit Title: Cocoanut Dreams
Creators: Janet DeVries and Ginger Pedersen
Description: This visual art installation was created from black and white, sepia, and hand tinted
photographic images rescued from a circa 1922 eBay scrapbook. The photographs, taken between
1912 and 1922, illustrate the barrenness and beauty of coastal Palm Beach County as it was a
century ago.
The images depict the lush tropical wilderness and romantic cocoanut groves that were once Ocean
Ridge, Manalapan, Hypoluxo Island, Lantana and Lake Worth. Photos include the wide, deserted
beach, the waterway with launches, fishing vessels and yachts, the bluffs overlooking the Atlantic
Ocean, swaying cocoanut palms, children playing on the wharf, picnics at Lake Worth, Boynton
Hotel cottages, boat rides to Delray, people fishing, and a wooden water cistern. Many of the
images have accompanying hand written descriptions.
Artist: The photographer was A. Romyn Pierson, III whose father, A. Romyn Pierson, II, purchased
all of the all of the land on the east side of the Florida East Coast Canal (today's Intracoastal
Waterway), north of the South Lake Worth (Boynton) Inlet to Lantana Road as a gift for his wife
Leila.
The 1912 purchase made the Pierson's the third owners of the barrier islands; the first was George
Charter, one of South Florida's legendary barefoot mailman, who homesteaded the land in 1886,
and planted a cocoanut farm. The second owner, Elnathan Field, of New Jersey, named the island
Manalapan after a New Jersey Indian Tribe, and in 1894 built Manalapan Cottage, the three story
home depicted in the images.
Installation: The art exhibit will consist of 24 — 30 of the best images from the album reproduced
on stretched canvas. The image sizes will vary from approximatelv 16' by 20' to 24" by 36".
