Boynton Beach, Florida February 23, 2017
Jeanne Heavilin, President, Greater Boynton Beach Sister Cities Committee, 734 NE 9
Avenue, provided an update on the Young Artists and Authors Showcase. It will be held
at the Boynton Beach Mall from April 10-23, 2017, in front of J.C. Penney's. The
awards reception will be April 21, 2017, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the same location.
Ms. Heavilin asked for two or three people to help set up the exhibit on Sunday evening,
April 9, beginning at 6:00 p.m. She also mentioned they need a Certificate of
Insurance, and they would like to list the Board as a co-sponsor. Ms. Claude asked if
they could email the information to her.
Gregory Murphy mentioned there may be reimbursable grants available through the
CRA.
Former Board member Lori Wilkinson thanked the Board members for attending the
Magic Wheels and Special Deals Event on February 10, 2017. She reported that the
5K was very successful.

Angelica Nevin seconded the nomination. Hearing no opposition, the motion carried.
Valencia Spells Anderson nominated Angelica Nevin for Vice Chair, and Carol
Lundquist seconded the nomination. Hearing no opposition, the motion carried.
VII. Old Business
A. Donation Request from Boynton Beach High School Theatre Academy
Valencia Spells Anderson reported there was not enough money to fulfill the entire
donation request. Kathleen Wilkinson said she was part of the Academy and they are
fundraising to help students get to the state competition. She related that her teacher
did not expect the full amount of the request.
Chair North restated the request: $1,000 for the Academy to offset the cost of the trip
for students going to the State performances in Tampa, Florida. Each student's cost is
$400, inclusive of transportation, registration, and lodging. The troupe still needs about
$3,500 to cover the deficit.
Anthony Altieri verified that the funds would come from the Community Contributions
line item. Gregory Murphy pointed out there was not much money in the fund.

Motion made by Gregory Murphy, to award $300 to the Boynton Beach High School
Theatre Academy. Motion died for lack of a second.
Motion made by Angelica Nevin, seconded by Valencia Spells Anderson, to grant $200
to the Boynton Beach High School Theatre Academy. Hearing no opposition, the
motion carried.
B. Fundraising
Angelica Nevin provided an update on the Magic Wheels event. She reported it was a
great event, and she brought pictures to share. They provided water and juice that had
previously been purchased, and the income was $4.00.
Chair North suggested looking into other fundraising projects.
Lori Wilkinson asked the Board not to be discouraged by that event - the Board's
participation was last-minute and not advertised, so people did not even know the
beverages were available.
Chair North pointed out that just attending an event provides a presence for the Board
in the community.
Peggy LaGuerre wondered if the Board had hosted events such as awards for
community members. Ms. Claude said that if they wanted to do something like that at
one of the Recreation Centers, she could facilitate that (for free).
A discussion ensued on whether to hold the shred-a-thon again, with it being mentioned
there is interest from the community. Perhaps it could be modified.
Some ideas for fundraising that were mentioned were:
• Shred-a-thon
o Find company to do it for free or for less money and offer them something
like free advertising in the magazine
o Have youth sell bottled water (with water left over from other events) while
customers wait
o Used to do it after tax season (May) and also October
o Promise the vendor advertising/promotion at places that the Board will sell
water
■ That type of information would be included in the written agreement
with the shredding company
• Have a campaign and bring in other entities such as the Chamber
• Award breakfast or gala

o Have a group of members present a proposal at an upcoming meeting for
discussion (Angelica Nevin and Gregory Murphy volunteered to work on a
proposal)
• Mother's Day breakfast (May 14)
o Do not conflict with anything being planned by Parks and Recreation -
they have a Mother's Day Tea
o Any food has to be from a catering company
• Egg hunt on April 15 - good time to sell water/drinks
o Ms. Claude can check and see if they could be the exclusive provider
Ms. Claude will forward the contact information for the shredding company to the Board
members.
Chair North said she will work with staff to send letters out regarding any extra funds left
over from campaigns. The City Clerk's office has a list of candidates for City elections
in March.
C. Account Expenditure Review - No change since last meeting (except for
$4.00)
D. Youth Volunteer Bank/Bob Borovy Award
Ms. Claude stated that those funds are earmarked. However, the Board could probably
reallocate a portion of the Youth Volunteer Bank funds since they had not given them
out in a long time. The Tennis Carnival is also earmarked for that.
Ms. Claude explained that the Bob Borovy funds came from donations from private
individuals and also funds from the Community Investment Funds through the City. The
funds are used for scholarships that are granted annually in the range of $1,000 -
$1,500. The application deadline is March 31, 2017, and the application is available
online. Ms. Claude detailed her marketing efforts for the scholarships. She also
distributed flyers.
Ms. Claude said that the Youth Volunteer Bank currently has 83 members. A letter will
go out soon to remind them that their hours are due. Students who turn in their hours
are invited to a City Commission meeting where there is a short presentation (probably
in May). If the Board has a preference as to the Commission meeting date, they are to
let her know so she can put it on the agenda.
VIII. Future Meeting Dates: March 23, 2017 and April 27, 2017
Gregory Murphy advised he would not be present on March 23, 2017.
