screech owl
i met this wee one a few days ago
hIdIng out in plain sight overhead
do you see how easily she naps
even with a busybody photographer
snap -snap -snapping below
napping is a resisted but welcome ritual
for me in this new life in the tropics
today a thunderous f lor ida downpour
wakes me to mridering, hoping
the little owl has a dry grotto just for napping
i wonder, too, about the good people
street people wh a came to lunch
earlier today In delray beach
i helped them find needed clothing
what grotto, what warm room
for them in this storm we look out upon
and call beautiful, beautiful
purple swampnen ana cmCK
what a delight to watch them
the little one waddling after her
as she pulls succulent reeds
then breaks off chick size bites
offering them as sustenance
not just for nourishment
but also as a model for
this black fuzz -ball's
eventual independence
only a few, weeks away
i imagine this a more functional
emotionless enterprise than out
letting go our no -longer -little ones
bound for their own singular
wondrous painful nourishing
independent lives
yel I ow -crowned night heron
he rests on one lone toot
this yellow -crowned night heron
oblivious to passers-by
thru camera lenses starIn'
I envy him his daytime rest
this bold postprandial nap
this disregard for, others' views
this solo sacred map
I make too much of this small thing?
this choice for mid-day rest's
if we don't prize our own small things
how shall we claim life's zest?
ige 4 of
pelican
what wand ed
that Love has made
this add creature
with a claw on her beak
to match these clawed feet
with a famously capacious bill
to tote the morning's fishy fare
what wonded
that she hunkers down here
and allows the close mirror
of my camera crouch
as I take in the Intricacy
of her wondrous wings
and reconsider my
definition of
beauty
