Archives Activities
• Worked with Diana Dennis to complete documenting the last of Esther Orr's photograph albums prior
to rehousing them. Started documenting 15 photograph albums and rehousing the photos that depict
the Boynton Beach Elementary School in the 1970s and 1980s. This project is expected to take several
months to complete.
• Worked with intern Kayleigh Howald to process the Boynton High School collection. We are also going
through backlogged materials to see if there is High School material to add to the collection.
• Continued sorting the old Deeds of Gift (pre-2013) to determine what sorts of transfers might be
necessary to clarify that the Library owns the items. Completed seven new transfers for the Boynton
Cultural Centre board to sign. Went through the entire accession log and confirmed existence of all
paperwork for each accession. Noted locations of all items (where we could find them) and noted
missing items. Did the same for Boynton Beach Historical Society accession from 2016. Accessioned
items with pre-2013 Deeds of Gift given to the BBCL.
• Started working on 2018 LSTA Grant application. Spoke with Colleen at Northern Micrographics for
pricing on remaining newspapers to be scanned. Emailed Vicki and spoke to the Lake Worth Herald
about the possibility for contributing matching funds for the second phase (both will get back to me).
• Applied for the SEFLIN Breakthrough Award for the Lake Worth Herald Digitization Project (1912-
1970), requesting funding for one of the servers that is not covered by the LSTA funding.
• Had two patrons researching in the archives: one using the Boynton Woman's Club collection and one
using a local history reference book.
AmeriCorps Report:
ADULTS
ESOL Classes:
Beginner Class
The Beginner ESOL class was held from 9:OOam-10:15am from Monday thru Thursday. 14 total classes were
held throughout this month. 218 seats were occupied throughout the 14 classes. The average amount of
students in class was 15. The largest class size this month was 23 students. 35 individual students signed up
for this class, and all 35 actually attended classes at least once:
-7 students (20%) attended only one class
-4 student (11%) attended two or three classes
-7 students (20%) attended four to six classes
-10 students (29%) attended seven to ten classes
-7 students (20%) attended eleven or more students
One (1) student in Beginner's class had perfect attendance this month. 13 students (37%) attended both this
class and the Advanced Beginner ESOL class.
This month we continued to focus on grammar. We targeted the Wh/ questions (who, what, when, where,
why, how) and spend a great amount of time on opposites. They had a hard time understanding the words.
They had an amazing time going over the 'what, who, when, where, why, how' question. They felt prepare to
go out and carry conversations with their family and other people that may come across their paths.
We have been using the Side by Side Textbook 1 and the accompanying workbook, as well as the Word by
Word Basic textbook. We are also using the Oxford Picture Dictionaries as an accessory.
Overall, this was a jovial month for our Beginner's ESOL class. My students are always ready to learn yet
again. They practice every day as well as open to new ideas and concepts. The amount of commitment level
for learning in the class, as well as outside the classroom is still going strong. We still have a couple students
that have trouble focusing in class, but it is all doable, especially when it comes to the advance students who
attend this class. Attendance is still rocky, but they are still showing up to class.
Advanced Beginner
The Advanced Beginner ESOL class was held from 10:30am-11:45am from Monday thru Thursday. 14 total
classes were held throughout this month. 90 seats were occupied throughout the 14 classes. The average
class size was 6, although we did have as many as 10 students in class all at once. 17 individual students
signed up for this class, and all 17 attended classes at least once:
-2 students (12%) attended only one class
-6 students (35%) attended two to three classes
-4 students (24%) attended four to six classes
-1 student (6%) attended seven to nine classes
-4 students (24%) attended ten or more classes
None of the students had perfect attendance this month. 13 students (76%) attended both this class and the
Beginner's ESOL class.
This month we continued to work on grammar and conversation yet again, as this is to help in the preparation
of speaking without fear. We spend the entire month working on comparative, superlatives and possessive
pronouns. We also had to tap into understanding suffixes and what to end on at the end of words. We
learned how to expressed opinions on different topics all the while giving constructive advice to each other.
Conversation is greatly encourage in class to help other peers train their ears with the English language (some
students have heavier accents then others, while some speak faster than others).
We are using two textbooks. We have been using the Side by Side 2 textbook and its accompanying
workbook. Practice Makes Pen`ect: English Conversation is the other book that we are using to construct
spontaneous conversational skills. We are also using the Oxford Picture Dictionaries as an accessory.
•
' This class' attendance fluctuates as more students obtain full-time jobs. But the great thing about this
fluctuation is that as students miss class due to their job schedule, new students arrives weekly to learn.
Private Tutoring
Five (5) students signed up for private tutoring and all received one on one tutoring or help this month. All
the five students received help in grammar. Four received assistance in grammar and pronunciation. One of
the students, due to the work conflict, cannot make it to class hours, so she received help on Basic English
lesson that is being taught in class.
Overview
Overall, 50 individual students signed up for ESOL and all attended classes in this month of January. The class
sizes ascended. The walk-ins were still increasing. January has been the month where I really had to be
more serious about technology usage. It has been an ever increasing distraction in both classes, as students
are becoming more aware of'Google' and all its many functions. But, even when I am not against technology,
I am against the distraction that occurs in class, so I advise them to use their electronics outside of the
classroom unless otherwise told to do so. I hope they continue to thrive to do their best as they put their best
foot forward.
