The av~l~ole records ~e not mecess~ily accurate. However~ we felt that since ~bXs was o~ o~y so,ce of ~ormation for the water requirements~ we h~_ to apply logic~ ao~eerir~ to obt~m mu end res~stt .on water requirements which ?~o~d be s~e and at the s~me tLme not ~den the City ~ith s~plus facilities. The r~cords show an average per capita oons~o~ption of 150 glod. The average pe~Z~ daily lemand was found ~o be 400 ~pd. ©ne day of record indicated a peak of 4 million gallons. There were other pe&k days ranging from 3 ~viLlion gallons up. ~% have no real basis for assvm~ing tb~.t the ~ m~llion gallon pe~2~ figure is inco~ect. ~e ~aay question the accuracy but to prove it wror~g is not possible. This coupled ~th the fact that t~ ether peak 8~ys show sands ~ e3mess of 3-~ ~d led us ~o the conclusion that for the sake of good ev~eeriv~ ~and m~mu~ protection to the City of Boynton Beach, a peak d ~ly present demand of ~.0 mgd could exist. Therefor% ~ projected f~re require- ments on thais bas±s. On t~s basis then it ~s de{e-~mined from tbm population projection and the present per capita consult!on that the peak daily demand in the year 1969 would be 8.0 mgd and the year 1979, 12,0. The figure of 8,0 m4d was used a~ the basis for design forwat~ supply and water tr~tment facilities to be const~acted L~auediateiy. At the present- tLme~ the City of Boynton Beach obtains water from two well fields; one is located in the northern section of the City~ the other located ~ the southe~ section of the City. The land. owned by the City in the north- ern tract is appro~ately five acres in one conti~ous strip plus a f~,~ odd lots s~parat~ by p~vately o~n~ prope~y, TD~ southern section area~ in a si~41e tract~ is about 7~ acres. The water obt~n~ from these wells b~s charac- te~_stics wl~ch co~e ~t?~n the l~Ats of U. S. ~blic He~th Se~_ce dr~king water stan~ds in ~ respects~ ~cept h~uess and iron o!us mm~g~ese con- tent. In tb~s coo~_ection~ it is pointed ou~ that U. S, ~ablic Health S~ice d~_Dd~r~ ~t~ st~md~ds for hardness were set ~n the days before synthetic deterEeuts c~e into general use. Synthetic deter- gents are not ~fect~d by b~%ess as are soao prodncts. ~ other words, b~d- ness is not the major consideration to~y that i% ~s several years ago. Con- su~tations ~th the State Bo~d of Health and ~or~ o~3~ .o%~ staff have res~ted in the gener~ ~reement that treatment adeqnate to remove the ~on content wo'~d be s-~ficient for the oresent ~zer s~pply~ ~r~s treamment inas been dete~ned to be aeration, se~mentation~ f~bration and cb~or~ation. ~ne qu~tity of water obtained from the er~sting well fields ~mounts to a pe~ c%pacity of k m~d. The ~gineers~ forecast indicated that a pe~ deraand of appro~mately 8 meal c~ be e~ected to occ~ by goon% 1969~ therefore~ an additior~l supply is needed. The ED~ineers recogDn[zed tb~t the possibi~ty e~sts of obt~ng some ad~tioo~ supply from ~st~ %~ fie!~. How~v%r~ s~a~ust tb~s is the very r~ possib~ty oi salt wat~ ~t~sion. There is no e~ct method for det~ the absolute upper s~e ~_eid of a given well field ~thout pu~ing it to t~t yield mud e:~erienci~ salt water iut~sion, it is recog~zed that this p~tic'~ aqu~er~ not os~y for Bo~mton Beach, bn% ~tl ~long the lo%~ easz coast of ~_ori~ is very close to the upper l~ts. ~ fast: salt wat~ intrasion has already been ~erienced in other nea~oy cities. Therefore~ in view of tb~s~ ~e recommended that additio~ water s,o~ply be obtained by goio~ to the ~es% at s~ficient distmuce to remove the proposed ~ll fields ~yond the l~ts of pr&ogole later~ salt -~.ter in- City of ~oyn~on Beach 3 June 29~ 1960 it was determ3~ued tb~t well fields could be developed in s3_~most stay section west of the E-~ Cam~s~. ~fith this in ~nd~ we then stu~ed the advisability of a~ the ~sting ~ fields ~ud obt~ ~ of the water supply from ~he proposed v~ fields. How~er~ t~s entail~ a v~y defir~te problem. ~l o~ the ~ter ~ ~he ~ea from w~ch the ne~ supply c~ be obta~ued has either one or bo~ of two -~desirgole c~aoteristics. On the basis of these conclusions, there of course remains the possib~ty of locating the new water plant ~ the western section of the City and piping the %~ter from the ~stiD~ fielS~ to the pl~% site. However: a str~ght isou of the raw a~t~ pip~g r~uired indicated ~aat a i~ge ~o~u% in capit~ f~ds could be saved by locating the pl~_t at one of the e~st~ sites and piping addi~on~ ~ter required from the n~ fields %o the pl~t. Both the north and south fields were consid~ed. The north field does not have as !~ge ~u ~ as the south field: thereby ~ting e~ion of the pl~t. The rail- rcad is closer to the south field tb~n the north field. Both of th~se res~o~ would not be of over-~heL~nE weight in dictating the location of one site against location of the other. However~ the a~sis of the ~stribution rem ~m~cated that the existi~ s~te~ is laid out in such a mamuer that sire ch~ges would be nec~ss~~ in the evs~ t~ location was m~.e ~ the north field. The degree of treatment necessary for the er~isting supply ~ad the future supply bm.s been discussed ~mlth the Florida State Board of Health. As pointed out above~ iron removal alone plus disir~ection would be adequate for the ex- isting wa%er supply. Based on pilot studies ~zlth ~ualyses~ sedimentation, f~_itration and cb_tor~_m~ation ~ll be requi~ed. At some future date ~{nen the water suoply from the proposed new fields exceeds tb~t of the e~isting fields~ che~cai-treatment ~ll be necessa~y for the removal of color and softehing~ We have designed the plant tn such a w~v that these additions can. be m~de out any cb~ges in the im~tial o!an. %~e would i~<e to refer the Co~ucil to a sLm&lar ~stino~ plant con, mirus%ed on this basis at the r~igb2ooring City of L~t~ua~ ~e would aisc !~<e to point out tbmt we do not set the m~n~m cri- teria for water standards.
