Over the past year, I have established myself as "The Watercolor Gourmet" and have written the outline for a book describing the common kitchen pantry items I use to make my textured watercolors. This includes cooking spray, instant coffee and tea, plastic wrap, assorted salts, Kool-Aid, foil, contact paper, etc. I bring to each demonstration/workshop my years of experience in teaching and mentoring to others as well as a broad knowledge of artist materials and supplies. I love to bring the excitement of art to all ages. Statement About My Work by Sherie Tengbergen Art and creative applications have been the focus of my entire life's work. I have explored numerous subject matters and media to develop my visual perception and technical skill. However, the focus of my journey in art is watercolors and the use of common kitchen/household items to enhance the richness and texture of my creations. This journey began with multi-media circular landscapes created with watercolors and handmade paper which combined potpourri, scraps of discarded paper, garden shells, and kitchen spices to create even greater textures. The "Tropical Paradise" painting is an example of this early exploration. The second focus involved developing a "dropped water" flower technique which automatically established hard edges and helped develop a series of transparent layers that add to the accuracy of this more traditional depiction of nature (see "Bloomin ` Irises"). I recently discovered the beauty of using deep washes that were then lifted out with clean water to create unusual results. This quest to push the envelope started by using contact paper stencils, various salts, and dry iced tea mix to enhance the texture of the pre-painted paper, as seen in "The Divers Dream" paintings. These three demonstrations/workshops allow students the choice of using mixed media, traditional layering, or a unique stencil process to create new and exciting pieces of art. With each new project, a richer, deeper, and stronger understanding of watercolors encourages me to continue to reach for the stars!
