Sun Boxes is a Solar powered sound installation. It's comprised of twenty
speakers operating independently, each powered by the sun via solar
panels. There is a different loop set to play a guitar note in each box
continuously. These guitar notes collectively make a Bb chord. Because the
loops are different in length, once the piece begins they continually overlap
and the piece slowly evolves over time. The sounds of Sun Boxes have
been described as both soothing and energizing.
I am proposing Sun Boxes for the International Kinetic Art Exhibit and
Symposium in Boynton Beach, Florida, for the opening weekend February
1-3, 2019. Sun Boxes can be temporarily set up in a variety of spaces
throughout the day, throughout the 3 days. Depending on parking I can set
the piece up in 20 minutes. Sun Boxes is a great outreach to young
students. I can envision including some school visits prior to the opening
weekend to help create excitement.
Due to the mobility of the piece it works anywhere there is sun. Rooftops,
are very fun. Sunrise and sunset are great times for the piece. This has
been used as a special event for sponsors. I am willing to do either or
both.
Partnerships with yoga studios, meditation, tai chi types has worked well in
the past. As well as local coffeeshops that can create a Sun Tea to go
along with the experience.
The price for Sun Boxes is $1200 a day plus travel expenses. This price
includes transportation, installation, monitoring, de-installation. I make
myself available to answer questions and give guided tours. I travel in a
mini van quickly and inexpensively.
The musical element of Sun Boxes makes it easy to promote on radio
stations. There is a Sun Boxes record that has two field recordings from
Massachusetts. There is also a short film about three of my pieces that
features quite a bit of Sun Boxes footage. It can be used for promotion.
am more than willing to do interviews.
The Sun Boxes recordings are streaming on all the sites; Spotify, Apple,
Tidal, Google Play etc... There is also an app that allows participants to

Proposal for the 2019 International Kinetic Art Exhibition and Symposium:
A collaborative installation by Anthony Castronovo and Eleonora Nicoletti
We propose to do an installation of the Solar Shimmer project, which was recently
displayed for the first time at the first international Solar Art Festival in Doha, Qatar.
The project consists of a long screen or textile-like installation composed of re-
purposed CDs and solar lanterns. Students participate in a short 1.5 hr workshop led by
the artists to construct the solar lanterns. The artists present an inspiring discussion of
contemporary solar art, unique architectural applications of photovoltaics, and
elements of sustainability such as material waste and re-use. Students complete
lanterns and hang them on the fence in a collaborative construction of the project.
For the exhibition, we realize that timing will be a challenge to coordinate workshops
and participants in a logical way and so we can suggest an alternate presentation
method which is to teach an intensive workshop to a few local art teachers with the
intention that they then work with their students to complete the solar lanterns. We
envision a potential reach of 200 students for the project.
The installation size as presented is 6'tall by 36' long, installed on commercial chain-
link construction fencing panels, which have robust footing to withstand high winds and
pedestrian interaction.
Budget:
Fencing rental and transport $400
CDs(i000) $300
Solar Lights(200) $750
Hardware $200
Oil-Paint Markers $100
Eleonora Stipend $3000
Anthony Stipend &Travel $5000
Budget Total $9750
Proposed Interaction/Impression Potential:
Eleonora will collaborate from London on issues of design and will be available by
email, Linkedln, and video conference calls. She will assist with materials preparation
for teacher workshops and possibly as a virtual presenter for the opening forum if
desired. Areas of focus include creative possibilities for the use of solar technologies
in the built environment. Anthony will be the main local contact and will visit the site in
late fall of 2018 to deliver workshops to area school teachers who will engage their
students to produce solar lanterns for the project.Anthony will return in early spring
2019 to install the work for the inauguration.
This dynamic kinetic installation is activated throughout the day by wind, viewer
position, and the changing position of the sun throughout the day.The CDs are
securely suspended from stainless-steel s-hooks,which allow for subtle movement in
the wind while remaining securely attached even in high winds. The entire length of the
installation will shimmer in undulating patterns during a steady breeze. A rainbow of
light will dance across this undulation as the CDs reflect sunlight. At night the pattern
shifts to a soft blue pattern reminiscent of traditional textiles, waveforms, and
geometry. The pattern depicted above was designed specifically for the site of Doha,
Qatar and was influenced by Bedouin textiles. For the Boynton Beach project we would
design a unique pattern that is relevant to the local site.
On-Site Assistance:two or more volunteers to assist with the installation
Teachers will be provided with:
Solar Lights
Cleaned, used plastic bottles, pre-cut for student use
Oil-Paint markers for students to use
PDF presentations to use with their students to deliver content

"MOVING TOWARD BALANCE" NARRATIVE
Elayna Toby Singer's "Moving Toward Balance" community engagement Happenings expand on
work she presented in Boynton Beach's 2017 Kinetic Art Exhibition and Symposium. Movement
toward environmental and personal balance will be cultivated among participants (ages 10 and up)
through engaging, interactive activities, including creating balanced art that moves.
"Moving Toward Balance" Happenings, comprised of four, one-hour community engagement
Experiences, occur in Dewey Park during the February 2019 Kinetic weekend. "Moving Toward
Balance" offers a series of experiential artistic events rather than a single work of art. Performative,
educational and interactive, public participation brings the art experience to life.
As artist, educator, facilitator, community connector and public place activator Ms. Singer prompts,
performs, teaches and guides participants through a series of unique movements, verbalizations and
mindful experiences in each Happening. An element of surprise is infused in each Happening based
on public participation and responses to prompts, thus making each Happening completely unique
one from the one before. Audience participation is central to the outcome of the art.
"Moving Toward Balance" gives the public a first-hand experience to make kinetic art, their own
special mobile, to take home with them. The "Make & Take" aspect of the Happenings provide a
memento of the Kinetic weekend event, encouraging increased public connection to the annual event.
As participants create balanced mobile, they'll experience firsthand that just as when they're out of
alignment or off center they become unbalanced, the same is true for mobiles.
"Balance Bags" full of all needed materials are provided to each participant. Materials include a piece
of filament already attached with double-sided mirror, as well as Mahogany seed pods and a Ribbon
with paperclip. Pens for writing intentions are available on tables. Mirrors encourage self-reflection
and bring our immediate environment into focus. Mahogany seed pods connect us to earths native
trees. Intention Ribbons channel thoughts and actions toward manifesting balance.
To foster environmental stewardship and activism, a list of local and national resources will also be
provided in each bag. At the close of each Happening participants are encouraged to display mobiles
in their home, garden, office, etc. as a reminder and prompt to act on their intentions towards creating
more balance in the environment and their life.
Happenings are beneath a square tent so they occur rain or shine, A signature of Elayna Toby's
work, dangling from the tent's edges will be approximately 100 kinetic strands embellished with
mirrors and Mahogany seed pods, thus transforming an ordinary tent into an immersive kinetic
setting. Kinetic strands will also demarcate active vs. passive spaces for participation. Active
participants are within the tent. Passive participants surround the tent as community witnesses of
collective action toward environmental and personal balance. The shared Experiences foster local
community connection.
Happenings accommodate 50 people per occurrence —two per day, Saturday and Sunday, for a total
of 200 participants. Proposed times are 11am-12pm and 2-3pm. Pre- event promotion and info
included in Kinetic weekend brochures emphasize limited seating and encourage people to arrive
early to get their chance to participate.
As Alan Kaprow said, "The line between the Happening and daily life should be kept as fluid and
perhaps indistinct, as possible."

Fragment from Eulogy for Tesla, an interactive installation fragment
Eulogy for Tesla is a biographical narrative that integrates technology with sculpture, evocative
soundscapes, theatrical sets, video projection, and stop-motion animations to create a timeless,
immersive psychological dreamscape. The trajectory of Tesla's career and contributions provides
the perfect backdrop for Jaffe's fascination with mythic twists of fate, history, and mythology as
well as a pathway for her explorations of time, life, and interpersonal journeys .
The installation for the International Kinetic Exhibition at Boynton Beach will involve a small
kinetic interactive fragment from this previously presented installation at Rowan University
Gallery in New Jersey in 2016.This installation was funded by The National Endowment for the
Arts and the Jersey State Council on the Arts, and Rowan University Gallery. Videos of the
installation have also been shown in Croatia
For the installation fragment at Boynton Beach, Phil Mease, the engineer and computer
programmer and Jeanne Jaffe the artist propose a space minimally 10 feet x 20 feet in which
three small kinetic figures of Tesla will move as the viewer approaches, along with a number of
flying pigeons, see 2,3,4,5,. Also there will be three monitors playing two videos and one stop
motion animation all three of which can be seen linked to website: jeannejaffe.net. look

Who was Nikola Tesla:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla (/'tEsla/;[21 Serbian Cyrillic: HvMKona Tecna Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [niko:la
tesla]; 10 July 1856—7 January 1943) was a Serbian-American[31[41[51 inventor, electrical
engineer, mechanical engineer, physicist, and futurist who is best known for his contributions to
the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.[61
Born and raised in the Austrian Empire,Tesla received an advanced education in engineering
and physics in the 1870s and gained practical experience in the early 1880s working in
telephony and at Continental Edison in the new electric power industry. He emigrated to the
United States in 1884, where he would become a naturalized citizen. He worked for a short time
at the Edison Machine Works in New York City before he struck out on his own. With the help of
partners to finance and market his ideas, Tesla set up laboratories and companies in New York
to develop a range of electrical and mechanical devices. His alternating current (AC) induction
motor and related polyphase AC patents, licensed by Westinghouse Electric in 1888, earned him
a considerable amount of money and became the cornerstone of the polyphase system which
that company would eventually market.
Attempting to develop inventions he could patent and market,Tesla conducted a range of
experiments with mechanical oscillators/generators, electrical discharge tubes, and early X-ray
imaging. He also built a wireless-controlled boat, one of the first ever exhibited. Tesla became
•
well known as an inventor and would demonstrate his achievements to celebrities and wealthy
patrons at his lab, and was noted for his showmanship at public lectures.
Throughout the 1890s,Tesla pursued his ideas for wireless lighting and worldwide wireless
electric power distribution in his high-voltage, high-frequency power experiments in New York
and Colorado Springs. In 1893, he made pronouncements on the possibility of wireless
communication with his devices. Tesla tried to put these ideas to practical use in his unfinished
Wardenclyffe Tower project, an intercontinental wireless communication and power transmitter,
but ran out of funding before he could complete
After Wardenclyffe,Tesla went on to try to develop a series of inventions in the 1910s and
1920s with varying degrees of success. Having spent most of his money, he lived in a series of
New York hotels, leaving behind unpaid bills. Tesla died in New York City in January 1943.181 His
work fell into relative obscurity following his death, but in 1960, the General Conference on
Weights and Measures named the SI unit of magnetic flux density the tesla in his honor.i91 There
has been a resurgence in popular interest in Tesla since the 1990s.1101

• For the past 4 years the event has been held the 3rd Sat of May
• The event planning is a collaboration between the Historical Preservation
department, Historical Society and the City's AIPP program.
• The Historical Society has contributed to the costs of the bus tour in the past.
• The $20 fee was to cover the bus cost.
1) Do you think the event topic, tour locations and overall offering was
interesting enough to encourage the public to attend?
• Not familiar with the tour
• Yes
• I wasn't aware of him and was looking forward to it.
• I'm thinking maybe more information was needed about him and his work.
• Yes
• Hard to say; it didn't personally appeal to me very much. I think perhaps it was a
better fit for the older generation here?
2) Do you think the $20.00pp cost was a value for the tour?
• No
• Yes
• If someone is excited about something, I believe they'd pay
• I HAVE THOUGHT AND SAID FROM THE BEGINNING THAT THIS PRICE TAGE WAS THE
SINGLE DETERRENT KEEPING PEOPLE FROM SIGNING UP. ESPECIALLY, IF THEY HAD
KNOWLEDGE OF IT BEING FREE IN THE PAST. THERE ARE TOO MANY THINGS TO DO AND
$20 IS A LOT FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO SPEND.
• Price was fine considering it was of interest.
3) Did you participate in marketing the event?
• Yes
• Yes
• JUST WORD OF MOUTH
• No
4) If so, how?
• email no
• shared on social media (what outlets)
• word-of-mouth: encouraged boards, membership, friends and family to attend.
Email (no) Yes to FB, friends and people at work
5) Should this event be offered in the future?
• Yes
• Not Sure
• Yes WITHOUT CHARGE
• Considering it had almost no participants, no.
6) If so what changes/suggestions would make improvements to event?
• Change the time of year to not conflict with graduations. Offer a stop for lunch.
• Not sure
• List the stops
• List what we will see
• Publish info about him
• DITTO
• See Q 5.
7) Why did you choose not to sign up for the event?
• $20
• Previous engagement
• I was unclear if the board was supposed to
• MY SCHEDULE DID NOT PERMIT
• it was at the same time as my daughter's HS graduation, but honestly, as I said
before, it didn't interest me much anyhow.

We , of course were somewhat sad that the Pickel Celebration was cancelled but we also
understand that the interest in attending lectures or visiting locations where my father's work may be
seen may have peaked a couple of celebrations ago. Janet makes great comments and I hope all will
continue but I think many of those who attended one or two of the events previously, don't feel a
need to attend again even though new stops are offered. Eventually there won't be a lot of new stops
to visit so its time to rethink. To be interested again attendees need a new experience, and see
some new life and new energy. I think the focus needs to be on artists with community ties. I hope
the Pickel name would continue and be the reason for the day but the featured artist, architect or
musician needs to be fresh. My father was most encouraging of other gifted artists especially young
up and coming artists. Maybe a stop or two could still be made where my father's work is installed
but perhaps in conjunction with the work of another artist but that all depends on how things are
structured. I also liked the event a couple of years ago when the lectures were tied in with an
exhibit at the library so people could look around as well as listen. It would be a good show place for
artists as well as a place for newspapers and other media to visit.
You asked if we had promoted the event here in Vero. We did but not a lot as people are mainly
interested in seeing his work here in this area and do not want to drive that far to Boynton. They
prefer local . Every year Redeemer Lutheran Church here in Vero offers a Stained Glass Crawl and
as many as five groups of 15 or so go from church to church to see stained glass( not just stained
glass by Pickel) They drive their own cars and no bus is needed. Something like that might work in
Boynton even as a fundraiser.
I am still very very proud that Boynton Beach has recognized the work of my father and I will help in
any way I can in the future.

Hi all. Sorry the event was cancelled.
Here is my input:
1. I think the topic and locations were interesting enough to attend. I also imagine that the general
public might not have common knowledge of what to expect at each site. For example, the
Congregational Church (first stop) used to be a bank. It was the first drive-through bank in Boynton. It
was redeveloped into a church and most people might "drive right by" without knowing that Conrad
Pickel fashioned amazing artwork into the building redesign. The West Palm Beach Church includes
one of the most magnificent and colorful examples of stained glass in the country, truly breathtaking,
but the public would not generally understand from the name of the church that it was once another
church, and how extensive and intricate the undertaking was. We have newspaper articles attesting
to its splendor, etc.
2. $20 is an extremely good value for a bus tour with art & history and narration from experts. The
timeline is a little long for some people, perhaps mentioning a box lunch or something because
people might become tired, hungry and thirsty in the span of five plus hours. Also, while Eventbrite is
an excellent platform, some people are unfamiliar with the interface and how sales and ticketing work.
3. Yes
4. I participated in marketing the event via word of mouth, email and Facebook postings to the
Historic Boynton Beach, Palm Beaches Remembered, and Boynton Beach Raw pages. I did not see
that it appeared in The Historian, newsletter of the Boynton Beach Historical Society.
5. The event should be offered in the future. Perhaps it needs a "target market." I'm not sure that the
average citizen can possibly understand the importance of Conrad Picket to art, history and
community. Too many people are self-centered and their thoughts don't extend beyond their inner
circle of friends and sitting back to be entertained. Perhaps a bus tour with unloading and loading
sounded cumbersome? Perhaps there were commencement ceremonies and graduation parties, golf
tourneys and royal weddings competing with their attention?
6. Improvements for the future might include a series of short, 60-second videos from the presenters
onsite sharing a "sneak-peek" of what to expect, the beauty, the culture, the opulence, the mystery...
Integrating refreshments into the mix would alleviate fear of missing breakfast and lunch. Target
marketing might draw a larger, more enthusiastic crowd.
When Ginger and I conduct cemetery tours the City of West Palm Beach has to limit the number to 50
guests. There is almost always a waiting list. We tour for 90-minutes because anything longer is
strenuous for the average citizen and they start to need refreshments and bathroom facilities.
Thank you for all you do.

I was sorry to hear that this event had to be cancelled. It should definitely be held again in the future.
I don't believe that the event details were solidified far enough in advance.
The Boynton Beach Historical Society's Board doesn't meet that often. Our April meeting occurred
prior to the release of your announcement and the May Board meeting hasn't happened yet. We'd
been prepared to provide funds as we did last year (for the bus drivers). The Board hasn't even had
the opportunity to discuss the details of this year's event.
Unfortunately the official announcement arrived too late to be included in the May publication of our
newsletter, The Historian. We'd be pleased to include the event in future issues of The Historian — is
it possible to get the information to us no later than early February for March and subsequent issues?
Randall and I did announce the event, in general terms, at Society program meetings in March, April
and May pointing people to the City Website to obtain further information. I also marketed the event in
Nextdoor which covers a large area in West Boynton and in Facebook and talked it up to friends.
We can distribute flyers at program meetings. I can put you on the schedule for next season to do a
presentation about the event too!
I hope next events take place in the old Boynton High and include demos and lectures as in previous
years.
Good luck.
Regards,
Anne Rimier, Program for Historical Society
I'm sorry the Conrad Pickel event was cancelled. Hopefully in the future I will be able to help you with
an event. Randall President of the Historical Society
1) I thought it was interesting.
2) Perhaps make it $15 pp. However, I think $20 pp was a good value.
3 & 4) Yes, we e-blasted it out to over list of 3,500 addresses. We only did that 2 weeks before the
event. We don't like to e-blast to our list too often. People tend to unsubscribe it you send too many
emails.
5) If you do offer it I think it should be held during the season. You may attract more people.
6) I never saw any advertising from the City of Boynton Beach about this event. Even folks I know
who live in Boynton Beach and were looking for advertising about the event couldn't find it. Perhaps
you need to put some sort of paid advertising in your budget. It would attract tourists and benefit the
Boynton Beach community so it shouldn't be too hard to add to the budget for the coming year. It's a
very interesting event but you need more advertising.
