V. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS FROM THE BOARD
Chair Weiss announced she attended her book club and distributed save-the-date cards
and flyers to ask for volunteers for the Kinetic Event and not all knew about it. She hoped
they would attend the Kinetic Art and Symposium weekend and hoped some would
volunteer.
Ms. Levine advised she has been distributing the cards. She works at the Cornell
Museum in Delray and she placed the cards in the informational section upcoming events
in the surrounding areas and about art activities. She also pointed out they have bags
they give to patrons and guests when they donate and the cards are in the bag, so the
event is being circulated in Delray Beach. She was talking up the kinetic event.
Chair Weiss mentioned posting and sharing social media for the kinetic event is helpful.
She posted the kinetic event on Boynton Raw, which she does not normally do, and the
event got good views and the online engagement was great. She is noticing more people
are sharing and fellow Board Member Lauren Huff also shared something today on social
media. She hoped all those on social media would continue to advertise the event and
keep it going until the event is held including Facebook and Twitter. Ms. Coles-Dobay
noted there is hashtag information on the save-the-date cards. Ms. Zell announced she
attended the Pirate Fest and she enjoyed people playing with the sculptures. She also
announced the garden is nearly ready at Poinciana Elementary School and they want to
install a great art element. It will be a full children's garden and an organic vegetable also
with a play area. She asked for help to create an art installation that children could work
with or create.
The Amanda James Gallery had been distributing the event handouts all the time. They
did well during the Pirates Fest. Ms. James and Mr. Knill were talking up the event and
the public was receiving the information well.

All agreed they had a great time and Ms. Levine loved the bags they distributed to the
volunteers. Chair Weiss thought it was wonderful the City honored their board volunteers.
The City also posted on the website if they knew anyone who was a super hero. Ms.

Coles-Dobay commented they were getting good coverage in the Sun Sentinel about the
installations so far.
C. Fri., Nov. 15, 5:30 - 7:30 Sister City Faridola fundraiser
Ms. Oyer noted Boynton each would get another Sister City. The City currently has a
Sister City in China, one in Finland and one in Haiti. The Sister City in China was
downplayed as no one has visited it in 20 years. The Sister City in Haiti is shifting into a
different format. Ms. Oyer announced there is an educator program and if the members
knew of any teachers, they tour the schools in Finland. The City was picking up a Sister
City called Faridola. She advised this was the beginning of the process and it will not be
complete until the City Commission approves it. The flyer was to introduce Faridola to
Boynton citizens and allow the public to figure out where it is. The cost of the fundraiser
was $25, which offered wine, cheese food and paintings for sale. The website has
pictures of the paintings by artists Ralph Papa and Paul Kritchly and they have donated
pictures of Boynton Beach and Faridola. It is a good opportunity to get famous art at a
reasonable price. It was noted Mr. Papa has been painting for years and is very
integrated in Boynton Beach. He was present at the Pirate Fest and he painted
Cavalcade. He does Plein Air and other types of art. Mr. Papa also had artwork posted
on the Sister Cities website. There is a way to auction art online.
D. Nov. 17, BBAD Art Walk ceremony for"When Are You Coming to Visit?"
Chair Weiss announced the above event for the decomposing sculpture. The artwork,
entitled "When are you Coming to Visit?" was donated by Artist Melissa Markowitz and
installed in 2010. The piece is to raise awareness of the elderly because they have so
much to give. The piece decays and cracks over time as it is ceramic. Ms. Coles-Dobay
noted people bring her things all the time. They brought her a bag of goodies, and the
last time Ms. Coles-Dobay was there, there was a soda can in her hand. When they
decided to look at the Town Square art pieces, the decision was made to decommission
the piece. Instead of it being demolished she will be crated to the Art Walk. The artist
will have an event, talk about the piece and the decommissioning process. A correction
was noted: the Art Walk was on November 16th and not the 17th from 6 to 9 p.m. Ms.
Coles-Dobay did not know the exact time.
Ms. Zell noted the Flyer for the Faridola Fundraiser indicated the event was from 5:39 to
7:32 p.m. Ms. Oyer noted it was intentionally done that way to attract attention.

Meeting Minutes
Arts Commission
Boynton Beach, Florida November 8, 2018
INHIMENREMM
Ms. Coles-Dobay explained 54 artworks were received from the call to artists. Ms. Coles-
Dobay suggested reviewing the diversity of the pieces. For the most part, all of the works
can be accepted, but the Arts Commission has to approve the pieces. There may be a
few more coming in. Ms. Coles-Dobay noted there are several high-end kinetic art
galleries interested in bringing art to the event and all of the pieces will be on loan. Many
artists will be available to talk about their pieces, which will be for sale and the Arts
Commission would receive a 30% Commission on the pieces sold. Part of the volunteer
group will help install the art and some artists will be available to install their own art, but
many artists ship their pieces.
The pieces on the handout were reviewed. The members also viewed videos of many of
the pieces.
(Mr. McQuire and Ms. Moodie arrived at 6:27 p.m.)
Ms. Coles-Dobay advised they will have one kinetic pole installed for the Symposium to
gauge how people interact with it and to obtain feedback from attendees on what sound
is desired.
Ms. Moodie asked if the City was paying other exhibitors to attend and if not, why would
the City pay Urban Conga. Ms. Coles-Dobay responded the City could pursue
sponsorships, but the City is not giving other artists compensation. Urban Conga wanted
$15,000 or $10,000 to attend. Ms. Zell said sometimes people do not have to give their
work for free. Chair Weiss agreed and thought there was equal talent in many of the
pieces they just saw. They are entertaining it for the Town Square and she hoped they
could get Urban Conga for the Schoolhouse Children's Museum. It would be unfair to
pay one exhibitor. Ms. Coles-Dobay commented it is not always fair, but if you want an
artist that has exceptional work to draw people, it could be considered. There are some
artists who are compensated more than others. They get the bigger draw and they have
more spectacular artwork. It is not always a level playing field. Indoor works are not being
given any compensation. Discussion followed the Board could accept all the pieces or
exclude some. A motion to entertain accepting the art for the indoor art exhibition was
needed.
Motion
Vice Chair Lorenz so moved.
Ms. Oyer thought Urban Conga was an exceptional piece, but sponsorships were needed
and she thought each developer could contribute funds. She suggested contacting
McDonalds and a local dermatologist who appreciates art and has their name on the
sponsor list. It would also give recognition to the developers.

Mr. McQuire was unsure Urban Conga qualified as kinetic art. He asked if it was the
Board's objective to make it intimate with select artists or have as many as possible. He
thought an intimate event was predominately an adult event. The Kinetic event is friendly
to all ages and art conesoirres and families interact. The artists who attend are there to
talk about their work and sell it. There are docents who also speak about the art at the
event. Some artists ship their art overseas and the Arts Commission ensures the work is
handled correctly. The City was looking for a well-rounded event. The art can be both
low to high end. Art is made with various types of materials and that is why some pieces
are mixed media. Others incorporate light or need human interaction. There are some
that are mechanical. It was important to have diverse work.
Mr. McQuire did not think Urban Conga was kinetic, but it would attract youth. It was an
interactive piece, but he questioned how kinetic it was. He also thought the magnetic
boards was not really kinetic: just a fun art piece.
Ms. Moodie also felt the same way towards the Venezualian artist. Ms. Coles-Dobay
explained opt art is kinetic. Ms. Zell thought the tiles do qualify as kinetic art as it is put
into motion by human hands. Ms. Oyer did not like the piece by Linda Stephenson that
looked like a person. She thought it would be too scary for young children.
Ms. Levine commented they did not have a discussion about Ms. Oyer's opinion.
Ms. Levine left the meeting at 7-14 p.m.
Mr. McQuire noted the Stephenson piece was one piece. He agreed with Ms. Zell, but
thought it should remain in the collection as it would be a good creepy piece. Ms. Zell
thought it was interesting. Vice Chair Lorenz thought it was weird, but there were other
pieces they had in previous shows that were weird that sold.
Ms. Levine returned to the meeting at 7:26 p.m. Ms. Levine thought the music was
strange. She thought the piece was great, but it was odd.
Motion
Ms. Moodie moved to accept all the exhibits being offered for free. Ms. Zell seconded
the motion that unanimously passed.
Ms. Zell moved if they can get a sponsorship to pay the $10,000, for Urban Conga to
exhibit at the symposium. Vice Chair Lorenz seconded the motion.
Ms. Oyer thought it was easy to approach the developer and there is a long list of people
who want to be part of the Town Square.

The motion passed 4-1 (Ms. Moodie dissenting.) Ms. Moodie commented all the exhibits
at the Symposium are for free, and she did not favor giving anyone money.
B. Boards Volunteer Committee selection
Chair Weiss explained this item was for the members to ask people to volunteer for the
kinetic event. Ms. Coles-Dobay further explained the event has a great volunteer network.
The document handed out has categories, which Ms. Coles-Dobay reviewed. She
commented there was a need for docents to assist with year-long exhibits of the 12
outdoor pieces on the Avenue of the Arts. The Arts Commission will provide training and
docents will be available to hold tours all year during the week or weekend and also for
the weekend event.
At the Chair's request, Vice Chair Lorenz took over the meeting for Chair Weiss. Ms.
Coles-Dobay wanted Ms. Zell to be the volunteer coordinator to oversee the volunteers
and coordinate them as there are different areas of volunteer groups. Ms. Oyer felt there
were not enough walkie-talkies at the last event. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained Ms. Zell
would oversee volunteers handling public relations, the docents, indoor outdoor
volunteers, artist and sponsor guidance volunteers and someone to oversee the displays.
Ms. Coles-Dobay explained when the special events team meets, they will have that more
covered. Rick Beau Lieu was the point person for sales when the artist was not present.
They had a list of cell phone numbers.
Ms. James was happy to offer anything the Arts Commission needed and noted they have
a little pop up tent if the Arts Commission needed a table. They no longer have a kinetic
artist at the gallery.
Mr. McQuire volunteered to oversee the indoor docents. Ms. Moodie agreed to assist
him.
Mr. McQuire will oversee the outdoor docents with Ms. Zell.
Ms. Levine will oversee the artist and sponsors.
Vice Chair Lorenz agreed to oversee the technological displays.
Ms. Oyer will oversee the retail booth and advised she could start about 2 p.m. on
Saturday as she had a prior commitment.
Chair Weiss thought she and Ms. Huff should oversee the reception. Volunteers will
receive an official tee shirt.
Ms. Moodie suggested involving the Education and Youth Advisory Board as there is an
educational piece and they have access to youth. She thought it would be a great

component for youth to see how kinetic art works. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained getting
the word out to the schools is important. Ms. Moodie noted many youth are within walking
distance to the site. She is in awe of the exhibit and used to be a STEM Coordinator and
thought it was a great opportunity for kids. It was suggested Ms. Coles-Dobay contact
the other Board Liaisons with save-the-date cards. Ms. Zell requested 500 cards to insert
into the Poinciana Elementary School students.
Mr. cQuire inquired what efforts were being made to market the event on social media.
Ms. Coles-Dobay explained she had an advertising schedule she can share with him. Ms.
Zell walked around her neighborhood and distributed cards, and learned they have to be
inserted into the doors.
C. Kinetic Merchandise presentation
Ms. Coles-Dobay explained the presentation was put together by Susan Oyer and
someone from the City was ordering items and putting this program together. Ms. Oyer
will sit at the table and sell them so the cost would not come from the Arts Commission
budget. This is the first year they are selling the following items as a trial:
• Dri-fit shirts with logo
• Organic t-shirts with logo
• Tote bags
• Reusable cups
• Assorted kinetic items for children of all ages.
They will try to have merchandise items and no leftovers. There will be memorabilia and
Ms. Coles-Dobay suggested concentrating on five items.
Dri-fit Tee shirts cost range from $14 - $30 and could sell for 30 to 35. It was noted event
logo had black in the past. Shirts could be ordered and delivered in under two weeks.
Stainless reusable bottles that were customizable was the next item. Ms. Oyer had a
sample, noting the bottles come in a nice box and are bubble wrapped.
The tote bags are $2.90. They had tote bags in the past.
Newton's Cradle was a revolving ball. The event logo would be on the side.
There are mood balls which change colors, Dancing Solar Flowers which was a prior
activity, pinwheels, a flying discus, or stadium cups or tumblers.
Ms. Oyer noted people would be outside a lot. She thought using Dri-Fit for the volunteers.
Ms. Coles-Dobay explained the Arts Commission would not get into the details of the

order, only they want the program and the Arts Commission wants these types of items
to focus on to make the event fun.
Ms. Zell noted organic clothing was expensive. If it was a lot more money, she would not
support it. Ms. Oyer explained it was $2 or $3 difference. Attendance is about three to
five thousand people. A merchandise plan was a good idea. Ms. Coles-Dobay did not
know how much revenue would be raised. Ms. Coles-Dobay thought if they break even,
they would be happy. The event is not a money maker. The purpose is to bring home
memorabilia if they did not buy a sculpture. If they cannot sustain this by having
sculptures sold, artists will not want to participate or have the level of artists participating.
The focus is to get artwork sold as the Arts Commission will receive a commission on
each piece sold
Motion
Ms. Moodie moved to go ahead and implement the merchandising program on a limited
basis. Ms. Zell and Ms. Levine seconded the motion that unanimously passed.
IX New Business
Town Square public art projects
New Fire Station Public Art Criteria and Call to Local Emerging Artists
Ms. Coles-Dobay distributed a document. She asked if there were any questions or
comments. Ms. Coles-Dobay clarified the description of the door space and noted a
correction in the Call to Artists. No other comments received. Vice Chair Lorenz asked
for a motion to approve the new Fire Station Public Art criteria and Call to Local Emerging
Artists.
Motion
Ms. Levine so moved. Ms. Moodie seconded the motion that unanimously passed.
Mr. McQuire requested a brief summary of the program and learned it is part of the
emerging public arts program to train artists who are not public artists. The project is the
fire station and they identified the windows on the fire station for public art. The artist
does not have to be a seasoned public artist. They could use emerging artists and they
would have to develop a conceptual idea. Applicants have to apply to the call and write
the caption. To-date, 17 artists have already applied and the program provides an
opportunity for them to go through the public art process. They have their background
and qualifications and they would do research and give them something in writing to
submit to the Arts Commission. There were three questions.
They specify what it is, which was a visual or graphic. And the Arts Commission will have
a company do the film and they will not have to lay out the cost.
