PROJECT UPDATES/APPROVALS A.NONE VIII.INTL KINETIC ART EXHIBIT AND SYMPOSIUM REVIEW A.Outdoor Kinetic Exhibit promotion and tours continue 2 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida March 14, 2019 Ms. Coles-Dobay reported the Augmented Reality tour helps promote the outdoor exhibit and other artists are promoting their kinetic art as well. The Arts Commission is taking videos of local artists, and will post information about the Beju Dudali piece. Ms. Coles- Dobay noted a resident from Casa Costa loved the Beju piece so much; he wanted his community to purchase it as a permanent exhibit. A video will be made featuring Tom Brewitz talking about his piece called Birds, in the gazebo. Mayor Grant also agreed to participate in a video vignette for the Avenue in April. Ms. Coles-Dobay noted the exhibit is through October. Mr. Goradesky conducted his artwork promotion on Valentine's Day and it was successful. He also promotes Boynton Beach kinetic outdoor art elsewhere. The exhibits are receiving greater exposure from visitors touring with the Museum of Lifestyle and Fashion History. Hopefully, some of the art will sell. Ms. Coles-Dobay noted some of the media is still in circulation. The interview video aired on PBS Art Loft. It was a great piece and they will take some segments and add them to Around Town. The Palm Beach County Film Commission will continue supporting the kinetic outdoor art exhibit in a future promotion for Discover the Palm Beaches. IX NEW BUSINESS A.AIPP program promotion Chair McQuire commented he had thought about the Arts Commission being present at the Boynton Beach Art Walks to represent the Art in Public Places program. His thought was to have a simple set-up where one or two Arts Commission member(s) would volunteer or have a representative at the event to communicate the program to attendees. They could hand out materials and talk about the program artists. An outline of the Boynton Arts program was distributed. If there were two representatives from the Arts Commission, one could talk about social channels and the other convey information about the art contained in the brochure. Chair McQuire commented it was revelation attendees at the Palm Beach Art show and Kinetic Art Event wanted that information. He thought the Arts Commission could get the word out together and further the cause of the Arts Commission. Vice Chair Levine thought, it was a great idea, and she supported talking about the downtown development. She noted that since the CRA got involved in the Art Walks, they seem to have been busier. There are more food trucks and there are three and four times more people. She volunteered to staff a booth, but not on the first date. The two dates on the calendar for this season's Art Walks were May 18th and June 15th. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained they do not have Art Walks during the summer, but it is a good time to test the effort to see how it works. From there, they can evaluate it for when the Art Walks start up again. 3 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida March 14, 2019 Chair McQuire thought the Arts Commission would need a table, skirt, brochures and marketing materials and a banner, which were all available. The Arts Commission could give out water or attendees could buy bags from the kinetic art show. The Arts Commission could also invite an artist, such as Mr. Goradesky or Mr. Brewitz, or a fabricator or artist from Ocean Avenue to be present. Chair McQuire had loaded the materials from the Kinetic Art Exhibit to the warehouse so the materials are probably already there. Mr. Silverio thought it was a good idea. If the Arts Commission does not spread the word, people will not know about it. It is an off year for the kinetic event, but they will rotate out the art and it will keep the Arts Commission in the public eye. The Butterfly and Cavalcade pieces are still there. Chair McQuire looked at the location map for the public art pieces and was surprised how much art there was. The upcoming public art project at the Woolbright and Federal Highway project site could also be shared. Ms. Moodie advised she would be in Orlando on May 18th so she could not volunteer. Ms. Coles-Dobay commented the Arts Commission has many volunteers that were part of kinetic event. It was important the members take shifts since they are more of the experts about the program. Motion Vice Chair Levine moved to establish the AIPP promotion to start May 18th at the Boynton Beach Arts District. Ms. Lorenz seconded the motion that unanimously passed. Chair McQuire asked about a hashtag name for the program and there was agreement this item would be on the next agenda. Ms. Coles-Dobay will also contact Rolando to see if they can get a booth. X. UNFINISHED BUSINESS B.NONE X11. FUTURE BUSINESS • April 11 - Old High School/Kapok Tree Courtyard and Gardens concept presentation Ms. Coles-Dobay briefly explained this was part of the Town Square and they will create space with native and natural environments. The courtyard at the high school will be used for weddings and outdoor space. • April 11 - RFQ for Emerging Local Artists south parking garage project 4 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida March 14, 2019 • April 11 - 2019-2020 Avenue of the Art program Ms. Coles-Dobay explained the Arts Commission has to decide what type of art they are looking for. In the past, calls to artists were for art that speaks to environmental issues, the coastal community, and others besides kinetic art. Last year, the art was all Albert Paley. A short dialogue ensued this will be on the next meeting agenda. Ms. Coles-Dobay asked the members for suggestions and ideas and explained the art goes through the same process. The Arts Commission can do a call to artist or call an artist and invite them to exhibit. She noted the Arts Commission hires art installers to assist with installing the artworks. The call to artists involves providing a stipend depending on the level of the artist and they help with shipping and installation. The Avenue of the Arts program includes coordinating the artwork to arrive at one specific time so an opening reception could be planned when the artists are in town. Ms. Moodie inquired about the art on Ocean Avenue and learned siting art is still a challenge. They will start at Ocean Avenue at 1 st and continue down to the other locations. There was discussion the Avenue does not have a site on private property, however, Ms. Coles-Dobay can pursue private landholders for permission. The piece by the water may or may not remain in next year's Avenue of the Arts. A permanent piece can be included with the Avenue such as the two kinetics in the roundabout by Boynton Harbor Marina. They do not have to keep the art on that site. The current Avenue of the Arts kinetic sites 1-12 created a walkable loop, but the members could look at other sites, depending on what they want to do and how much art is submitted. Ms. Coles-Dobay is always looking for additional sites on City property. Ms. Moodie asked if the solar speaker(Sun Boxes) was on private property and learned it was. Chair McQuire thought they could create a garden, but it needs one more piece. Ms. Coles-Dobay could contact the private developer to look into continuing the site and possibly adding another site to the Ocean One property for the next Avenue of the Arts program. • May 2 - Finalist Emerging Local Artists proposals for Fire Rescue project The two shortlisted artists will come back and present project concepts. The Arts Commission will then choose one. • May 2 - Finalist Emerging Local Artists proposals for south parking garage project The developer will work with artist and the concept will come before the Arts Commission for approval • TBD - The Club, assisted living project, "Essence" public art final review 5 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida March 14, 2019 The developer will come back for final approval.
