Arts Commission
Boynton e cFloridas , 2019
Chair McQuire announced he had a wonderful private tour with family members at the
Cornell Museum of Art given by Vice Chair Levine as she works there. Seven Solos was
on exhibit. It was an awesome exhibit. People from all over the world visited to see the
Museum. He highly recommended all see the exhibit.
Ms. Moodie noted the Sankofa for the Record exhibit at the Spady Museum. There was
other works contributed by other artists that were displayed and a panelist of artists held
discussions, which Ms. Moodie was able to serve as moderator.
Ms. Oyer announced the City approved a new Sister City in Farindola in Italy. The town
has a population of 500 individuals, and they host an international art event, which drew
twelve thousand people in three days. She believed Farindola would be a very active
Sister City through selling Italian products and mutually participating in each city's art
events.
Vice Chair Levine attends different art walks in the area. Delray Beach art walks are very
different from the Avenue of the Arts, as it is very commercial, where Fat Village in Ft.
Lauderdale is built up having a great deal of artists and food trucks. It appeared to be the
gold standard of Art Walks. Art Walks in Hollywood reminded her of street festivals in New
York that have a lot of vendors, but not a lot of art. She went to Hudson Yards in New
York and commented it was an amazing mall with amazing architecture. It is a public
mall and the shops selected to sell in the mall are unique.
VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS/REPORTS
A. July 12, 9:30 - 11 am, Water, You & I Art Camp tour
Chair McQuire presented the item. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained the piece is a public art
feature for the new ion exchange plant at the East Water Treatment Plant, (EWTP.) It
was a public art feature to educate the public where water comes from. It is an
educational, outdoor classroom students could visit. The piece shows the layers of soil
the water percolates through to reach the aquifer. The soil acts as a natural filter on its
way to the aquifer, which is then pumped to the EWTP. The ion exchange treats and
cleanses the water. A spigot is in the middle of the piece offering potable water to visitors,
symbolic of tap water available in each residence.
B. Tues., July 23 and 30, 10 - 11:30 am Kapok Park community sessions
Chair McQuire noted there were sessions held, which he and some of the Arts
Commission members attended. He thought the sessions were good. It brought people
of all ages together creating anything from poetry to artwork. A lot of good creations were
made. Ms. Moodie was the first person to stand and present the work from her table.
The following sessions were held the same way. Ms. Moodie advised all enjoyed the
session, and she was please youth were involved with the project. The project was about
the Town Square, and it helped spread the word about the project and it evoked good

feelings for youth involved in the process. Mr. SlIverio explained the purpose of the
sessions, it McQuire and Ms. Oyer of agreed beautiful pieces were made. The

imagery and create information. Another larger creative community session will meet and
collectively decide what essence of what is created should be placed or etched into the
pathways at Kapok Park.
C. August 13, 7 prn movie screening of"The Peanut Butter Falcon", Cinemark

who is a Boynton Beach actor with Down's Syndrome. He went to a camp and was
selected by directors and producers to work with the Shia LaBeouf the star int movie
as well as other named actors. The movie was a Mark Twain styled adventure story. The
movie is from the city's community, is supports the arts. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained
all were invited tote VIP Screening the next week at 7 p.m. After the screening, there
will be an interview and a question and answer session with Zachary and the writers and
directors. Chair McQuire will present a Citation on behalf of the Mayor. Afterwards, Zack

IX. NEW BUSINESS
A. AIPP booth and Board attend Sept. 21, 6-9pm BBAD Summer Bash
Chair McQuire explained the Boynton Beach Art Walk Summer Bash was being planned
for September. It was unclear what it was about. The Board should discuss whether to
continue attending as they had in the past, having a booth and distributing information
about what is occurring.
Ms. Coles-Dobay showed the published information on the Boynton Beach Arts District
(BBAD), listing the dates the Art Walks would be held. The Art Walk was supposed to
start in January and end in June, but they are starting September 21st, the third Saturday

of each month from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with two extra months of events. Ms. Coles-Dobay
reviewed Golden would be featured in October 2019 and KeroWACKED in April 2020.
Ms. Coles-Dobay also enclosed information when the Arts Commission was discussing
having a booth at the Art Walks representing the AIPP. She applied one of the pieces to
feature as the members wanted to feature and artwork or aspect of what the Arts
Commission accomplishes. She had contacted some of the artists to be present and
engage the public that comes to the booth and to talk about how they are contributing to
the Times Square. The first item was the Kapok project. All on the list were
recommendations. Saturday, the 19th, Amanda Johnson could discuss the Deep Ocean
and Shore Reef parking garage Town Square project. There is also an opportunity to
show an environmental movie and invite the Reef Institute, talk about the Arts
Commission markers and the local fishing community Ms. Johnson reached out too.
November 16th, the Arts Commission can promote the Avenue of the Arts with a new
brochure. She suggested some items because she thought tentatively, they could work.
January 18th is the In Culture Season Kickoff. Artist Ralfonso will be in town. Eric Small
of EES Design would also attend. They may have a mock-up of kinetic art or even posters
so visually, the Arts Commission can promote the work. The Ball of Winds is February
18th. The Fire Station Community Heartbeat would also be showcased. Synersthia fit
with KeroWACKED Multimedia Fest as it is an interactive public art.
Ms. Coles-Dobay noted there is discussion the CRA may assist with the January Art Walk.
The event was advertised on the Boynton Beach Arts District website and on Facebook.
There is a large sign on Boynton Beach Boulevard. The CRA is supporting some of the
Art Walk dates. The intent was to help support the January 18th Art Walk, and she did
not know if the assistance would extend beyond January. It will be discussed at the next
CRA meeting.
Vice Chair Levine noted the Let Love Guide Your Way is now a multi-media travelling
show. He was looking to do something around Valentine's Day, if the Board deemed it
appropriate to have at the Art Walk. He has kinetic and hearts, cut outs and many items.
Chair McQuire noted the Arts Commission had one tent at the Art Walk. The public
engaged with the Arts Commission although no art was sold. He commented there could
be more than one artist, or the artists could have a booth next to the Arts Commission.
Ms. Oyer supported giving artists additional exposure. Chair McQuire thought if the Arts
Commission was showcasing and artists, the Arts Commission should pay for the booth.
Discussion followed the Arts Commission is not charged, and in the past, Artists Tom
Brewitz and Lloyd Goradesky were part of the AIPP booth. Chair McQuire thought the
information was a good guide, which could be changed.
Ms. Oyer was concerned about lack of parking and the vendors not arriving early enough.
The public started attending and the vendors could not park and unload their materials.
She suggested a shuttle be used, or advertise where to park. She thought signs for vendor
parking may be appropriate. Ms. Coles-Dobay pointed out the Walks are private events.
Ms. Oyer thought parking and other logistics should be discussed with Rolando as
attendance was outgrowing the event. There was consensus the Arts Commission

should continue to be involved with the Art Walks. Chair McQuire commented he would
speak to Rolando about parking. Ms. Moodie's concern was how frivolo would the
Arts Commission be in the project. They are participating in it, but working out the details
was a different issue. Ms. Coles-Dobay reiterated the event is held on private property.
Parking is not the responsibility of the Arts Commission. it McQuire suggested putting
the September Art Walk on the next agenda.
Motion
Ms. Oyer moved to approve the AIPP Art Booth at the September 21st at the Boynton
Beach Arts District. Ms. Weiss seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed.
Some
oft members volunteered to attend the event.
Chair McQuire suggested the members reach out to friends and family to help out at the
event from 6 to 9 p.m.
B. Board Chair, Courtlandt McGuire participate in City Hall/Library Lobby art
selection panel
Ms. Coles-Dobay explained there is public art in storage. While reviewing the new City
Hall, it was noted the Library Lobby has a large area and the art the City has is small.
The

and artists to look at, and the Arts Commission wanted to engage emerging artists and a
Board Representative was needed. This would be for permanent art and not rotating. The
art will be 8' by 12' canvas. Rotating exhibits will occur int Old High School Cultural
