Minutes 08-08-19 MINUTES OF THE ARTS COMMISSION MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 20197 FROM 6:30 P.M. TO 8:30 P.M. AT FIRE STATION NO. 2, TRAINING ROOM 2615 W. WOOLBRIGHT ROAD, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA PRESENT: Courtlandt McQuire, it Debby Coles-Dobay, Public Art Manager Marcia Levine, Vice Chair Gina Burg, Public Art Assistant Saddam Silverio Clovis Moodie Robyn Lorenz Susan Oyer Jehana Zell Kim Weiss ABSENT: Bryan Pascual 1. CALL TO ORDER Chair McQuire called the meeting to order atp.m. 111. ROLL CALL OF MEMBERS Self-introductions were made. 111111. AGENDA APPROVAL Motion Ms. Weiss moved to approve the agenda. Ms. Oyer seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed. IV. APPROVE MEETING MINUTES A. July 11, 2019 The minutes were not available. V. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS FROM THE BOARD Meeting i s Arts Commission Boynton e cFloridas , 2019 Chair McQuire announced he had a wonderful private tour with family members at the Cornell Museum of Art given by Vice Chair Levine as she works there. Seven Solos was on exhibit. It was an awesome exhibit. People from all over the world visited to see the Museum. He highly recommended all see the exhibit. Ms. Moodie noted the Sankofa for the Record exhibit at the Spady Museum. There was other works contributed by other artists that were displayed and a panelist of artists held discussions, which Ms. Moodie was able to serve as moderator. Ms. Oyer announced the City approved a new Sister City in Farindola in Italy. The town has a population of 500 individuals, and they host an international art event, which drew twelve thousand people in three days. She believed Farindola would be a very active Sister City through selling Italian products and mutually participating in each city's art events. Vice Chair Levine attends different art walks in the area. Delray Beach art walks are very different from the Avenue of the Arts, as it is very commercial, where Fat Village in Ft. Lauderdale is built up having a great deal of artists and food trucks. It appeared to be the gold standard of Art Walks. Art Walks in Hollywood reminded her of street festivals in New York that have a lot of vendors, but not a lot of art. She went to Hudson Yards in New York and commented it was an amazing mall with amazing architecture. It is a public mall and the shops selected to sell in the mall are unique. VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS/REPORTS A. July 12, 9:30 - 11 am, Water, You & I Art Camp tour Chair McQuire presented the item. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained the piece is a public art feature for the new ion exchange plant at the East Water Treatment Plant, (EWTP.) It was a public art feature to educate the public where water comes from. It is an educational, outdoor classroom students could visit. The piece shows the layers of soil the water percolates through to reach the aquifer. The soil acts as a natural filter on its way to the aquifer, which is then pumped to the EWTP. The ion exchange treats and cleanses the water. A spigot is in the middle of the piece offering potable water to visitors, symbolic of tap water available in each residence. B. Tues., July 23 and 30, 10 - 11:30 am Kapok Park community sessions Chair McQuire noted there were sessions held, which he and some of the Arts Commission members attended. He thought the sessions were good. It brought people of all ages together creating anything from poetry to artwork. A lot of good creations were made. Ms. Moodie was the first person to stand and present the work from her table. The following sessions were held the same way. Ms. Moodie advised all enjoyed the session, and she was please youth were involved with the project. The project was about the Town Square, and it helped spread the word about the project and it evoked good Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton each, Florida August 8, 2019 feelings for youth involved in the process. Mr. SlIverio explained the purpose of the sessions, it McQuire and Ms. Oyer of agreed beautiful pieces were made. The pieces are collected and Artist Lucy Keshavarz will consider the words, phrases or imagery and create information. Another larger creative community session will meet and collectively decide what essence of what is created should be placed or etched into the pathways at Kapok Park. C. August 13, 7 prn movie screening of"The Peanut Butter Falcon", Cinemark Boynton Chair McQuire noted this movie involves a young man, Zak, (Played by Zack Gottsagen), who is a Boynton Beach actor with Down's Syndrome. He went to a camp and was selected by directors and producers to work with the Shia LaBeouf the star int movie as well as other named actors. The movie was a Mark Twain styled adventure story. The movie is from the city's community, is supports the arts. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained all were invited tote VIP Screening the next week at 7 p.m. After the screening, there will be an interview and a question and answer session with Zachary and the writers and directors. Chair McQuire will present a Citation on behalf of the Mayor. Afterwards, Zack will sign posters. The film will be released tote public ante 23rd. Vill. PROJECT UPDATES/APPROVALS A. Art in Public Places website update w/Town Square Chair McQuire hoped the members explored the website changes and upgrades. At the I ast meeting, Ms. Coles-Dobay indicated she would send the information tote members. The members viewed the changes. She thanked the board members who contributed and made comments. Vill. INTL KINETIC ART EXHIBIT AND SYMPOSIUM REVIEW A. NONE IX. NEW BUSINESS A. AIPP booth and Board attend Sept. 21, 6-9pm BBAD Summer Bash Chair McQuire explained the Boynton Beach Art Walk Summer Bash was being planned for September. It was unclear what it was about. The Board should discuss whether to continue attending as they had in the past, having a booth and distributing information about what is occurring. Ms. Coles-Dobay showed the published information on the Boynton Beach Arts District (BBAD), listing the dates the Art Walks would be held. The Art Walk was supposed to start in January and end in June, but they are starting September 21st, the third Saturday 3 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida August 8, 2019 of each month from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with two extra months of events. Ms. Coles-Dobay reviewed Golden would be featured in October 2019 and KeroWACKED in April 2020. Ms. Coles-Dobay also enclosed information when the Arts Commission was discussing having a booth at the Art Walks representing the AIPP. She applied one of the pieces to feature as the members wanted to feature and artwork or aspect of what the Arts Commission accomplishes. She had contacted some of the artists to be present and engage the public that comes to the booth and to talk about how they are contributing to the Times Square. The first item was the Kapok project. All on the list were recommendations. Saturday, the 19th, Amanda Johnson could discuss the Deep Ocean and Shore Reef parking garage Town Square project. There is also an opportunity to show an environmental movie and invite the Reef Institute, talk about the Arts Commission markers and the local fishing community Ms. Johnson reached out too. November 16th, the Arts Commission can promote the Avenue of the Arts with a new brochure. She suggested some items because she thought tentatively, they could work. January 18th is the In Culture Season Kickoff. Artist Ralfonso will be in town. Eric Small of EES Design would also attend. They may have a mock-up of kinetic art or even posters so visually, the Arts Commission can promote the work. The Ball of Winds is February 18th. The Fire Station Community Heartbeat would also be showcased. Synersthia fit with KeroWACKED Multimedia Fest as it is an interactive public art. Ms. Coles-Dobay noted there is discussion the CRA may assist with the January Art Walk. The event was advertised on the Boynton Beach Arts District website and on Facebook. There is a large sign on Boynton Beach Boulevard. The CRA is supporting some of the Art Walk dates. The intent was to help support the January 18th Art Walk, and she did not know if the assistance would extend beyond January. It will be discussed at the next CRA meeting. Vice Chair Levine noted the Let Love Guide Your Way is now a multi-media travelling show. He was looking to do something around Valentine's Day, if the Board deemed it appropriate to have at the Art Walk. He has kinetic and hearts, cut outs and many items. Chair McQuire noted the Arts Commission had one tent at the Art Walk. The public engaged with the Arts Commission although no art was sold. He commented there could be more than one artist, or the artists could have a booth next to the Arts Commission. Ms. Oyer supported giving artists additional exposure. Chair McQuire thought if the Arts Commission was showcasing and artists, the Arts Commission should pay for the booth. Discussion followed the Arts Commission is not charged, and in the past, Artists Tom Brewitz and Lloyd Goradesky were part of the AIPP booth. Chair McQuire thought the information was a good guide, which could be changed. Ms. Oyer was concerned about lack of parking and the vendors not arriving early enough. The public started attending and the vendors could not park and unload their materials. She suggested a shuttle be used, or advertise where to park. She thought signs for vendor parking may be appropriate. Ms. Coles-Dobay pointed out the Walks are private events. Ms. Oyer thought parking and other logistics should be discussed with Rolando as attendance was outgrowing the event. There was consensus the Arts Commission 4 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach, Florida August 8, 2019 should continue to be involved with the Art Walks. Chair McQuire commented he would speak to Rolando about parking. Ms. Moodie's concern was how frivolo would the Arts Commission be in the project. They are participating in it, but working out the details was a different issue. Ms. Coles-Dobay reiterated the event is held on private property. Parking is not the responsibility of the Arts Commission. it McQuire suggested putting the September Art Walk on the next agenda. Motion Ms. Oyer moved to approve the AIPP Art Booth at the September 21st at the Boynton Beach Arts District. Ms. Weiss seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed. Some oft members volunteered to attend the event. Chair McQuire suggested the members reach out to friends and family to help out at the event from 6 to 9 p.m. B. Board Chair, Courtlandt McGuire participate in City Hall/Library Lobby art selection panel Ms. Coles-Dobay explained there is public art in storage. While reviewing the new City Hall, it was noted the Library Lobby has a large area and the art the City has is small. The to working on the Town Square Lobby, had an internal discussion out artwork and artists to look at, and the Arts Commission wanted to engage emerging artists and a Board Representative was needed. This would be for permanent art and not rotating. The art will be 8' by 12' canvas. Rotating exhibits will occur int Old High School Cultural Center, as there is gallery space on both floors int main halls, similar to what occurred with the Library exhibits. This discussion would take place on August 21 st, and Ms. Coles- Dobay will bring it back to the Board. They initially engaged a call to artists. C. There will be some type of ribbon-cutting ceremony. The members will be notified when the date is set. X. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Avenue of the Arts • Oct. 10 & 11 install dates • Nov. 15 opening reception date Chair McQuire announced the above and they are tossing around ideas for the reception on November 15th. The members the art planned for the Avenue and where they would be placed. X11.
