Aside from homework help, AmeriCorps mentor stresses
`importance of self-love'
I am important. I am beautiful. I can make a difference.
Positive affirmations are just one of the components of Dab Into Self-Love, Tia
Crawford's service project for the Palm Beach County Literacy AmeriCorps
program that served 40 girls in the fourth and fifth grades.
"The mission of my project was to help young girls grow and understand the
importance of self-love," said Crawford, 25. "I wanted them to know that the
words they speak over themselves have power."
Crawford, of Lake Worth, had four sponsors, 40 care packages assembled and 11
volunteers for the project.
"The event was a success and the girls loved it," she said.
Crawford"found myself' after college through the experience she gained from
her job in AmeriCorps. She was a part of the LeaderCorps Cohort V and was co-
chair, guiding 19 other members.
In May, Crawford spoke to fourth- and fifth-grade girls about self-esteem at
Galaxy E3 Elementary School in Boynton Beach. This is in addition to her many
service hours assisting students with their homework at the Boynton Beach City
Library, and the many other programs and projects the Literacy AmeriCorps
helps with throughout the year.

Crawford helps students in subjects like reading, writing, science and math, and
serves as a mentor, offering them guidance as necessary. She's also in charge of
the other AmeriCorps tutors, and is responsible for scheduling their time.
"The best part about working with kids is their energy and eagerness to learn,"
Crawford said. "I love how they can go from struggling learners to efficient
learners with the right amount of help."
Originally from Indianapolis, Crawford grew up in Rockford, Ill., and graduated
from Northern Illinois University. She majored in communications with an
emphasis in rhetoric and a minor in dance.
In five years, she hopes to have established her own nonprofit organization,
moving forward with her project, Dab Into Self-Love, and to continue building
up the youth in our communities.
"My career goals wrap around my heart of service," Crawford said. "The best part
of being a part of AmeriCorps is doing something greater than yourself. I
thought I was the one who would be making the impact but it's truly a two-way
street. The students I had the opportunity to work with also impacted me."
They are actively recruiting, interviewing and hiring for the next Literacy
AmeriCorps year, which starts in August. They can have 40 members. Visit

Patron Disputes/Suspends: Total number of accounts where collection efforts have been stopped because the patron
disputed the debt or the Library suspended collection efforts as a result of payment arrangements, mistakes, etc.
Accounts in Process:Total number of accounts being processed through our collection service. This number is arrived
at by subtracting Bankruptcies, Incorrect Addresses and Patron Disputes/Suspends from the total number of
Accounts Submitted.
#of Accounts Activated: Total number of accounts that have responded in some way to reduce their balance. They
could have returned material, made a payment or a combination of both.
%of Accounts Activated: Percentage of processed accounts that have responded in some way
(#of Accounts Activated divided by Accounts in Process). This percentage is a good measure of response rate
because it measures the percentage of patrons that have actually responded due to the collection process.

being worked_

Beginner ESOL Classes: 15
May was the final month for ESOL classes. The Beginning ESOL class was held from 9:00-10:15 A.M. on
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. I had three new students enroll in May, for a total of 9
enrolled by the end of the month. My core group of students that have been with me since the beginning of
the year all had an attendance rate over 50%, and four students had an attendance rate over 70%. Five are
from Haiti and speak Creole, one is from Mexico and speaks Spanish, one is from Brazil and speaks
Portuguese, and two are from Colombia and speak Spanish.

In May I planned out of Side by Side book two. Students learned the verb"give,"count vs. non-count nouns,
partitives, imperatives, "might,""maybe,"and the future tense using "will."Vocab units included foods,
partitive foods, and positive adjectives like"wonderful,""excellent,""out of this world,"etc.
Private Tutoring
I met with one student from the Advanced class every Tuesday for 45-minute sessions, totaling three hours in
May. During those sessions we worked on pronunciation and edited some of their personal projects for spelling
and grammar. I met with one other student for two one-hour sessions, totaling 2 hours in May. During those
sessions we worked out of the student's own English book to continue lessons she had started with a different
teacher. Those lessons focused primarily on reading comprehension and writing skills.
Advanced ESOL Classes: 18
The Advanced ESOL class was held from 10:30 — 11:45 A.M on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and
Thursdays. I didn't have any new students enroll in May, with five students enrolled by the end of the month.
Two are from Haiti and speak Creole, one is from Poland and speaks Polish and German, one is from Belarus
and speaks Belarusian, and one is from the Ukraine and speaks Russian.

In May I planned out of Side by Side book four. Students learned the past perfect continuous tense, perfect
modals including "should/shouldn't have,""May/might have,""could have,"and "must have,"and the passive
voice.
ESOL Program Highlights
The most notable moment in May was our end-of-the year celebration when students got a chance to mingle
outside the normal classroom atmosphere. We ate, talked, and played games which allowed them to practice
their English like Scrabble and Apples to Apples. This was a significant day for the class because it allowed
students to debrief and reflect on everything that happened through the course of the year. I was touched
that everyone was so grateful for the class, and I even got specific feedback from some students, like that
they appreciated my patience. As the students and I got to know each other personally, it was sad that our
May 2019 Monthly Report I Page 4
time together had come to an end, but lots of them signed up for one-on-one tutoring in June. During these
appointments I will be able to fill in any gaps they may have missed out on in the class, and hopefully sign
them up for Transparent Languages through the library.
