Before we board the golf cart (or walk the Avenue) I wanted to tell you about the City of Boynton Beach Art in Public Places program. It is funded by a 1% public art fee on development and redevelopment projects built in the City. 1% is calculated on the development project's construction value with 70% of the 1% staying in the project to create and install public art. The 30% of the 1% funds the Art in Public Places operations and programs such as the Avenue for the Arts, on loan, rotating outdoor exhibition. The large sculpture titled, Cavalcade in the courtyard is 500 Ocean's contribution to the program and was funded by the 70% of the 1% fee. This sculpture is the tallest public art in Palm Beach County and was created by world renowned sculptor, Albert Paley. This sculpture attracts visitors to downtown Boynton and is a landmark for the 500 Ocean project. Continue on to the Avenue of the Art tour. The Avenue the Arts rotates every year and serves as the Intl Kinetic Art Biennial's year long exhibition. In October 2020 new kinetics will be installed and in February 2021 the weekend event will take place. Keep posted on Boynton BeachArt.org to learn more. We are excited because when the Town Square redevelopment project is completed we will have more Avenue the Arts sites available and the new Cultural Center will be completed to host the indoor kinetic exhibition. How many know about the new Town Square redevelopment project? In 2017, the City formed a public-private partnership to redevelop 20 acres in downtown Boynton Beach. Where City Hall was along Boynton Beach Blvd. and Seacrest Blvd. will have a hotel and mix use with residential above commercial spaces. A new City Hall and Library building is being built at the corner of Seacrest Blvd and E. Ocean Ave. with an open space with an amphitheater for events. The Historic High School is being renovated into a Cultural Center surrounded by native landscaping showcasing the majestic kapok tree, the Children Schoolhouse Museum will have new modern interactive playgrounds, and a fire station with an energy substation to service the Town Center. Two large parking garages will accommodate visitors and residents. One will feature an amazing and educational public artwork titled, "Deep Ocean and Shore Reef" by emerging public artist Amanda Johnson. There are several public art projects that will be installed as permanent features. A 27' x 26' wide kinetic sculpture by internationally known Ralfonso.
