Minutes 01-09-20 Agenda for the Arts Commission Meeting Thursday, January 9, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. At Fire Station 2, Training Room 2615 West Woolbright Road, Boynton Beach, Florida Present: Courtland McQuire, Chair Debby Coles-Dobay Public Arts Manager Marcia Levine, Vice Chair Jehana Zell Clovis Moody Saddam Silverio Susan Oyer Absent: Dario Ayala Robyn Lorenz Martin Klauber I. Call to Order Chair McQuire called the meeting to order at 6:33 pm. II. Self-introductions Self-introductions were made. A quorum was present. III. Agenda Approval Motion Ms. Oyer moved to approve the agenda. Ms. Zell seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed. IV. Approve Meeting Minutes A. November 14, 2019 B. December 12, 2019 The minutes were not addressed. Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach< Florida January 9, 2020 V. Informational Items from the Board The artist Ms. Oyer had spoken about at the last meeting, Ian Wiskoff, who painted murals at the South Florida Science Museum was present. Mr. Wiskoff explained he has been in Boynton Beach for 15 years. He is from New York and attended the New York City School of Visual Arts. He moved to Florida and worked in animation studios and web graphics and started teaching three years ago. He painted the first mural for the Museum in 2017 in the staircase. He provided conceptual drawings for the Observatory and he was then asked to create a mural for the descending stairway. He finished the mural in December. He runs the Art Club at school and wants to be more involved. Mr. Wiskoff advised he was unaware of the Arts Commission. He uses art in his Civics class to help students learn. He announced it works. He does art for his kids in class. VI. Announcements/Reports A. December 27th, 11:00— 11:30 a.m. Avenue of the Arts "Color Effects" tour Chair McQuire announced the above. He commented there were docent volunteers conducting the tour, but it was off and on and a rainy day. He also noted the last time the tour was held not many people RSVP'd. Ms. Coles-Dobay explained this last time there were quire a few people and some calls. Seven individuals took the tour. One woman was interested in becoming a docent and she brought people from Kendall with her. The tours are receiving good exposure. B.January 17th 11:00 — 11:30 a.m. Avenue of the Arts "Color Effects" tour Chair McQuire announced the above upcoming tour. C.January 18th 6—9 p.m. BBAD Art Walk"InCulture Season Kick Off'—"Reflections" with artist Ralfonso and fabricator Eric Small of EES The Arts Commission had previously voted not to attend the December Art Walk, but would attend in January because the CRA is contributing to the event. Chair McQuire, Ms. Oyer and Mr. Silverio planned to attend. They will have a big screen video presentation and pictures. Ms. Coles-Dobay will present artist Ralfonso's work and the video of the artwork being made. Ralfonso and the fabricator of the piece, Eric Small, would be present to discuss the art. Both individuals are very engaging. Information about the event was published on Facebook and the CRA website and a lot of advertising and promotion was put into the event. It was noted January is peak season, and the Art Walk will take place on a long weekend, so turnout should be good. The City is also celebrating MILK Jr. Day at Sara Sims Park. Ms. Coles-Dobay noted volunteers will be needed to set up the booth for the January 18th Walk. Chair McQuire agreed to arrive early to set up. Ms. Oyer would try to as well. 2 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach< Florida January 9, 2020 Ms. Coles-Dobay announced she has a new assistant she will bring to the meeting. Ms. Oyer announced they have 19 entries for the Sister Cities art competition. Boynton has been working with Delray this year and they did not receive any entries so they extended the deadline. Sister Cities has been holding the competition for years, but this is probably the last year as there was a shift away from the art. There are other components to Sister Cities competitions and students are not applying for the art. The art will be judged from 5:30 pm to 6 pm at City Hall on Quantum Boulevard on Tuesday, January 14th. Ms. Coles-Dobay will send an email out, Ms. Moodie, Ms. Zell and Vice Chair Levine will serve as the three judges. Ms. Oyer noted a Boynton student won the last two years of the competition and went on to become the international winner, resulting in Sister Cities using her drawing as the logo for their convention. The competition is advertised through high school art departments. VII. Project Updates/Approvals A. Friday, March 27th Ralfonso's Kinetic Art "Reflections" unveiling in Town Square Ms. Coles-Dobay explained the Town Square completion has many moving parts. The kinetic artwork is currently scheduled to be installed the first week in March and the unveiling target date is March 27th. The piece will be covered as site work will be ongoing so as not to damage the piece's polish. Each artwork that is completed will have a collaborative opening and be included. Ralfonso will put together the unveiling ceremony and time, which most likely will occur in evening around 5 pm to 7 pm. Members could save the date and think about suggestions for the unveiling and decide if they want light refreshments. It is important for the public and the press to attend and the unveiling occur before the sun goes down. VIII. New Business A. Election of Board Chair and Vice Chair Chair McQuire asked who was interested in serving as Chair. Only Chair McQuire was interested in serving as Chair. Chair McQuire asked who was interested in serving as Vice Chair. Ms. Oyer and Vice Chair Levine were interested in serving. Vice Chair Levine explained she would like to continue as Vice Chair. She believes in rotations, but had only served for a short time so she wanted to continue on in to the Kinetic Art events. After this year, she would like to rotate. Vice Chair Levine explained she has enjoyed the role. She enjoys working at the Cornell Museum and seeing things from an art perspective, attending the Board and City Commission meetings as Vice Chair and learning. It was noted the Vice Chair can vote, and conducts the meeting in the absence of the Chair. 3 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach< Florida January 9, 2020 Ms. Oyer added the Vice Chair runs the meeting if the Chair has a conflict of interest. She knows Robert's Rules, has been on the Arts Commission for several years, attends the events, is active with various artists around and she visits art on vacation. Ms. Oyer explained she actively supports art in the Sister Cities program and in addition to attending City Commission and CRA for years, she always works on ways to make improvements. She is an active vocal voice, promoting the Arts Commission in the community and on social media. She will continue to do an outstanding job and give support to run meetings with Robert's Rules how it should be done. Ms. Oyer nominated herself as Vice Chair. Chair McQuire nominated Ms. Levine. A vote was taken to retain Ms. Levine. Ms. Moody, Mr. Silverio, Ms. Levine and Chair McQuire voted in support. Ms. Levine was retained as Vice Chair. Chair McQuire humbly thanked the Arts Commission for serving and learning. He loves the involvement of the Arts Commission and getting hands dirty is part of the process. He advised he loves being a part of the meetings and he looks forward to the Kinetic Art show. IX. Unfinished Business None. X. Future Business A. Town Square Public Art Projects update Ms. Coles-Dobay announced she would bring an update on the status all of the projects and hoped to provide a timeline. B. AIPP booth and Board attendance at future BBAD Art Walks Ms. Coles-Dobay explained the members decided not to attend the December Art Walk and attend the one in January. She proposed the members discuss how to proceed with the Art Walks after the January event. The January Art Walk is the 13th and the February event is on February 15th. The members could give Ms. Coles-Dobay their feedback at the January meeting or contact her after the January event. She explained artist Lynn Doyal, the selected public artist for the Fire Station or the artist selected for the Police Station could be featured. Ms. Coles-Dobay will find out if they are available. Ms. Moodie suggested making a presentation of the various art throughout the City, showing attendees where he art is located. Ms. Coles-Dobay thought it was a good idea to have a continuous video showing the art and where it is. 4 Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Boynton Beach< Florida January 9, 2020 Vice Chair Levine announced she had passes for Art Palm Beach event at the Palm Beach County Convention Center from January 30 to February 3rd. She commented it is a cool event. XI. Adjournment Motion There being no further business to discuss, Ms. Zell moved to approve. The motion was duly seconded and unanimously passed.
