Announcements/Presentations/Correspondence
Ms. Claude had no report. Ms. Wilkinson commented she ran into Mayor Steven Grant
before Thanksgiving and they spoke about the Board. She invited him to come to the
meeting, but was unsure he would be able to attend. She conveyed the Mayor wanted
to share with the Board the City participated in the Jumpstart Read for the Record in
October, which is a large-scale literacy event held across the country. The books were
read to Freedom Shores Elementary School students and then after, the teachers have
the students write thank you notes to the readers. She advised one student wrote a
note to do everything they could to save the iguanas in Boynton. The conversation was
that iguanas are invasive. It was noted the City is taking on a gardening project at the
school. They already have a multi-sensory garden for autism spectrum students which
is calming and de-escalating for the students. The Mayor was hoping to jump into that
project to promote things that are indigenous and not so invasive related to that child's
concerns for the iguanas.

1. SAC Presentation Updates
Ms. Wilkinson gave a School Advisory Committee (SAC) presentation at Boynton Beach
Community High School last month. She reviewed the PowerPoint prepared for the
presentation beforehand and made a few corrections. She thought the presentation was
well received and the SAC members requested the Board include Rolling Green on the
list of schools to assist. She noted she had seen several people she had worked with in
the past.
Ms. Young and Chair Murphy spoke at a Galaxy Elementary School SAC meeting
yesterday, and her perception was they were not familiar with the Board and wanted the

meeting dates. She was unable to open the presentation, however Chair Murphy was
able to assist her. Galaxy's meetings could be held virtually or in person, but they
decided to present remotely due to the pandemic. She is supposed to present to the
SAC at Poinciana next month.
Chair Murphy made a presentation at Rolling Green and he is supposed to make a
presentation at Congress Middle School on the 9th. The Rolling Green presentation was
well received. He had not heard from Forest Park Elementary School, but would reach
out to them. He noted there were some concerns about presentations at Atlantic High
School and Santeluces.
B. Fundraising
Chair Murphy asked the members for fundraising ideas. There were none received.
C. Grants
Chair Murphy had not had the opportunity to review any grants. He hoped all had a nice
Thanksgiving.
D. Bob Borovy Student Citizen of the Year Award
Ms. Claude explained the applications will be released in the spring. The application
was also available on the website. She agreed to send the link out to the members.
Ms. Wilkinson explained the Greater Education Foundation holds an annual Barrier
Free 5K Race event in February coordinated by the City, the Realtors Association in our
area and Hunters Run that is normally held on the second Saturday in February. She
announced the Race will be a virtual event this year and run for two months. The goal is
the participants have to log 30 miles in those two months in any form of exercise. They
have a race coordinator who was working with Mr. Young and they are attempting to
have the race go through all the parks virtually. They may start at Barrier Free Park and
then to Oceanfront Park, then to Meadows and at each stop they hope to have
sponsors to give away a coupon or something as they check in. The website is currently
live and it is part of the race roster site. Ms. Wilkinson will send the link. The race will
start January 1st or just after New Year's and run until the end of February. People can
still get their shirts and medals if they participate. Ms. Wilkinson thought it was a good
deal.
The race coordinator has realized the effect the pandemic has had on non-profit
organizations, so she created a fundraising effort called Running Community Cares. It
is a way for people to just donate money to the non-profits that are lacking because the
races are not occurring. She will send the link and commented she has a match for the

first $10K they get and there are six non-profits involved. People can direct where their
donation would go or split a donation between all six non-profits.
Mr. Young noted Kevin Dutervil arrived at 6:28 p.m. Mr. Young also added he and Ms.
Wilkinson have been meeting about the Barrier Free 5K and they are including several
parks. He clarified normally there is the Magic Wheels and Special Deals and the 5K
race. They are two separate events, but they work together. They decided to have that
event in person on February 13th. Some of the vendors that participate, will also
participate in the virtual 5K to make attendees aware of their products and they
accommodate people with disabilities. He thought the Magic Wheels and Special Deals
will be at the amphitheater at City Hall this year. There are many good things occurring
in spite of the pandemic.
Ms. Wilkinson explained the Magic Wheels and Special Deals event ties into the race.
They have people that volunteer to build a special costumed wheelchair for the
honorary starter for the race. They had a Cinderella carriage last year, a black panther
throne, the Lighting McQueen race car from the movie Cars. The costume fits around
the wheelchair and the organizers are thankful for the people who volunteer to build
them. The Magic Wheels and Special Deals has always been held the evening before
the race and on the day of the race, they have vendors employing or owned by people
with disabilities such as the Chocolate Spectrum which is completely owned and
operated by individuals on the autism spectrum.
Ms. Murrell noted a few years ago with the Parkland Shooting, she got involved with the
educational system and Take Stock in Children, which is a mentoring program. There
are minimal qualifications for the student and mentor. They meet and the student is
awarded a college scholarship. She thought it was a win-win program, but they need
volunteers. They meet a certain number of times during the school year. This year she
was meeting her mentee virtually. She would like to submit information for the members
to get involved as it is a great program for the student and the mentor. Chair Murphy
was familiar with the program. They have a college extension where they can mentor
students in college as many students do not have the tools for college at the next level.
They track the students to see how far they go and what they do from there. Chair
Murphy thought it was a great opportunity for the Board. Ms. Murrell agreed to send the
information to Ms. Claude to distribute to the members.
VII. Future Meeting Dates: January 28, 2021
February 25, 2021
Chair Murphy announced the next two meetings. He encouraged all to think of
fundraising events so they could be of service to the local schools and to think of virtual
activities. He wished all an awesome holiday.
