Each time their exercise is logged on the virtual race, it converts to a distance. With every few miles the participant goes, they make their way to the next park in the City. Mr. Young noted they would have loved to have the actual race, but due to COVID, Ms. Wilkinson's team came up with the virtual race. He noted people can still register. So far, only 15 people registered. Madeleine Ely, the Race Director, put together a group called Running Community Cares, which are six non-profit vendors that usually attend the race. Although virtual, participants can still make donations to them and the Greater Boynton Foundation received a total donation of just under$1 K. Mr. Young will make an announcement to employees and the Risk Management Department because normally City employees participate. Ms. Wilkinson wanted to speak about it during public audience at the next virtual City Commission meeting, but was unsure how to do so. Mr. Young explained if she is in the audience, she should raise her hand and he advised he would forward further details. New Board Member Jessica Wilkinson was introduced. Jessica Wilkinson explained she is known as "Jess." She is a sophomore at Atlantic High School and is very involved with the Lake Worth Playhouse. She was excited to be working with the members. SAC Presentation Updates Ms. Wilkinson explained she did not contact Christa McAuliffe Middle School and asked if she should touch base with them or if Chair Murphy already had. Chair Murphy requested Ms. Wilkinson do so. Vice Chair Gadson spoke at Citrus Cove Elementary School and they were very receptive and excited, and loved the PowerPoint presentation regarding funding and the Board partner with other schools. They were excited to partner with the Board to receive funding as well. Chair Murphy appreciated the members volunteering to speak at the School Advisory Committee (SAC) meetings. He hoped it would spark interest in the schools and teachers, and liked that the Board was creating some kind of friction and was moving forward in a progressive way.. B. Fundraising Chair Murphy asked if any of the members had any thoughts about fundraising. He noted there was a Run/Walk for Education, and he thought it was an awesome opportunity to build teams and have a virtual walk. The members had to find team captains to build teams. It is an easy way to raise funds and he agreed to bring more information to the Board in March or April. Ms. Wilkinson advised the reason she brought up Community Cares was because it was advertising that people can post and share on Facebook to their friends and set up a donate now button. The way it was done with the other group was that they were not begging for money. She thought they may be able to find a sponsor to match donations. A statement could say they were in need of funds. Chair Murphy commented they got team captains of five or ten who got$10 or$15 dollars each and it adds up. He thought it was a simple activity to raise a good amount of funds. They advertised for the Bob Borovy scholarship and the balance is $885 and the scholarship is $1 K. They tried the Texas Road House, the Board did not get enough participation from everyone, even from the Board. Dr. Rada commented she was out of commission due to some medical issues. She reminded the Board she still has her check for$100 so they have $985 now. She will mail the check to Ms. Claude or drop it off. C. Bob Borovy Student Citizen of the Year Award Chair Murphy noted the Borovy scholarship is advertised as a $1 K scholarship and further realized the Borovy Award fund had $50 and the Harvey Oyer Community Contributions had $885. He asked if the funds could be transferred to cover the scholarship and learned they could. The application deadline is March 1 st and is on the 3 Meeting Minutes Education and Youth Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida January 28, 2021 City's website. Chair Murphy requested the members let any high school senior that is a resident or attends a Boynton Beach School that the scholarship is available. It is also on the school district's scholarship page. Ms. Claude had emailed information. Anyone with recommendations for judges should let Ms. Claude know or bring it up at the February meeting. Ms. Wilkinson thought the Board should continue to market the scholarship as a $1 K scholarship. VIII. Future Meeting Dates: February 25, 2021 March 25, 2021 Chair announced the next meeting dates. IX. Adjournment Motion Ms. Wilkinson moved to adjourn. Dr. Rada seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed. The meeting adjourned at 6:26 p.m. Catherine Cherry t ` Minutes Specialist 4
