B. Fundraising
Ms. Young asked if the Board could move forward with accepting a donation from
Harvey Oyer. Mr. Young advised if the Board wants to accept the donation, they can.
The City has also partnered with Mr. Oyer on projects and is currently focusing on a
history trail. Ms. Young inquired what the next step was to accept the donation and
inquired how the other members felt about the donation. Vice Chair Gadson recalled
the members wanted to wait to hear back from the it . She also was familiar with the
individual but also did not want to overlook deserving students that could be assisted by
the donation. Mr. Patterson asked where else the Board could obtain funding and was
unaware of the background regarding the donation. Vice Chair Gadson explained they
have not been diligent trying to raise funds and the last two fundraisers were not as
successful in their fundraising efforts as Chair Murphy would have liked.
There was agreement totable the matter.
C. Bob Borovy Student Citizen of the Year Award
Last month the Board agreed to expand the criteria for the award, which would apply to
next year's award. This year, three eligible applications and three ineligible applications
were received and the essays were sent tote judges. Their scores are due by
Monday and the idea is to recognize the winner at a City Commission meeting.
Ms. Claude responded they receive out five applicants per year, but with the
residency restrictions removed, more individuals will qualify. Ms. Claude also sends the
information directly to the schools, and it is advertised in Fun are Magazine.
Ms. Young thought it may have been more difficult to get the word out because any
students were not in school.
