Minutes 11-07-22 Minutes of the Senior Advisory Board Regular Meeting Held at City Hall, Commission Chamber, 100 E. Ocean Avenue Boynton Beach, Florida, on Monday, November 7, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. PRESENT: Sandra Watson, Chair Kacy Young, Recreation and Parks Director Ann Cwynar Franky Lazo, Assistant Director Danny Ferrell Brent Rolle, Board Liaison Thomas Devlin Mary DeGraffenreidt, Recreation Manager Marcia Levine ABSENT: James Watson Jane Garcia Deale Christina Charles I. Call to Order Chair Watson called the meeting to order at 2:04 P.M. II. Pledge of Allegiance The members recited the Pledge to the Flag. III. Attendance — Introduction of New Board Member A quorum was present. IV. Approval of Agenda 1. Additions, Deletions, Corrections Chair Watson added to New Business, Boynton Bay residents Thanksgiving events and National Volunteer Week. 2. Adoption Motion Chair Watson moved to approve the agenda as amended. Ms. Cwynar seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The motion passed unanimously. VI. Public Input (Comments limited to 3 minutes and 1 Turn) Hillary Gale, Director of Client Services, Feeding South Florida, stated that they have a branch facility located on Park Ridge and Gateway, next to Boynton Beach High School and that they feed 157K food insecure individuals in Palm Beach County and 1.1M in their service area. She reviewed their programs, specific to senior citizens and she invited the members to tour their facility. Ms. Gale stated that they have a prepared meal delivery program and a senior grocery box and seniors interested in receiving the service call and go through the intake process. She explained that while they are open to seniors, they also serve individuals who are disabled. She said that they bring in volunteers, but most of them are in community kitchen preparing and packing foods, and sorting and inspecting products received from their donors. VII. Unfinished Business i. Senior Advisory Board Survey Questions This item was tabled. ii. Update on Senior Resource List Ms. Levine stated that she submitted her list and stated that she did not know if anyone looked at it. She had five or six entries to add to it. She said that she thought if they distributed it, it should be in a format that could live and be a live document and whoever will handle the list, will have to be amenable to keep the document updated. Mr. Devlin said that he the City may have some documents they can put in a printable format they could update quarterly. Ms. Levine said that she thought that they had a pretty credible document to use. Mr. Devlin suggested approaching the City to learn which department would update it and print in it. She stated that she did not include assisted living centers and she hoped by the end of the year, they would have a new printable resource list. She stated that thought perhaps by the next quarters printing, they could get the information in a printable form to distribute. Update on Name Tags, shirts, table cloth and banner This item was tabled. iv. Commission Meeting Presentation Updates This item was tabled. V. Updates: (Thanksgiving Baskets and Food Basket Goal) Mr. Ferrell stated that the baskets they are working on with the Boynton Beach Faith Based CDC are going great. He mentioned that they currently have 20 Publix gift cards given to them for turkey's and other food stuff, three rubber maid containers full of food, 50 pounds of green beans and 50 pounds of yams, both donated from Bedner's and all will be picked up on the 16th. He said that the CDC will pick up the items from his home and they will distribute the baskets to families that have been lined up. He requested the members keep this in mind for next year, so that it would be more organized. He stated that Sherry Johnson is the contact for the Senior Program. VIII. Presentations to the Senior Advisory Board L John Sawdon, Mae Volen Outreach Mr. Sawdon, Mae Volen Outreach distributed a short outline about the Center and stated that is has been around since 1968. He said that they offer life enrichment programs, transportation and they established an adult day care program for dementia and early stage Alzheimer's patients, run by RNs with LPNs and CNAs running programs at two sites. He stated that their staff to client ratio is five to one. He explained what the programs offer families. He mentioned that The Center has community care, home health care services and have volunteer services with 110 volunteers. He said that they reinstituted the AARP Driving Classes once a month for$35 and also have an Alzheimer's support group. He stated that anyone can use bus service and he gave the information about the adult day care. He commented that to services are for seniors 60 years old and over. ii. Gerda Klein, Boynton Beach Mental Health Gerda Klein explained some of the projects and activities that the Boynton Beach Mental Health Committee has undertaken. She stated that they were originally known as Boynton Beach Mental Health Initiative, an organization that she started in 2009 when her bi-polar son died by suicide and she sought to do something to honor him and help others. She mentioned that in 2014, Mayor Taylor and Commissioner Board Member Hay, heard about her work and invited the Committee to help the City, so they changed the name of the organization and City residents applied to sit on the Committee, with 3 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida November 7, 2022 Commissioner Hay serving as Chair. She said that the Committee has partnered with Baptist Health, The City of Boynton Beach, Healthier Boynton Beach Family Caregiving Initiative, the City Library Genesis Health, National Alliance for the Mentally III (NAMI) of PBC, and others to build a stronger mental health community via education, awareness and access to integrated health and support systems. She reviewed the Committee's affiliations in the community and noted most of their volunteers are seniors. She said that they recently held a memorial service to provide closure to those who lost loved ones to mental illness and to COVID. Ms. Klein advised that they received several mini grants from Healthier Together Boynton Beach and each May, a proclamation is given in recognition of Mental Health. She said that they provide mental health first aid training and encouraged the members to take the training and be invested in senior mental health. She noted that one in five people, at some time will experience a mental health challenge, and on average it will take someone 10 years to get help. She explained that training is available for mental health volunteers. iii. Sherry Johnson, Boynton Beach Faith Based CDC Chair Watson noted that Ms. Johnson was not in attendance, so no presentation was made. IX. New Business i. Partnership Program with Delray Beach Arts Garage Chair Watson stated that she has a partnership with the Arts Garage and wanted to get more seniors from Boynton Beach to attend their programs. She sends an email to Mr. Rolle and he responds with the names of individuals who are interested in attending. She also advised that there are all different programs and she hoped that they could arrange for transportation. ii. Preparation to apply for the CDBG for transportation Chair Watson advised that she still has to contact the City regarding CDBG for transportation. She announced that Boynton Bay was having a luncheon for their residents on November 18th, and a Thanksgiving dinner for their low-income resident families. She asked Mr. Rolle to provide an update about Senior Center events. She noted that next week was National Volunteer Week and hoped that they could do something next year for a volunteer day or volunteer week, in memory of former Board Member Judy Lyman. She noted that National Volunteer Week is usually the second week in April and International Volunteer Day is usually the first Sunday in December Ms. Levine commented that Glenn Weiss, the Public Art Manager, mentioned that they would like to have groups of Seniors 55 Plus come to the Kinetic Art and Symposium event next year. 4 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida November 7, 2022 Chair Watson asked if there were any recommendations for Vice Chair. There being none, there was agreement to table. X. Next Meeting December 5, 2022 Agenda items would be due by Tuesday, November 22, 2022. XI. Adjournment Motion There being no further business to discuss, Mr. Devlin moved to adjourn. Ms. Levine seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 3:26 P.M.
