Minutes 03-06-23 Minutes of the Senior Advisory Board Regular Meeting Held at City Hall, Commission Chamber, 100 E. Ocean Avenue Boynton Beach, Florida, on Monday, February 6, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. PRESENT: Sandra Watson, Chair Brent Rolle, Recreation Supervisor Danny Ferrell, Vice Chair Justin Johnson, Marketing & Outreach Manager Marcia Levine Mary DeGraffenreidt, Recreation Manager Ann Cwynar ABSENT: Christina Charles Thomas Devlin James Watson I. Call to Order Chair Watson called the meeting to order at 2:01 P.M. II. Pledge of Allegiance The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Ill. Attendance A quorum was present. IV. Approval of Agenda 1. Additions, Deletions, Corrections 2. Adoption Motion Ms. Cwynar moved to approve the agenda. Vice Chair Ferrell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. V. Approval of Minutes Motion Ms. Cwynar moved to approve the January 9th Meeting Minutes. Ms. Levine seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Update on Name Tags, shirts, table cloth and banner Chair Watson stated that she was looking at tablecloths and recalled Mary DeGraffFenreidt, Recreation Manager, had said that the Board can use the Recreation and Parks Department tablecloth. She advised that someone will sponsor a tablecloth with the Senior Advisory Board's name on it with the City Logo. She asked if the members wanted a tee shirt. After discussion, the members decided that the badge was sufficient and the tee shirt was not necessary. Ms. Levine pointed out that Eleanor Krusell has red volunteer shirts. She suggested that it would be sufficient if the members get the tee shirts from her to wear with the badge. VIII. Presentations to the Senior Advisory Board i. Tequesta Alston (Brain Matters Research) No presentation was made and this item was moved to Unfinished Business. IX. New Business i. MLK Day of Service Report (S. Watson & M. Levine) Ms. Levine stated that she and Chair Watson attended the MLK Day of Service. She said that they did not have a lot of information at the table, but that they spoke about the Senior Resource List, had a sign-in sheet and that they are trying to get an email list together. She advised that without the tablecloth, people approached the table to find out what they represented. She announced that she mingled and Tequesta Alton, of Brain Matters Research, was there, so she asked if she would speak at a Senior Advisory Board meeting, and if so, to contact Chair Watson. She said it was a good community day and a good day to talk about the Board. Vice Chair Ferrell stated that he also attended the Day of Service and it was a good event helping to clean up the community around the Sims Center. ii. Transportation Disadvantaged "TD Program" (D. Ferrell) Vice Chair Ferrell distributed information and spoke about the Paratransit Service by Palm Tran, especially as it pertains to seniors. He explained that if a senior cannot make it to the bus stop, they can receive door-to-door service and, that the information how to schedule the pick-up was on the handout. He advised that it is easy to get approved. 2 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida February 6, 2023 Chair Watson mentioned that she and Vice Chair Ferrell just came from an event hosted by the Senior Care Program, by the Boynton Beach Faith Based CDC, as they have an annual Black History Luncheon. She announced that they mentioned the Board on the back of the program as one of their partners and that they were recognized by name. Chair Watson commented that while she was at the MLK event, she learned that they have Pickle Ball Courts at the Ezell Hester Center. She said that she will get with Todd Johnson, Recreation Supervisor, to try to get free passes to distribute to seniors. She thought seniors would be excited as they have new pickle ball courts at the Tennis Center at 3110 S. Congress as well. Justin Johnson, Recreation and Parks Outreach and Marketing Manager, said that the courts at the Hester Center are listed in FunFare Magazine and that the six pickle ball courts at the Tennis Center are permanent, but the ones at the Hester Center are flexible. Chair Watson announced that she went to the Kinetic Event, which was a wonderful event and that people are seeing the SAB. She stated that the program with the Art Garage is still going strong. iii. Senior Resource List (M. Levine) Ms. Levine reported that the Senior Resource List is now live and it is located in various places on the City's website. Brent Rolle, Recreation Supervisor, demonstrated how to access the list. Ms. Levine stated that if any information changes, the members should contact her and the list will be updated. She noted that the information is also contained on the Library's Website. Chair Watson commented that the members had been discussing holding a signature event and she requested that the members bring back ideas for an event that they can hold this year. She said that they had met with the City Manager and spoke about holding a signature event at the Cultural Arts Center, and mentioned that they would have to pay to rent a space there, but the City Manager would look into it. Chair Watson stated that the food caterer for the Kinetic event was excellent and that the entire setup for the venue was great. She suggested that they have something like that, but that the Cultural Arts Center does not yet have a sound system. Mr. Ferrell commented that a Downtown Art Festival would be good. Ms. Levine noted that Glenn Weiss, Public Art Manager, has exhibits every two or three months at the Cultural Art Center. She suggested that they could find senior artists in various disciplines and have Mr. Weiss put on his calendar of art presented by seniors. 3 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida February 6, 2023 She stated that they could have a panel or a juried exhibit, and have a dinner She commented that any funds raised could be donated to a senior organization. Chair Watson requested that the members hone in on an idea because they have the time to plan for it. Ms. Levine said that they could partner with another organization and that Allan Hendricks is holding a Pride Tribe LGBTQ+ Healthy Aging Resource Expo on February 18th at the Compass Center at 201 N. Dixie Highway in Lake Worth. She stated that Mr. Hendricks has already signed on a lot of organizations, encompassing travel, health, estate planning, wellness, social resources, transportation and home improvements. She mentioned that admission is free, there will be a Town Hall Panel Discussion, and food and beverages will be available She said that the Board could be represented there and that she was available. She noted that Compass is a LGBTQ+ Center where they do a lot of work and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ Community. iv. Senior Advisory Board attend Commission Meeting 2/7 (M. Levine) Ms. Levine suggested that in the next month or two, they draft a wrap up of what they have done from 2022 to the present. She said that they could put together a PowerPoint presentation and hopefully they can get on a City Commission agenda. She commented that tomorrow, at the City Commission meeting, she would talk about the Senior Resource List. Chair Watson stated that Election Day is March 14th. She asked if they can get on a City Commission agenda in March to make the presentation about what they accomplished. Ms. Levine requested that the members send her ideas and pictures for the PowerPoint Presentation. She said that she is working with the City on the conduit to have the Senior Resource List printed. Mr. Johnson stated that the issue for the list is not the printing, it is the constant updates, how many brochures to print, and how often the brochure would be updated. Ms. Levine said that they should update once a quarter or at least once every six months and that 500 copies of the brochure should be printed to start. Mr. Johnson stated that he will research the cost and report back to the Board or Mr. Rolle. Chair Watson commented that she hoped to have them by next month. Mr. Johnson responded that he will try to have them by next month and that they will also use a QR Code that goes straight to the Senior Resource List. 4 Meeting Minutes Senior Advisory Board Boynton Beach, Florida February 6, 2023 Mary DeGraffenreidt, Recreation Manager, stated that Mr. Johnson and Mr. Rolle do a wonderful job and that the Board should work with them, as they are a resource and she is a backup. The Board should let them know what they need as they are only a phone call away. X. Next Meeting ...................... March 6, 2023, Agenda items would be due by Thursday February 23, 2023. XI. Adjournment Motion There being no further business before the Board, Ms. Levine moved to adjourn. Ms. Cwynar seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 2:44 P.M.
