(ADDITION OF SATELLITE DISH
AT SERVICE MERCHANDISE)
As a condition of site plan modification, the following comments should
be incorporated into the related documents by the applicant:
1. Complete engineering documents must be submitted. These documents
must be signed and sealed and indicate how all proposed loads will
be carried by the existing roof system.
2. The satellite dish must be screened on three (3) sides to a height
equivalent to the total height of the mounted satellite dish.*
The applicant's prompt compliance with the preceding comments will insure
a timely permitting process.

RE: CATALINA CENTRE PLAT NO. 2(SATELLITE DISH)
STAFF COMMENTS
Please be advised of the Planning Department's comments in
connection with the above-referenced request for approval of an
amended site plan:
1. Indicate the height of the satellite dish to the top
of the dish including the mounting device.
2. The satellite dish will not be visible within a 365
foot radius from the dish, however at a distance
greater than 365 feet, such as Congress Avenue and
the multifamily residential project west or behind
the shopping center, the dish will be visible.
3. It is recommended .that the dish comply with the new
satellite dish ordinance that was approved at the
July 5, 1988 City Commission meeting upon first
reading and will be scheduled for second reading
July 19, 1988. The ordinance will require screening
on three sides to the top of the dish.

INTRODUCTION

This reFort presents a pr~Hminarj .~nalysis of the non-penetrating rc'Of
mount fer t..~e 1.8M antenna system. The purpose of the analysis i$ to
c:ietermi!lo: t~~e dead w-:ig!lt r~quir~d to stabilize the an~nna, and t1le load
dist:"ibuuon on l~~ roof du~ to t..~is wo::ight.
SUMMART OF RESULTS
The non-penetration roof mount (N.P mount) is a 12 :{ 12 foot square
platJoro whic~ pro..,ides attachment for a straight mast wit.~ legs for
mount:lg of t~e an~nna. Each of the fOllr 6 foot squar~ panels t.'1at make up
the platform is loaded in its center \I1it..~ weights (Figuri? 1). Preliminary
calculations ha';e shovo/Il t..~at 1800 pounds of weight (450 per panel) is
requir-=d to resist overturning of the an~nna in a 125 miih 'mnd (\.vim a 1.5
safety factor).
The nominal roo! loading is t.~en 'If;OO/( 12 x (2) = 12.5 Ib/ft2. Eowe~ler, t.1e
actual roof loading is dependent on t.l1e physical properties of the roof itself.
If the roof is veri rigid, the load on the roof V',;11 be highest directly under
tlle weighted area of the panel and much less away from the weights. It the
roof surface is very flexible, t.~e pressure distribution will be nearly uniform
at 12 1/2 Ib/ft2. Pri?ssure distribution for roofs of two differ€-nt stiffnesses
(K ,.,atues) are ShO..,...l1 in Figures 2 and .3.
CONCLUSIONS
The panels of the N.P mount distribute the dead load well over a flexible roof
surface. For a roof whose spring constant is 500 Ib/ft2/in, the maximum
pressure is 24 Ib/ft under ~e weight and 7 Ib/ft2 at the center of the
platform. T~ts of the Prodelin facility roof indicate a spring constant of 250
to 100 lb/tt/in, or even softer than the K used in the analysis. This roof is
typical of manufacturing/~rehouse facilities and consists of steel decking
supported on bar joists, covered with a foam sponge insulation and a rubber
?#aterproof membrane. These type of roofs cannot tolerate high
concentra~d loads and therefore require a load distributing system such as
the N.P mount presented here provides.

Rigid roofs will see higher pressures directly under the weights. However, a
rigid roof, such as a reinforced concrete roof, can support greater point loads
