Dear M~ ye.J.e.r
In an earlier letter, I indicated that from time to time we would communicate to you
information which we believe will be of interest concerning Motorola Inc. I am pleased at
this time to send you the two attached documents on Motorola and its plans in Florida.
The first press release provides information on Motorola's second quarter financial
performance. In commenting on the results, William J. Weisz, Vice Chairman and Chief
Operating Officer, noted that "We experienced reduced profit margin in the quarter on
modest sales growth as we continued planned investments in technology, market
development and fixed assets in strategic areas to meet future opportunities."
One example of this commitment to key programs is Motorola's new manufacturing-
administration complex in Boynton Beach. As the second press release indicates,
construction on this important new facility is proceeding on schedule, and we hope to be
moving portions of our Paging Division operations into Boynton Beach within a year. This
new facility will enable our rapidly growing Florida businesses to meet and take advantage
of future opportunities.
If you have any questions or would like any additional information, please feel free to
contact me.
Sincerely,

The corporation's return on average invested capi tal
(stockholders' equity plus long- and short-term debt. net
of marketable securities) over the past four quarters was
9.4 percent compared to 12.5 percent earned during the
same period ending with the second quarter of 1981.
! - - The figures for 1981 have been restated to include the
results of Four-Phase Systems, Inc.. which was acquired in
March 1982.
In reviewing the corporation's operations. William J.
Weisz. vice chairman and chief operating officer. noted
that "We experienced reduced profit margin in the quarter
on modest sales growth as we continued planned investments
in technology, market development and fixed assets in
strategic areas to meet future opportunities."
"The sales and earnings of Motorola's international
businesses were adversely impacted during the quarter by
the increasing strength of the u.S. dollar," he said.
adding that "the strong u.S. dollar also led to transla-
tion gains in the quarter ~on foreign currency borrowings."
Compared to results in the quarter a year earlier, the
Communications Sector increased both sales and new orders
by approximately 8 percent and backlog by 14 percent--with
some orders scheduled for extended delivery. The sector
had a lower operating profit margin compared to this same
period last year.

The Semiconductor Products Sector's sales were approx-
imately flat in the quarter with a 17 percent increase in
new orders. Backlog remained at about the same level as
last year at this time. Operating profit margin in the
sector was lower than the same period last year.
The revenues of the Information Systems Group in-
creased approximately 16 percent in the quarter wi th re-
duced operating prof i t marg in as a resul t of Four-Phase
Systems' performance. New orders were lower compared to
the second quarter of 1981 due to significantly reduced
international
bookings
of
Four-Phase
Systems,
which
reflects a condition started in the last half of 1981.
Sales in the Automotive and Industrial Electronics
Group increased modestly wi th an excellent improvement in
the operating profit margin. New order input increased in
excess of 10 percent, and the backlog is up 25 percent
over the same time last year.
The Government Electronics Group's sales increased
more than 15 percent over the second quarter last year
,
while new orders were slightly down from last year's ex-
ceptionally good quarter.
Backlog is up more than 20
percent over the same period last year.
Robert W. Galvin, chairman and chief executive of-
ficer, said "Our expectation that the recession would last
through the first half of 1982 has been affirmed. As

turnaround appears to be delayed to later in the second

MOTOROLA EXPANDING IN SOUTH FLORIDA
PLANTATION, FL -- Motorola's Communications Sector, which broke ground
last year for a new Paging Division manufacturing, engineering and administrative
! - -
facility in Boynton Beach, Florida, is proceeding as planned, with structural
steel work now taking shape.
Dramatic business growth in the firm's Plantation, Florida facility, which
houses both the Portable Products Division and Paging Division, created the
need for this new facility which will accommodate the complete Paging manufac-
turing, engineering and administration functions._
This new Boynton Beach facility, which was designed by Heery and Heery
Architects and Engineers, is being constructed on a 90 acre site at the
southeast corner of Congress and Northwest 22nd Avenue in Boynton Beach.
The Portable Products Division will remain in Plantation.
The first phase of construction, consisting of 320,000 square feet, is
targeted for completion in mid-1983 with an anticipated employment of 1600
people. It is anticipated that 70% of these positions will be filled from the
local area.
Motorola expects its work force to continue to grow over the next 10
years in Boynton Beach to over 5000 people, which will also necessitate
expansion of the facility to 600,000 square feet.
