CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH PLANNING AND ZONING DIVISION (561) 742-6260 PUBLISH: THE POST February 7, 2000 EXHIBIT "C" December 13, 1999 City of Boynton Beach Planning and Development Board Boynton Beach, Florida RE.:Variance on 137 East Woolbright-For Wall Mounted Signs Dear Sirs and Madams, In regards to a request for a sign variance on 137 East Woolbright, Boynton Beach, Florida, the reasons justifying a request to place an entrance sign on the wall of the said property are: A. The building is a L shape, situated with one edge directly against the building east of the property which is the Medication Station. The other edge is situated on the north side, making a cove for parking in-between as seen in the survey. The west bound customers can not see the upcoming building and often have to slam on their brakes and/or turn around on Woolbright Road. This causes serious hazards to an already busy and dangerous area. Shortly after removing the entrance sign, a driver ran into our wall. She did not know where the drive was to pull in to and lost control of her vehicle. Therefore, a sign showing where the entrance to the plaza is and which shops the plaza has would be helpful in deterring further traffic problems. Also, due to the situation of the building, it is hard to determine the address on the property. A sign showing the stores that are in the plaza bluntly placed in front of them will deter the slamming on of brakes and the stopping and going on Woolbright to a minimum. Big signs, eye level, will allow drivers to see the place that they are going ahead of time and allow the to slow and indicate their turn in a decent manner. Why not just change the overhead sign? Well, first of all is the cost, initial and every time a tenant changes. The building is in an area that is upcoming, but right now, we do not have the money to constantly change the sign. Additionally, the tenants, mostly just starting out would not _ have the money to change the signs themselves. Then there are empty spaces and the plaza looks deserted. This is a look that Boynton has been trying to avoid so that people can realize the city's potential. It would not help our business either. In addition, it would not cut down on the safety hazards as patrons would have to be looking up, off the road, to find the sign. Also, there would still be confusion as to where to turn into the drive. This causes the braking effect. B. There is nothing that we have done that makes this situation the way it is. We did not layout the building, just improved the existing. Maybe we have caused a little extra traffic, but we are now looking out for the safety of everyone by trying to rectify this problem. C. There are no special privileges being granted for unnecessary reasons, only the city commission's number one rule, safety. D. Everyone has signs advertising their shops and offices. This sign would greatly clear up what our tenants do and increase business for everyone with out having to spend thousands of dollars for advertising. E. We are not asking for giant, lit up signs, but relatively small, well made and permanently installed signs indicating the building entrance and tenants. F. All this variance will do is make a well invested property succeed and Woolbright road safer.
