Hydrllla and pondweeds are a continual threat to the water column in each of the eight lakes due to their sballow depth and cover by native wetland vegetation. To further enhance ponds "Qn aud "P". which were being overgrown with submerged pondweeds. a bubbler-aeration system waS installed in each of these ponds. Water quality has improved in both of the aerated ponds due to cxtcDsive chemical mid physical trcc:ttmcnts of exotics coupled with water column tumov='. Other ponds within the development arc scheduled for aeration system installation in 2003. In addition to submerged aquatics. emeI'icnt nuisance vegetation such as cattails. primrose willow, and torpedO grass are beins chemically treated with appropriate h~_ 2. A modification to the development order diVided the 40 acres into two parcels: a 25 7 acre north sand pine preserve and a 14.3 acre south S8Dd pine preserve.. Co..A;t;on No.6 of the development order indicated that a minimum of 40 ac:::r-.s of lWld pine scrub 'be preaerved aDd managed to protect for aopher tortoise, burrowing owls, gopher frogs, Florida mouse, and Florida scrub lizards. A fire managem~ plan for each preserve has been approved by the City of Boynton Bcac;h and all appropriate agencies. In Septembe1" 2001, a field meeting was coordinated witb the City of Boynton Beach, TCRPC, FGWC and other interested parties. Out ofthcsc meeting, the following activities have been completed: 14 acre Preserve A. A:fire lane was cut along the perimeter of the preserve and this has been periodically mowed. The fire lane was requjred to :facilitate a 2002 prescribed bum. B. With the cooperation of the City of Boynton Beach fin, department:, tract 2, whioh was to be burned in 2028, was burned successfully on the 16 April 2002. Scvaal attempt:! were required to reach a complete burn due to scvcral days of rainfall, which prolonged buming until 21 April 2002. Field data of the bum was collected in the :first week of May to determine the amount ot cover lost in the tire. This wOt'k is bcin; conduc:ted as research and wi)) be used. to make decisions on future burns of other tracts. C. All of the large Brazilian pepper. and other exotic species have been hydro axed and treated with Garlon 3A or GarIon 4 herbicide. This treatment is occurring on a quarterly basis. D All fencing issues have been rcctUic:ld and garbage is removed as ncc:dcd. E. Based on the close proximity of Quantum Villa Apartments. the City of Boynton B_e3ch has recommended that no burning will be conducted. in the future. All new work will be conducted using mechanical alteration techniques (i.e., roller chopping and s::md pine harvesting). F To help facilitate ground cover fOI1lge for the existing gopher tortoise population, the northwest comer of the preserve wa.s mowed in July 2002 to stimulate forage grassea and vines. O. It was estimated that the habitat is cummtly over the suggested carrying capacity of J 1 tortoise per sere and is nearly three times that limit. This may be partially due to the release oftortoisc by nearby residents and the horse rancher to the :north. o. 'Ibis type of dumping causes soil disturbance and often impacts the ~ tonoise population. Many of the fence posts have collapsed due to the elimination of a buffer bctwccn the construction area and the preserve. Additionally a portion ot'the chain link fence a1o~ the southwestern edge of the preserve was destroyed and local workers have been ot'! road in the preserve. This worle was not completed in 2002 as indicated and is still not completed as of l:bis report. 5 Coaversanons with the City of Boynton Beach indicated that the park site west of the 2S-acrc preserve was scheduled for debris clean up in 2002. Due to the seositMty of the plants to soils dUturbance. some of the more mechanical techniques are used as a last resort in :an effort to reduce soil diJturbance, which often leads to invaszion by exotic grasses. Therefore, band spraying and GUtting is often utilized over time in order to achieve the desired goals.
