R97-077RESOLUTION R97- 7'/ A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, OPPOSING THE PLANS OF THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO EXPEND $70 MILLION PER YEAR FOR THE NEXT FORTY (40) YEARS WITH A FOUR (4%) PERCENT INCREASE EACH YEAR TO ASSIST IN FUNDING THE HIGH SPEED RAIL PROJECT; SUPPORTING THE EXPENDITURE OF MONIES BY THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO OFFSET FUNDING PROBLEMS OF THE TRI-RAIL SYSTEM. WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation has announced plans to spend $70,000,000 of the taxpayer's money per year for the next forty years, with a 4% increase each year to assist in funding the high speed rail project; and WHEREAS, it has been brought to the attention of the City Commission that the Tri-Rail System is experiencing funding problems; and WHEREAS, the Tri-Rail System serves residents from Miami to Northern Palm Beach County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Commission of the City of Boynton Beach, Florida formally opposes the annual use of Seventy Million ($70,000,000) Dollars of taxpayer money for the next forty (40) years, with a four (4%) percent increase each year, to assist in funding the High Speed Rail Project. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Commission strongly urges the Florida Department of Transportation to use a portion of funds to assist the Tri-Rail System with funding problems and increase the efficiency of the system. A copy of this Resolution shall be provided to the Florida League of Cities, the Florida Department of Transportation, Tri-Rail System, Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners, Broward County Board of Commissioners, Martin County Board of Commissioners, and Dade County Board of Commissioners.
