RENOVATION OF AN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY
HUD GRANT - SPECIAL PROJECT - NARRATIVE
B-08-SP-FL-0052
SCHOOLHOUSE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM & LEARNING CENTER
The 1913 Schoolhouse Children's Muscum and Learning Center is a historical building
owned and maintained by the City of Boynton Beach.
The Schoolhouse Children's Museum & Learning Center has a specific mission to
encourage children in cooperation with their parents to learn about themselves, the
history, natural history and arts of Palm Beach County and the State of Florida. The
mission of the museum is to serve by educating all thc children who walk through its
doors, The museum's service through education focuses on hands-on interactive
exhibits, programs, outreach activities and special events which speak to the richness and
diversity of our Florida heritage.
The original building was completely renovated by 200 I and placed on the National
Register of Historical Locations. Since its renovation many, if not all, window frames
that were completely replaced arc leaking causing unknown damage to thc interior walls
of the building.
It is imperative to assess damage and completely repair and/or replace damaged window
frames in all windows and doors, All windows will be replaced with Hurricane wind
impact glass. By doing this, it will ensure the protection of the building and continuation
of providing educational services to children and families in the Boynton Beach
community and the surrounding region after a storm event.
The cntire grant amount of $294,000 will be expended on damage assessment and the
purchase and replacement of window frames and impact glass.
