Minutes 05-21-10 MINUTES OF THE COMMISSION RETREAT HELD AT THE INTRACOASTAL CLUBHOUSE, 2240 N. FEDERAL HIGHWAY, BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, AT 6:30 P.M., ON FRIDAY, MAY 21, 2010 Present: Jose Rodriguez, Mayor Marlene Ross, Vice Mayor William Grlove, Commissioner Woodrow L. Hay, Commissioner Steven Holzman, Commissioner Kurt Bressner, City Manager James Cherof, City Attorney Social/Introductory matters regarding Workshop/Retreat Program The Commission gathered at 6:30 pm to enjoy a social hour and dinner. Mayor Rodriguez called the meeting to order at 8:12 pm. Jeannine Rizzo, Consultant with ThelnsideEdge and facilitator for the Retreat, introduced herself and reviewed her professional and educational background. She explained she had met or talked with each of the members of the Commission and had them fill out an assessment to compose the program she would be presenting. The goal of the Retreat was to build a team and harness the talents of each of the Commission members to best serve the community. Ms. Rizzo noted, based on the assessments, the Commission members had more similarities than differences. Prioritizing and working together would give the Commission the leverage to implement their vision for the City of Boynton Beach. The morning program would include discussions on communicating, modifying conduct and focusing on issues. To succeed the Commission had to be unified and work together with all of their talents. Ms. Rizzo stressed it was imperative to build on what the City and Commission had, rather than reinventing the wheel. The goal should be to focus on today and move forward. Another area to be covered would be body language, reactions and how to work together. It was necessary to understand that only actions, thoughts and emotions can be controlled. Understanding each other's personal behavioral traits would make interaction easier and the Commission as a whole more productive. 1 Meeting Minutes Commission Retreat Boynton Beach, FL May21,2010 The afternoon program would involve framing the top two initiatives, identified in the assessments, and ultimately having a map of the progression of the project and the steps that would need to be taken. Mayor Rodriguez indicated the Commission had to be open to all possibilities and Vice Mayor Ross interjected at times they would need to agree to disagree and make the best decision for the City of Boynton Beach. Ms. Rizzo advised in many instances people hold on to the past and the politics that hinder their ability to achieve their goals and focus on the future. There had to be a group effort for the team. It was important to realize all members were equal with one vote. Commissioner Orlove wanted to know all the priorities that had been identified, rather than singling out two initiatives. Ms. Rizzo advised working on the top two initiatives would establish the process to accomplish any goal. The ability to work together was the essential element of success. Ms. Rizzo thanked everyone for talking with her and filling out the assessments. She looked forward to working together during the next day's program. The meeting adjourned at 9:20 pm.
