B. Presentations: 1, Proclamations: a. "Literacy Awareness Month"- September 2001 Mayor Broening read the "Literacy Awareness Month" proclamation. Presentation by Alison Adler, Ed.D., Director of Palm Beach County Safe Schools Dr. Alison Adler stated that the Safe School Center has moved from the Palm Beach County offices to Boynton Beach. She thanked Commissioner Fisher and Virginia Farace, Library Director, for serving on the Safe Schools Task Force. The Safe Schools Center has been in existence for seven years. Dr. Adler explained the "Safe School Ambassadors" initiative, which is to train a cross-section of students to notice a potential dangerous situation on campus and speak to trained adults. She also said that in addition to program curriculum, the Safe Schools Center also offers alternatives to suspensions and other opportunities for students who need assistance. 3. Presentation to Little League team by Vice Mayor Ron Weiland This presentation was postponed until a future City Commission meeting. V~. Pete Mazzella, Assistant to the Utilities Director, stated that the City does test the water throughout its service area. The City's spectrophotometer is 10 or 11 years old and will be replaced in the next fiscal year. However, some outside testing is still required because there are some tests that cannot be performed with any of the City's own machines. Motion Commissioner Ferguson moved to approve item VI.B.3. motion that carried unanimously. Commissioner Fisher seconded the VII. CITY MANAGER'S REPORT: VIII, ANNOUNCEMENT OF SPECIAL CITY COMMISSION MEETING & PUBLIC HEARING TO FOLLOW AT 6:30 P.M. REGARDING FIRE ASSESSMENT Mayor Broening announced that the Public Hearing on the Fire Assessment will begin at 6:30 p.m. After some discussion, it was the consensus that people wishing to speak at the Hearing must fill out a green card. Vice Mayor Weiland read an excerpt from the February 9, 2000 Agenda Preview Conference that stated "The time allotted for presentations under Item VII Public Hearings should be flexible."
